There are stories written of necrons and tau and deldar killing dozens of marines, and there are also stories written of single marines routing entire armies, or a small squad destroying entire invasion forces. The capabilities of marines varies by the current story's plot requirements.There are directly conflicting stories as well. We've seen marines die to one bullet before, but we also have physiology books talking about how they have two hearts that restart each other and how their bones are made of adamantine and all this crazy stuff that makes the prior example not make sense. The bottom line is that there are a ton of directly conflicting marine powerlevels. Sometimes they can run through walls and punch necron lords to death (happened in a canon BL novel) while other times they are downed by one single stubber round to the head (also happened in canon movie). So all discussions of marine power level are pretty moot, since it varies, and GW has always just shrugged and said it's all canon.However, I think that the physiology pages from the codecies and main rulebook would take precedent, since they are not battlefield stories that can be exaggerated by an unreliable narrator, they are author descriptions of what makes a marine, so they're not subject to unreliable narrator. And in these, they describe the ability to spit acid, lift cars, punch through concrete, redundant hearts, go long times without eating or breathing, have literal targeting computers in their brains, and such things. So they have some insane capabilities straight from the out-of-universe descriptions, so I tend to weigh in on the side of marinewank and marines being insane killing machines whenever this discussion comes up.So yes, a marine could most likely kill the RT and their cronies. He's faster than them, tougher than them, stronger than them, and has various physical and mental upgrades they don't have.

He's an amoral leader who's onlly concern is the survival of the species. Most of his enemies are worse than he is, so he looks "good" in some ways relatively speaking, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention his long list of brutalities.40k is a story of survival, not good vs evil. Chaos is very evil and seeks the destruction of humanity, as do some of the other factions like the tyranids and necrons, but the imperium os not really "good", and neither is the Emperor. It's fundamentally a story about the lengths the human species goes to survive in a galaxy that is extremely hostile.One could argue that chaos is worse so it is still "good vs evil" in that sense, but the Imperium is not a good guy in the traditional sense. The storytelling in 40k is good when it wants to be, lots of people don't give it enough credit since it's also just pulpy nonsense to sell a game, but there is some nice storytelling bits here and there.

Good story, good characters, excellent look into the setting, and some actual drama and spectacular moments. It's the rare well-written 40k novel. It also covers my personal favorite aspect of 40k, which is the Inquisition.For a more lighthearted story that is also pretty well written, another popular suggestion that I agree with is Ciaphas Cain novels. They're genuinely funny, but they're also a look into an average normal dude just trying to do what is reasonable in a galaxy that chews up reasonable people. Gaunt's Ghosts is also generally pretty good, it has a more military theme to it if you like the Imperial Guard, and it goes into interesting themes like how the survivors would live after their planet is destroyed. Notice none of these are about marines lol. If you want some marine books, the horus heresy actually deals with some interesting themes like how the Emperor treated them and why the heresy happened, the human side of marines, but honestly you don't need to read all 60 or whatever novels in that series, just grab a summary. I didn't even read them all and I massive 40k nerd who's been playing for like 19 years. It's just too much, and marines are not what I like about the setting. But I read a good number of them and it's some interesting stuff, especially the perspective and psyche of the traitor legions.
