Need opinions:

I'm working on the second zone, and in this one you're flying through an ion storm that disables one ships weapons for around 5-6 seconds at a time, then it switches. So I wanted to kind of do a chasing motif, changing from the perspective of the ship chasing and firing, and the ship running.

But because battles happen a lot I don't want the visuals for changing perspectives to take a long time. So I came up with a black slider effect, or, the camera rotates quickly, going behind each ship.

1st half of the vid is the rotating camera, second half is the black slider. Which one is better? I WANT to like the rotating camera but because the ships need to rotate so fast, it looks off(Ignore some of the effects btw, still WIP)

maybe it looks off because it's not actually being interpolated along the shortest path, but wobbles a bit. i would also try adding some easing, more camera angles and actually use instant cuts every now and then. don't like the slider, it seems more fit for less local transitions like if you were to show a ship's interior or something.

This is true for books though, I wrote a DOGSHIT fantasy book that will never leave scrivener but it taught me so much about long-term project planning. You have to chart a course of indeterminate length through an infinite space bound only by the rules you come up with. It's like playing chess vs. nobody. A unique experience that teaches you a lot about being creative.

With games it's a little less soul-churning because you're already bound by engines and graphics libraries and assets so you don't ever get the feeling of being adrift in the middle of it. You get stuck but that's not the same thing. Making a game is more like getting unstuck from frustrating circumstances 5000 times in a row. So if nobody plays it, you feel like you shouldn't have bothered getting stuck 5000 times in the first place. Anyways. I'm sure neither of us watched that video and you're just making a joke about something you saw on your youtube. Just a little thought I thought I'd share to keep the thread lively haha :)

I am a tad bit biased for GMS2 because that's what I've went with, and it worked out great for me. There are lot of youtube videos out there for specific things like the one you are looking for. Back when I've made that choice though, it was 3.2 for Godot, it probably has gotten much better.

Either way, starting with another engine from scratch, is going to give you a lot of work to do things that come out of the box over there. But if you stick with it, you'll have a codebase you're really the master of.

My point was different. If you have a major language or engine, like C#, there exists a major corpus for LLMs like ChatGPT to learn from. Conversely, if there exists a newly created engine or language, and little code and documentation, the corpus is much worse, and therefore any LLM, including ChatGPT, will perform way worse.

LLM performance is better, the more data there is.

Thus, ChatGPT and other LLMs should do worse at handling Defold and Stride than larger engines like Unity and Godot.

Do you have extensive experience with LLMs or you mean in theory? At work we use claude to maintain an extremely old piece of software that we need to bring a retired engineer on site for like twice a year, it's incomprehensible assembly and ocaml code and it's able to replace our boomer swe just fine, with proper supervision ofc. With LLMs you don't even need docs they just need the code that's make them so great and no it makes smaller engine without docs but battle tested features more interesting, I'd wager modifying stride or defold's source code is easier than bigger engines even with more "docs".

There are large corpuses for those. At a guess, maybe 10,000 OCaml source files on Github.

I am now uncertain about my point regarding projects, but my point regarding languages I think holds. If there is a large corpus for a language, the LLM can data mine the language elsewhere, and apply that to a small project. Though the small size of the project can still be a hindrance, depending on usage.

It also depends on what the LLM is used for.

How many codebases that are similar to yours do you believe that there exist online? As in, similar purpose, design, architecture, etc.? There are plenty of OCaml code to train on, but I don't know if there is a lot of open source code (or AI assistant stolen code) to data mine from for your specific case.

Of course, an LLM might be able to do some useful things starting from scratch on just one small project, but I imagine that its performance for a wider range of tasks increases if it can learn from similar projects. Or maybe its performance increases in some ways for some tasks, and might worsen for others.

One question then might be how transferable engine training data is between game engines, in different regards, like architecture and design. Will an LLM trained on Godot perform better at Defold than without Godot training data?

Also depends on the expected quality, and the issue of hallucinations and other LLM challenges.

A worst-case is probably a new, small game engine with its own custom scripting language with basically no corpus to data mine.

I guess I haven't tried other engines but I find Unity to be pretty easy to develop in. Although the game I'm making now is extremely easy. Basically 1 gameplay scene, Home Menu Scene, and then a few cinematic scenes. But really 1 scene for the whole game. I was making an RPG that I'll get back to, that takes a bit more work fucking around with piecing the map together and moving items around between scenes. But regardless I enjoy Unity very much for my usecases.
