investigating a random bug that appeared in todays development of Bokube.
"Speed bug" half of the levels in the game at random started to give boku super speed and the other half don't. Combing through the entire game to fix it level by level hopefully getting rid of this bug by the end of the night.

Added a free 15 coins and a diamond to the bokube tutorial level so the player is forced to pick them up and then can use them on the shops right away to buy cosmetics or health carrot cakes and learn how the shop systems work early.

Learned a lot from lurking here and the godot forums, Big Jays Rattastic Adventure is still in early access, but the last update I did was massive and fixed so much stuff. It also no longer has a capped fps. Literal pages of patch notes. Everyone has been responding well to the updates so far.

It should be obvious that a hyperniche art project made by a solodev schizo in his free time won't have nearly as much market appeal as a casual "slop" game made based on market research, popular trends, and plays on intuitive psychological desires.

It's the same as the way that women don't actually like wealthy men. Rather, they like the status and class that wealth is typically associated with. I think this is true. Even good passion projects go sorely underappreciated. It should seem strange how Valve games such as Half Life 2 or Portal were so widely appreciated back when they were released, while games of similar natures now are lucky to surpass 500 reviews. Something shifted, likely the mental state of the average Steam user, and it hasn't been explicitly noted.

this is the closest to a concise tutorial I could find that would help you model in blender to make a crappy model step by step, after this all you have to do is do an automatic UV of the model and paint it in substance painter, or learn how to uv properly (it's like skinning an animal and the lower the polygons the easier it is) and then paint on the image, the style and how good it looks depends on you after that, if the image looks too shitty you just need to put a gradient map on top

I think my game is coming along really nicely. This last update I just uploaded adds a lot of stuff to my 2D crime sandbox like a full blown online turf war across all players influencing everybody's game. You can join a gang and then work towards having your gang go attack players of the opposing gang and shit. Pretty much every action ties into influencing your gang somehow.

It's like a proud parent putting their child's crayon drawing up on the fridge, most people are incapable of fairly evaluating their own work. And then they show it to other gamedevs, here, on reddit or demoday, who then assess it on a purely technical basis and not as a consumer, and end up "hugboxing" or "crabbing" on that basis.

Finding the people who might actually buy and play your and showing your game to them is something agdg struggles with, and so 7 years of development go by and a week before release they make some frantic posts on reddit about how they made a game but it's too little too late.

I think a fixation on japanese culture has rendered most of agdg completely incapable of finding commercial success, because despite being attuned to japanese cultural proclivities and able to produce things that should work within that culture, they do not in fact sell their games to the japanese, or have a japanese audience or a japanese community or in fact even speak the japanese language.

It's a glaring disconnect that I think accounts for a lot of agdg failures.

I think both Shimapanzer and Armaphract certainly have an audience, but they're massively overscoped and will probably never ship. Even Symphony of War made $6m, which is RPGMaker-slop of the same genre. The tactics curse is real. They're focusing too much on nice 3D graphics when they don't even close to a complete game yet. Added some gray/white health blips UI images so the player can see which hearts they are missing that they have not unlocked yet by defeating bosses, or after they take damage.

People mock Jocko for this meme but it actually kinda works. In the 90s my older brother saw me hopping on one foot and bitching because I stubbed my toe really hard. He told me back then something similar to Jocko.
"Anon, if you ever hurt yourself like that just say 'This doesn't hurt, it feels good!' and it will stop hurting!".
I thought he was a retard but I started doing it and haven't stopped to this day because it genuinely flips a switch in your mind and instantly takes your mind off the pain. I've stubbed my toe nearly hard enough to break a bone at times and I just go "Aaaaawwwwwww FUCK that felt good!" and the pain just kind of fades to the background.
