Most of the kids are not built for this life but they view it as a "what else can we do / what else do we have?" situation. The only real priority is surviving until they reach the promised land.

In the Grove it was the druids who keep them afloat but their trader mentions how their resources are finite. As for not getting kicked out and eventually being able to continue their journey, well, they can thank all this to the player. Between the first two acts 4 out of the 11 Tiefling kids disappeared. It's only reasonable to assume they died but if Larian hides living kids in Photo Mode you can imagine their policy regarding their corpses. Then Zevlor bailed and like half of the adults got massacred in the ambush, including their main guard and their martial trainer. So it's easy to see why they didn't trust the Tiefling adults to provide. Remember, the whole Arabella situation (and then Mol offering you the same job) stemmed from the kids wanting to prevent the completion of the ritual as they felt the adults just sat on their asses.
