>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as A Hat in Time, Animal Well, Baba Is You, Balatro, Battle Brothers, Cave Story, Celeste, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, Dead Cells, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hades, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hotline Miami, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Monster Train, Noita, Nuclear Throne, OFF, OneShot, Rain World, Shovel Knight, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, The Witness, Void Stranger, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>27 months between the release of Hades 1.0 and announcement of Hades 2
I'm excited for the full release, but I hope Supergiant's next game is announced before December 2027, and that it isn't a sequel
>>
Ah, Earth Dancer! Your dance has brought me joy and happiness. In gratitude, allow me to bestow upon you this recipe.
>>
>>540405605
They're still relatively small, and Hades 2 was their first sequel. I doubt they'll do a sequel for any of their other games, while they were successful none were Hades level successful. Plus none of the stories really make sense for a sequel, they like destroying the entire world.
>>
>>540405120
Do we know yet which Onirism developer kusokami actually is?
Also have they backported the bugfixes and other improvements from the plugin into the main game yet?
>>
I hope the new Wolverine game is good. Xmen Origins was great, even if it was tied to a dogshit movie.
Obligatory RIP Raven Software. May they one day escape the CoD mines.
>>
>>540406853
Blood and gore aside, I'm not sure how you would make slicing dudes as Wolverine play much differently than punching dudes as Batman. It's not like Spider-man where his powers have a ton of potentially interesting uses.
Might also have a similar dissonance to Fallen Order, where regular human enemies can shrug off your clearly lethal attacks because video game.

Have had to make a late herb garden for Spirit Leaf, wish I'd started work on it last year but I'd not realised how much of this crap I'm going to need for Life Pills and things. 19x19 because I've shelled out for a Spirit Seed for the Spirit Soil and that's apparently how big their affected area is, but it takes 3 years. Whatever, some day I'll have a good supply of Spirit Leaves.

Yeah, but it's not like the seed goes 2 years and 99% of the remainder doing nothing, it just takes 3 years to finish doing the last tile at a little over 1 tile per day.
Plus even if I do get this achievement, honestly I fully intend to commit to this save now. There's stuff I want to try with this Heavenly Chaos modifier. If I don't get the achievement I still have my backup from minute 1 and during all of this time I can properly learn the ins and outs of what to expect going forward so I can better do the achievement next time.

What's been released is bad, but most of them are still in development. Rue Valley, XXX Nightshift, Hopetown, Zero Valley and whatever the fuck Rostov and Kurvitz are working on are all upcoming. Locust City was cancelled. Summer Eternal is presumably a game studio but all they've released so far is a political manifesto (classic ZA/UM).

My God, this game gets tedious.
>>
I finished breach mode for deus ex mankind divided yesterday. It was pretty bad and obviously made just to have some kind of lootbox system in the game. So instead of doing p2w shit, I just glitched my energy to have 50k energy and spammed titan+infinite waves at the (insanely tanky) enemies that take over 2 full mag of fully upgraded s-tier weapon in the face to die. Fuck giving them any money for that crap. I played most of it legit but I'm not gonna grind dailies for months to (maybe) get the almost mandatory upgrades and weapons to kill an enemy with over 100k health.
Story is absolute garbage, the writing is bad, it's not deus ex at all. Why the fuck does the news call AN ARMED GUERILLA ATTACKING A HUMANITARIAN CONVOY "Activists"!? No news organization would call them activists, that's just terrorism. The whole thing with the kid with blood cancer that dies right after you save her because the megacorp is just that evil and I'm supposed to feel something, like wtf? Also human life has apparently no value whatsoever because even when people get shot and almost die, it's still framed in a very light way. Not as an exceptional show of violence or something traumatic.
God the story is so bad. The gameplay is garbage too (feels like a f2p mobile game) and DEMD is not exactly a good game for speedrun or precise and quick movement. It's not dishonored, it's not a game where you can just run, jump of a rooftop and blink your way to safety. It's a game where you slowly crawl around enemies and pick the right time to crawl through enemies to not get spotted.
What the fuck were they thinking!? Let me tell you, execs wanted MONEY and LOOTBOXES and LIVESERVICE.
It's also the reason why ng+ only works on a single loop (no ng++) and why the highest difficulty deletes your save on death, I've seen plenty of people openly admitting that they've spent money on praxis kits to beat the highest difficulty.

