After reading the chapter and his wiki profile, I understand why the old dude npc has so much fanart. He is the one who successfully performed the modernization of Japan. Takasugi and Ryoma were important (although with opposite stances about foreigners) but they tragically died young. Katsu performed negotiations between factions that led to less bloodshed and opened the gates of the new era, then retired and died of old age.

Now it's over, I am not sure how I feel about Gensai and Danjo. I liked them because they are hot, but they felt kind of deus ex-machina characters as "enemy you must cut down" and the "cutter." While the emotional substance and plot were on the Shinsengumi drama, and even on Ryoma's teacher. Gensai could have been more involved as a hittokiri too, but she felt more riding on her "I'm ackstually from another world and have a mysterious connection to Guda" which overrode her historical stuff.
