What doomed this game was the mentality of hard counters, the spirit of overwatch was swapping characters and trying different team compositions, but characters like Orisa and Brigitte hard countering half the roster cemented a meta that’s unbeatable and everyone was forced to play it in order to climb ranks. Open queue was never an issue, they created the problem themselves.I know that people used and still do pick dps over support and tank, but ask yourself why certain support characters are always favored and picked with high play rates, even when it was open queue? Because they were fun. Even a dps main will have no problem picking D.Va or Roadhog or Zenyatta or Lucio, but yeah they won’t ever touch Reinhardt or Orisa or Brig. Blizzard should’ve just made more fun intuitive support and tank heroes but they were creatively bankrupt and blamed it on the game’s system.

counter swapping was never something that people did but the insistence that the player base must swap by the devs is what was and still is dragging the game down. natural counters like soldier 76 and mcree or any hitscan having an easier time hitting flying characters like mercy echo and pharah are fine. ana being the only character who could shut off any healing at all was horrible design. to then make kiriko the only character with any real answer to anti heal by introducing an ability that cleanses and makes whoever is hit completely invincible with zero play around was just choosing to die on the hill.

I admit it Stadium is more fun than comp and it boggles my mind to why it is. Is it because everyone is locked to one hero so they choose their main often and tryhard more? Ranking also doesn’t matter there and despite that less throwing than comp! I don’t think counter swapping is an issue unless like someone goes Zarya if you play Sigma or Orisa vs Rein. Maybe overwatch is better without comp