All of this shit almost makes me side with the communistes. Fuck corpos!

Don't try to understand the logic. In one of the scenarios you literally destroy a revolutionary renewable energy that would solve the energy crisis entirely because you think some people might decide to use dead bodies as fuel in desert area without vegetation and somehow that's framed as the right way to think about it. Despite the fact that we already do that for a ton of thing
The first scenario literally has a paramilitary force storming a VersaLife building and shoot guards to kidnap a child. Somehow the news story is neutral with a few snarky remarks in favor of the corporation. In absolutely no world would "We killed people in a medical clinic to abduct a child, don't worry she's fine, we smuggled her out of the country and she is back with her real family. Don't ask about her, we won't show you any proof but you have to trust me she's fine, she's totally fine" be seen positively. Even more so when in the context of the game, Picus communication is owned by Morgan Everett and VersaLife is owned by Bob Page. Both illuminati, Bob at this point in the story is Morgan's apprentice and close friend.

Gameplay is solid, cool strong builds, good systems that allow you to keep upgrading your gear even if your runs don't get you the dream drops. All it needed was some tweaks so the fucking damage numbers don't lag the game, and maybe scale greater rifts even higher than 150 or whatever it is we have now.

I made a free browser game called Pixurbia which is basically an open world crime sandbox with trucking, fishing, hunting, taxi missions, robbing, killing, stealing+selling cars/weapons, burglaries, heists, etc

Hard Agree with most D3 seasons being better. D4 is putting in some effort with giving each season voice acting and cutscenes and honestly: I kinda don't give a fuck? I know the people doing story and voice acting are not the same people who come up with season themes and not the same people who code them, but if it's like a resource allocation thing, I'd rather they ditch the "we're putting story in it now" elements, and go all out on the theme gameplay.

I like how in rune factory you can pick your wife/husband's nickname. It's generally some vanilla shit but you always have a few themed nicknames like "milady" for a royalty type character. But some are ridiculous. Like can you imagine?

>Can't tell if this game is actually kinda difficult or i am just not used to souls-like combat anymore
The parry window is all kinds of fucked up, as if they tried to make it as much "not Sekiro" as possible
1) it takes a couple of frames for P to lift his weapon after you press block (instant in sekiro)
2) parry window itself is shorter (8 frames vs 12)
3) you have to hold parry button instead of tapping it (easy to fuck up when parrying multiple hits in fast succession)
Boss animations are from the elden ring school of thought will all kinds of long weird wind-ups or quick almost instant strikes after a long combo (designed specifically to remove your guard regain)
I got tired of that bs after Markiona (took me 4 hours to kill ffs) and just relied on Absolute Defense fable art and later perfection grindstone
>inb4 kitkat
I am not ashamed of being a shitter and not above using some slight cheese or cheap tactics, especially if they are put in the game by devs. I am old, have shit reaction time and never been above straight middle of mmr distribution in any online competitive game. Fucking soulslike arms race of making more and more ridiculous bs 40 hits attack bosses is getting real tiresome. It's like melee equivalent of bullet hell. It's not what made DS/DkS special and popular. At least FromSoft games give you plenty of tools for somewhat easy mode playstyle (magic/shields), most other soulslikes don't.

at this point i just grow really tired of "oh you emptied my healthbar? Fuck you. second form with a completely unreleated moveset." cause it just forces you to git really gud at the first phase so you have enough resources to take into the second. and then you get wombo combo'd in 5 seconds anyway.
At least assume i am getting close to the end with Krat central station going to shit.
it's not a bad game. but so far maybe a 7/10. exploration is also a bit too linear i feel.
>I am not ashamed of being a shitter and not above using some slight cheese or cheap tactics, especially if they are put in the game by devs
yeah, nah. i don't judge. use whatever tools the game gives you. i don't get the mindset of "hurr durr you didn't beat it if you used X." The devs put it in for a reason.
unless it's some absurd unforeseen combo or they fucked up a decimal point or something and it just trivializes everything.
I started chucking bombs against the green monster because i really couldn't bother with its retarded moveset.

You'll get dlc access after you finish this act, which has a decent amount of content, some really cool weapons and bosses that are way harder than anything in the base game
People recommend going in asap (you get some extra lore tidbits at the start of act X if you finish dlc before that) but you also get perfection grindstone (autoparry for 15 seconds) early in act X and an Advance-scaling handle with Absolute Defense fable art further in, both of which would've made my time in dlc waaaay more easier, so keep that in mind.
Also finishing dlc made the rest of the game a cakewalk for me because of said weapons and overleveling. New Legion arms are really powerful as well.

As another aging anon who recently played through it, it's still relatively cheesable. Throwables are overpowered, the crossover glaive new players start with is overpowered, and the perfect grinder trivializes both the true final boss and DLC's final boss. It's harder than most games but still easier than Bloodborne, Sekiro, and many non-From contemporaries.

There's 3 of those towers? Fuck man I think I've seen one of them a long time ago and I don't remember where.

I returned to the game after a hiatus and have been backtracking through old areas, collecting powerups I missed earlier.
Maybe I'm retarded but Onirism maps are kinda badly designed.
In the sense that once you've done the main quest in them, every area feels the same, there's no way to remember which places you've already checked. Applies to the swamp, inferno, treetops, pinewood early parts and even the sea in borealis sea. When you first play through an area, the encounters give them structure and pace them nicely. Afterwards they're just an empty maze, the even main path through an area is no longer obvious.
Doesn't help that the vanilla tab map is crap, the minimap is a blessing.
And many areas are too big, you spend a lot of time just holding W(+shift) without an autorun macro.

I liked some of the more linear sections, they looked and felt slightly better. While I like the money system and the fact is rewards you for exploring the map, it doesn't fit well with the narrative since accomplice is supposed to be paying for all of your gear. Shopkeeper doesn't watch gay porn anymore. Unique weapons are harder to distinguish from unbought weapons since both use the same message (which only appears once), this isn't a huge problem in intravenous 2's campaign since there is next to no unique weapons (most appear in at least 2 missions or can be bought) but in the first campaign, almost every level has a unique weapon. Some of the new routes are way too good and some of the old routes were nerfed pretty hard so some levels became much easier and others much harder. I also liked that some rooms didn't have windows, it made them feel safer and gave you a bit of time to think and observe.

Source on the parry info? I found it intuitive, much more so than Fromsoft parrying. Felt like i could press the button exactly as the attack landed instead of needing to preempt it, and it was forgiving since being too early still results in a block.
>frame delay
Are you sure? There is an animation to raise the weapon, but it seemed like that is skipped if damage lands before the weapon is raised. I know it does have a delay after raising guard without being hit, to prevent 'cheating' by spam tapping the button.
>hold parry button
I think the devs were trying to make that a point when they called it a "Perfect Guard" instead of parry. Yeah you can't let go of the guard button until after the attack lands. That could have been communicated better, but it also seems logical. As in, if people hadn't already been trained to do otherwise by Fromsoft, that would be natural.

Damn, nice work. I suffered more on the croc than anything else in the game, maybe my fault for doing the DLC under leveled in NG+. Be careful not to overlevel yourself in the zoo, it doesn't get much harder in either the main game or DLC. Though From what I've seen the diminishing returns are pretty well implemented so you can't push damage up too high either. For story reasons it probably makes more sense to finish the main game before the last sub-area of the DLC, make sure to listen to your records so your nose is long enough for the true ending.

>consumable items
Don't get why these cause such annoyance. Surely giving players optional items to use at one specific part which causes them trouble is better than difficulty options which alter the whole game. It means developers can balance the game properly, yet some people demand every game have 'accessibility options'.
Anyway, for Lies of P specifically I found the trick is not to get carried away with parrying. It's easiest to use an equal mix of parries, dodges, and standard blocks. If you are only going to do one then dodge-only is easier than parry-only (block-only depends on your weapon but is still easier than only parrying).

Personally I liked the diversification and how you could make more flexible builds (not that I didnt mostly just use shurikens to cut the distance to these freaking arc throwing mechs and the lategame flying dudes), especially how the dodges were based on stamina rather than a set value. But I cant deny the bosses were somewhat lackluster, the only memorable one was the one just before the final boss, as the final itself was such a pushover it wasnt even funny.

Only thing im kinda peeved about is how we didnt get to use the wingsuit from the last couples levels more, it felt great to use.

Anyone plays idle/incremental games here?
I recently played Magic Research 2 and Arcanum: Theory of Magic and really enjoyed them. They felt more like an RPG with automated grinding than a traditional idle game, with great mechanics and fun spellcasting and dungeon running.

Any recommendations for similar games with semi-active gameplay that I can play on the other screen while marathoning hundreds of episodes of a show?
Or any other comfy game, really, that doesn't require constant attention.

It was a neat little puzzle game, but I do wish they make the instability mechanic more than just a progress bar and for it to be integrated as part of certain puzzles, ie gotta juggle with the stability to allow certain interactions otherwise impossible, or certsin interactions changes depending on the level of stability, ie the lower it get the more nonsensical they become. But it do have potential, and I am a sucker for anything scp related, wether it be just in vibes or otherwise. But I hope they dispose of the they/them pronoun retardation in the interview paper, it has absolutely no narrative value and serve only to cater to politically minded nincompoops who'd be satisfied of such a pointless nod to their personal beliefs. MC is basically just a janitor/maintenance guy, no need to use him as a mean to pass a comments on utterly irrelevant political issues.

i thought stuck in time was pretty cool.
you are stuck in a time loop and you only have so many actions before it resets.
You program the loop you do and revisit and optimize it as you learn more about what to do and where to go. and numbers go up in the form of permanent skills and familiarity with each tile.

They are very similar games in pretty much every way, so just pick one, and if you liked it play the other one too. Both of them have about two weeks' worth of content, so it's not a very big time investment.

The main difference between them is that Magic Research 2 has some very satisfying unlocking mechanics where there are about a hundred side quests that each unlock something nice for your next run, and you prestige every few hours in it. While in Theory of Magic prestige is a very light mechanic, you can play through the whole game and the content it has on your first character in a couple of days, and you only restart because you want to play through the game on a different character build next time.

I think maybe I liked Magic Research 2 a bit more. It's a paid game but you can get it from cs.rin.ru, while Theory of Magic is free. Make sure you play the experimental version, it has a bunch of quality of life mechanics over the stable version: https://arcanumtesting.gitlab.io/arcanum/

This kind reminds me. I wanted to make my own idle game one day, but who I am kidding, I have no creativity or skills.

NGU Idle and Your Chronicle are ones I've played the most, but they are LONG runners and get very sit-there-and-do-nothing-for-a-week grindy. I've also dabbled a bit in Incremental Epic Hero 2, but it's somehow even longer and grindier, with an overreliance on a cash shop tacked on, but there is a whole lotta numbers to go up.
And of course, there's the evergreen Anti-Idle The Game, which is still (very slowly) getting worked on 15 years after release. The Reforged mod is a major upgrade to both QoL and content.

O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits.

First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

Just finished playing this. highly recommend it if you like dungeon crawlers and turn based jrpgs. It's not a huge time investment either with between 8-15 hours if you going to 100% it. Fights don't drag on more than a few turns. and you can speed it up for grinding.

Any FPS RPGs that are more grounded instead of being RPG-ish? Unlike Borderlands and Fallout where you get skill builds that stack up your dps, I want a more grounded survivalist fps rpg where most skills are just for utility and you mostly depend on the damage of your guns/weapons. Deus Ex, System Shock, Nu-Prey Dishonored

It does sound like Stalker is what you're looking for though despite it not having RPG mechanics at all, especially if want the survivalist feel.
Equipment selection is great, tools eh. I'd suggest playing it on the highest difficulty due to a weird way it affects weapon accuracy.

Just added a huge update to my own indie project. It's a free 2D browser crime sandbox called Pixurbia, and I just added an online "shared world" where players can spend in-game money starting a gang and then pretty much every major action from that point forwards influences the game online for every player. The more people are actively playing and working towards their gang, the more influence that gang has in the city and if one side is really kicking ass they get increased pay from their criminal enterprise and more protection while the other gang's players get attacked by more drive-by shootings and earn less cash. You can also ignore starting a gang and instead become a crime-fighting hero killing gang members across the city to lower the winning gang's influence and make the city more peaceful with increased police presence. I'm posting about this everywhere right now trying to bring players into the fight and make it interesting. There's a meter in-game that shows if the gang war has swayed in either direction.

It might have the best gameplay of any duo fight in the genre, feels like they made it just to show off. I checked out what's going on with 7 days to die because i remember it being fun but it seems the devs were busy making the game worse and ruining every playstyle they didn't personally approve of, most notable of wich they removed jar, the xp gain while doing specific actions and also you need to find smoothies to access certain biomes? and something about zombie pathfinding.

>hasn't 7dtd been carried by mods for years?
Yes.
>Have the devs done something to break that?
They continue updating the game for some fucking reason, adding worse and worse mechanics and removing previous ones that were tolerable. Every update forces modders to fix their mod or even restructure the entire thing. Inevitably some of them give up and keep the mod on an older version of the game, which lowers their discoverability and could run into bugs which won't be fixed, or they get tired of making fixes and quit. The game would unironically be in a better state if all of the devs died

Hell I spend more time just lurking and doom scrolling (not for much longer because holy fuck has youtube become utterly unworkable nowadays, shorts taking all the frontpage and I get fuckton of bugs like videos scrolling past super quickly like it was stuck in scrolling or I get comments for another videos altogether, fucking monkeys with typewriter coding I swear to god) than enjoying anything videa related.

This is kinda point - Melinoe literally states that she doesn't know what to do aside from her mission and Chronos mogs her that she has no life and fights for family she doesn't even know. She's learning to live in the moment, without waiting for the future or mourning the past.

>Finish mankind divided (it really sucks)
>Didn't get the no alarm achievement

>Long list of random things that void the achievement for no reason
Ah, that kinda sucks. At least I got pacifism and now I have a ng+ ready save with all the augments, 120k credits and so many consumables that I can spend the entire time spamming invisibility. It shouldn't take too long, considering how half the missions are "go talk to X at the other side of the town" or "get past 2 rooms of guards".
The story was confusing, the game was very, very buggy. I had to spend 1/3 of my time looking at how to fix issues on different forums. It doesn't answer anything, it adds a lot of questions and it ends on a cliffhanger. It almost feels like added content rather than a proper game (despite being actually fairly long, it took me over 40 hours to complete).

What a shame. It was a shit game, what a rotten way to die.
Also deus ex remastered was announced a few days after I decided to play MD and it looks like shit. Thanks embracer.

Pacifism in mankind divided is a lot less... Strict than human revolution. If you make an enemy fall from high and he dies, it's fine. If you knockdown or trick an enemy into walking on an electrified floor or poisonous gas area, it's perfectly ok. You can even icarus punch someone off a roof and it will be fine. Anything except the kill switch. Pretty sure you can hack the turrets against the final boss. The final boss is an exo-suit enemy so you can't just knock him. You have to stun him with something and then knock him. Additionally I read on the wiki that anything except using an emp/tesla to do a takedown from behind him (it must be from behind) will trigger a silent alarm and void the no alarm achievement.
So basically, eat a biocell, put on titan and tazer+takedown if you don't care about the no alarm achievement just use the kill switch if that's what you're aiming for and reload after getting the achievement to do it pacifist, doing both is a pain in the ass and the game is buggy.

It unironically might be the last 'big release' for a long time. Had the advantage that people have been waiting since before the indie-scene was so over-saturated. And cyberpunk soured the idea of 'hype' for the AAA market. Best chances are Elder Scrolls 6 or Wticher 4, and by now people have learned to be skeptical of their developers. Games are in a weird spot where the market isn't small enough for individual releases to stand out anymore (it used to be notable whenever a new game appeared on steam). But they aren't ubiquitous enough to become 'cultural events' in the way that movies can (or could, that is changing as well).

I'm still not sure how they convinced a generation that anything older than 10 years is bad by default.

Almost assuredly going to be a cashgrab flop, because lets be honest after witcher 3 the story is pretty much done and it wouldnt be the same if it isnt Geralt, and dragging him out of retirement (basically the end of blood n wine) would be spitting on the character devellopment. If they do it about some rando witcher it would barely make sense since they're effectively nigh extinct and can't make anymore iirc, and making a game solely about Ciri would be risky as she is basically OP, but I guess they could potentially make it about her interdimensional travels but even then it may come off as forced. But at the same time id love to see ciri btfo a cyberspycho and for the pleb to shit themselves thinking its some super fancy chrome she has and not realize its literally magic. Which is intend to have happened by her retelling of the events in witcher 3.

The voice actors are annoying and unconvincing. The characters are very current year.
The game has a vague, inexplicable turn order for units. There is no overwatch system to prevent units from running up to eachother and shooting.
Magic "EMP" weapons that completely disable vehicles and can keep them disabled permanently are retarded.
The detailed 3D models acting during their own turn segments while everyone else stands around doing nothing makes the combat look jarring and bad, a problem shared by many turn based tactics games.
The game doesn't seem to have anything going for it besides unit customization and aesthetic.

Current yearisms are nothing new, yes. It simply being a term applied to a set of tropes that became increasingly common in the past decades.

Was thinking of finally playing the Lisa games because I saw some crossover fanart and it reminded me I never got around to them. So I'm looking into which one to start with and that seems crazy that Lisa the Painful has been on Steam since 2014 but Lisa the First only just got added last year? I guess it's been free for years anyway but it seems weird they would wait that long.
From looking online I get the impression First is kind of rough and some people say you don't need to play it at all (while other people say if you don't play it then some things in Painful won't make sense, so that's confusing), so maybe that explains it. But apparently it's only a couple hours long so I don't see why I wouldn't play it, worst case scenario if I don't like it, it's over fast and I won't let that stop me from playing the others. Although it also says it's like Yume Nikki and I like that game so I don't see why I wouldn't like it. I'm probably overthinking it. I'll just get started and follow up at some point after I've finished the games.

No alarm and hardcore mode finished. It was extremely easy and I ended up with 12 biocells I didn't use despite literally spamming them to run past enemies. Number of crashes: 11, total playtime: Who fucking knows.
It's not as easy as looking at the time of my post because I took a bit over an hour to cook and eat something.
I'd say, about 3 hours total playtime, 1/3 of it was crashes, loading and unskippable dialogues.
>>
>>540978720
New areas in 1.0 are gonna be buggy regardless of how much they delay it. Especially now that they're crunching so bad that they're noticing its effect on the game quality.
New content has always been buggy. It takes a while fix gamebreaking stuff, and ages to fix weird outlier bugs.
But it won't matter for most new players, because the game is long enoough for the devs to patch any gamebreaking player-discovered bugs before casuals reach the new lategame content from a fresh start.

Speaking of, my save in Marshmalott is probably bricked. Not sure if 1.0 patch is going to fix it or if I have to get into save editing.

The soldiers in menace look like they're equipped similarly to modern soldiers.
Most modern troops are forced to carry loads of equipment that require you to be in very good physical condition, and even those people still regularly end up crippled from their service.
The soviets specifically did their best to only employ women in roles that did not require great physical strength(snipers, aviators, non-combatants), close combat was to be avoided at all costs. Their spatial awareness tends to not be as good either, and that's usually very important for pretty much any combat role. And I'd say the second world war isn't a pre-gunpowder setting.
Pretty much every military has looked into using female combatants and found they're an emergency resource at best and an active detriment at worst. The pool of suitable females is minuscule under optimal conditions and usually requires standards to be lowered drastically for general or special forces recruitment.
>>
>>540999583
Child soldiers aren't exactly known for being effective combatants.
>>
>>540998242
>meat shields
you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about
right now, infantry is the single most important combat element as it's the only one capable of effectively capturing and holding tactical and strategic positions, and are least susceptable to drone attacks compared to dedicated ground attack vehicles.
being a frontline trooper means having to carry shitload of gear and ammunition, and multiple weapon types (you'd most likely have a dedicated anti-drone shotgunner in your squad, carrying both a longrifle, a smoothbore loaded with buckshot and a sidearm), having amazing spatial awareness and reaction time for spotting drones, and being able to actively hold trenches for weeks which in worst case could offer you a comfort level of the WWI western frontline under Verdum.
and i am not even talking about assault squads that have to be proficient in multiple combat styles in different enviroments, as well as actually being good at shooting.

With two STC slots and enough shadow orbs it can outperform any other strike craft. Can't make it faster than a Sabre but it certainly can tank and damage just as good as Dragon.

Ironically its main limitation is what used to be its strength: the places it can go.
Double irony because the new menace salvage mission implies every Menace-class is deep space capable, your dumb horny pirates just don't know how.

A hat in time is unironically one of the best platformers of the last decade, tight control, ton of replayability, splitscreen co-op and the deathwish dlc content is genuinely fun to beat despite being a pain in the ass at times. Oh and tons of player made levels, many which are genuinely good.

The muh serious mc character trope got milked to death in the 2000 and 2010, literally hundred of them, each barely more memorable than the last. You can still find some giving a similar vibes, but they are almost always doom clones that are just insanely pimped out.

You mean that sarcastically, right.

>>
>>541018843
Sorry, I should have phrased that better, its the 2 decades of muh serious MC in videa games that killed any creativity when it came to FPS mc's, which coincide with the highjacking of the genre by AAA corpos who saw that it as a relatively safe genre to make banks on. We're just seeing the return of MC's made by dev who grew in that generation, while the OG devs are mostly retired or nearing such, and the corpos drones whose themes are defined by commitees are getting stale as hell since they never learned to love the games they make and its just filling a checklist to get a pay check for all they care. Dont worry it will get better and we'll start seeing more and more of these types of characters come back to the scene, just let the new generation of devs do their work.

This soap water ammo pickup doesn't work properly, it respawns after collecting it. Or at least the glow does. Just restart and run back to it from the nearest checkpoint.

There's one for laser dryer battery right at the start of the game too and that still hasn't been fixed.

The Dark Mod has better Thief gameplay, though.

Doom 3 engine with its unique pixel-perfect shadow system is a perfect technological match for a thief game.
The movement system (mantling, rope & vine arrows) is also great, I miss TDM mantling every time when playing older Thief games.
The game engine also doesn't suffer from long-standing Thief 1/2 exploits and bugs, although some people seem to like them. It even seems to be a major factor still keeping some people attached to Dark Engine.

The only thing TDM could have done better is lockpicking.
Should have taken the lockpicking minigame from Thief 3. But I guess that would have been too offensive for Dark Engine purists.

And they'll manage to work around the sound.
The good thing about open source projects is that they can keep getting better while Dark Engine is an old, dead black box. (Aside from NewDark which had to be a leak from one of the OG devs with source access.)
Anyways, the sound propagation model never bothered me (in fact I could argue the original positional audio cues were overemphasized to "sell" the new feature and make it playable on deskop stereo speakers of the time, whereas TDM positional audio is a more mature take on the same feature) but there's been talks of looking into raytraced audio which might or might not be just the perfect thing for emulating the Dark Engine feel, or even making it a player-configurable option.

But recently the enginedev priorities have been in renderer optimization. They finally made the occlusion culling systems work really, really well. Every mission runs better regardless of how good its creator was at optimization. From a FM mapper POV it's starting to resemble a modern game engine rather than a Thief game with its implicit constraints.

>skyrim invented things done by games in the previous decade
lol memes aside it's not even the same system.
Skyrim lockpicking is essentially a game of guess one RNG number whereas Thief 3 lockpicking becomes a game of slowly becoming familiar with different lock makes and models with multiple tumblers.Admittedly that kind of thing works better with a lengthy campaign with consistent lock design rather than single FMs, but I don't get why anyone would oppose a little gameplay in something as important as lockpicking in a thief game? Wanna know what's boring? Hold a button until the lock opens itself. The only way to make that system even worse would be including a progress bar to remove any remaining hint of uncertainty about how quickly the lock can be picked.

Source for that? Afaik, NewDark was made by Le Corbeau on the Ariane4ever forum without any technical explanation on how he achieved it. It was likely done using modern reverse engineering techniques rather than a proper leak.

But is it any good? I've heard extremely mixed things about it. Some people called it "Peak Colantonio design" and others say that this game is an example for why it's important to have proper management to avoid unguided disasters.
>>
>>541122968
Occam's razor.

Major reverse engineering project like that doesn't come out of nowhere in the way NewDark did. Smaller reversing projects, extensive datamining, little patches, gathering community knowledge would have preceded it. Look at every other old game executable that's been datamined, patched and reverse engineered by its community.

Plus, NewDark's author appears to have a motive to not openly engage with the community. Most likely because he's doing something of questionable legality. And that something doesn't seem to be peddling malware. Not that a Thief fan patch would be a reasonable vector for distributing malware.

Corbeau said he was just the messenger, not that he made it. Whether that's true or not, the points above stand.

>A game needs to be exceptional in some way
Just make it harder, that's what separates the wheat from the chaff.

A shitty TB system will just crumble when you crank up the odds against the player.
A good TB system becomes an exciting battle of wits where you're planning multiple *enemy* turns ahead, because planning your own future turns ahead isn't enough to eke out a win.

Many TB games have the problem that they're dead simple and piss easy, require no thinking beyond your current turn and MAYBE a little bit towards your next turn, essentially just simplistic realtime action mush but unnecessarily slowed down.

>unlike real time where its more about fast thinking
Most turn based combat systems are just boring puzzles masquerading as flashy combat.
If a developer puts more effort into a unit model than just making it a basic counter but they also use an abstract turn based combat system they've wasted a fuckton of effort.
Many real time tactics games have an extremely low micro requirement that relies on preparation and planning, many also have a pause function.
>>541132046
You can't accurately predict your opponent's future moves beyond a vague first guess in most turn based games with fog of war.
Most AI opponents are not good enough at long term planning to give you what you've asked for.

>Can I make Space Muhreens mow down hordes of invading tyranids with bolters in the game?
Space Muhreens and bolter equivalents all exist.
But it's using FTL logic for the gameplay so you can end up finding a shop that offers to sell you a space marine + bolter + siege armor ... when you have exactly 0 fucking scrap to buy the set with.

Also, if you somehow did manage to collect four centurion-tier crew, fully equip them, and get the assault sled utility + modules for boarding actions... The only real ships that will cause problems for you will be the the final ones with all-centurion crews, the miniboss, and the final boss.
The entire rest of the game at that point will be just watching enemy ships die in 10 seconds or less, because the setup is so over powered.

An abstract turn based combat system like the ones used by XCOM where literally nothing makes sense if you take anything like actions, damage, time frames, etc literally. Where you need to fill in everything with your imagination while two dudes awkwardly stare at each other like they took a timeout in the middle of a firefight.
The unit models might as well be as abstract as the gameplay. All those fancy animations and models just do the opposite of what they're supposed to when the numbers and what the game shows you are completely different.

Melinoe's default manner is serious but polite, but she does get kind of catty with some characters. Scylla in particular seems to irritate her in a way no other foe does. She gets frustrated with Eris, but still treats her like a friend, albeit a really annoying friend who causes a lot of problems. She's also rather terse and confrontational with Polyphemus. Scylla, though, Scylla she actually hates and will make snide comments about to her face or behind her back. The on-going feud between them is actually one of the better parts of the game's character dynamics.
>>
>>540683267
It's a totally separate run with its own gauntlet of bosses. The structure of the regions is also different from what you've seen before. Beating Chronos is still the main objective, but the surface runs are tied into it as you will find out by progressing the story. The main thing is that the surface also has totally different crafting ingredients in its regions, which you need to unlock more stuff, so if you're trying to unlock something in particular you'll do underworld or surface depending on which materials you're focusing on.

And I would say the surface is harder than the underworld. At any rate I beat Chronos before I ever manged to beat Typhon

Maybe slightly worse than horticulture in the writing but the puzzles are a smidge harder and quite a bit more interesting.

game is designed to waste players time constantly with its mechanics be it no good fast travel unless modded in, crafting, inventory management, enchanting or the building of your own town in dlc area
want access to all skills? need two playthroughs where you build said town in the dlc because building are exclusive
death is irrelevant and even used for fast travel
world map is empty but that's not my problem, my biggest problem dawned on me when i thinking of what to go for in another playthrough
besides the first playthrough there is no reason to go to some locations, or even most of them unless you want a specific gear for a build you thought up
money? easy as fuck to make in one particular location which means you can be at your desired build skills wise in couple hours after that it's worthless (except dlc)
character progression? check above
gear? most of items are trash you wont use
don't wanna ramble on, i tried to like this game really hard but it's a flop for me

Without context that sounds really dumb, but she's talking about fire ESP users' ability to come back from death (the in-game mastery called Phoenix). They can regenerate their body even from almost complete disintegration, but when they come back the extreme mental trauma of having been killed causes their body to suppress the revival effect until they calm down. Some people with fire ESP can handle it better than others (the guy in the picture for example) but nobody in-universe can override their instinctual fear of death enough to revive consecutively.
It's just a lore reason for why it's got a 9-turn cooldown in-game.

>>541224478
Mmm.
RTS, fast-paced, with a relatively small army. You're not a conqueror or a king, but a petty warlord committing warcrimes and capturing villages by putting them to the torch and the sword.
You train squads of different types (spearmen, swordsmen, two-handed swordsmen and archers), and try to wipe enemy squads, if possible by surrounding them and crushing them.
Similar to Company of Heroes or Dawn od War 2, there's a retreat button, so it's easy to win a fight but difficult to actually wipe an enemy band.
Also there's firendly fire, so you want your archers to shoot in the enemies' back.

Game is surprisingly well-detailed, with lot of animations and different skins as units are upgraded, which is odd since it's very fast. If your archers are caught with their pants down, they're dead.
