Fallout 4 has terrible writing, art direction, quests, etc.
But it's Bethesda's peak at actually being a video game
Having your fingers on WASD+mouse is much more enjoyable in it than in Fallout 3 or New Vegas
The movement feels better, the gunfights are more dynamic
Going back to the FO3 engine is agonizing in comparison, it's like trying to play Wolfenstein 3D after Quake
>>
>>541323546
I am a rare breed of autist that sucks so much at shooting that all shooters feel the same and I can only play fallout with vats
>>

Art direction is Kino, and the writing is mid at worse. Slightly better then Fallout 3. Quests are fine also.

>Fallout 4 has terrible writing, art direction, quests, etc.
That's every Bethesda game since Morrowind. People give Fallout 4 too much attention and criticism because it came after NV which is almost a perfect game
Even the writing and designs, two things that are most often criticised in Fallout 4 are way better than anything in Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. Does assault rifle look stupid? Yes. Was there a good idea behind it? Yeah, it looks pretty good in PA hands

I still have more hours in Skyrim than in Fallout 4. And yes, 99% of Skyrim mods are complete trash, Fallout 4 also has its share of trash, but when it comes to really good mods, Fallout 4 may have a bit more of them.
A lot of good mods for Skyrim simply add things that Fallout 4 already has in vanilla. Stuff like gore or locational damage
As for quest mods, Skyrim does indeed have way more but they are way worse. SS2, AR2, and 3dnpcs are far superior to anything Skyrim has to offer (yes, even 3dnpcs for Skyrim). Also it feels like Skyrim modders are just cursed, no one can record and tweak sound properly. Mods from 2013 for NV have better voice acting quality than anything for Skyrim.
>>541326312
Energy weapons basically don't exist in Fallout 1/2. Add more agility and don't take less than 5 strength, that's the minimum requirement for pistols. 3 Endurance literally borders on erectile dysfunction.

An energy weapons run in Fallout 1 basically relies on abusing rng until you get an Alien blaster or running ahead to Necropolis for the plasma pistol in the sewer

It's been so long since I played 2, you can get a laser pistol pretty early can't you?
Tagging energy weapons feels meta in both games because you're accepting increased early difficulty to not waste resources in Small Guns

I still think about Steel Dawn sometimes
That it's one of the only moments in 76 that even attempts to have any nuance because Shin is an abrasive cunt but is factually correct about the FEV scientists being absolute psychos and Rahmani being a moron on a power trip

I worry that this was by accident and the actual intent was just that Rahmani was the good guy and Shin was the evil guy
>>

You can use it only with penalties, just like NV. But yeah, character creation in Fallout 1/2 is really bad, you have almost no choice.

some random stuff just to teach myself how modding works.
-new perks
-new weapons, armor, chems, ammo
-new gear synergizes with new and vanilla perks
-unmarked quest about finding treasure and following a trail of other dead adventurers
-repairman npc involved in that quest who can also ‘upgrade’ some vanilla weapons to better, refurbished versions. can also ‘fix’ some of the ‘broken’ gear you find during the quest, but it’s more of a sidegrade/different playstyle sort of thing, like turning a melee weapon into a ranged weapon.

But I see they added a fuckton of shit and are adding more. But is it all a massive grind still or can I get most of the new stuff relatively quickly compared to how fucking long it took to get all the gold shit.

They started putting new weapons or essential camp objects like a freezer that stores your food indefinitely on the scoreboards but those are always obtainable from grinding an absolute absurd amount of gold bullion. >>541349307
Not him but, as fun as it is to clown on Starfield, the idea that its a failure is pretty baseless. Like
-It was the top selling game of the month it came out
-It was the 10th best selling game of the year
-It was the third most profitable game on Steam in 2023.
-By the end of 2023it had more play time, and a higher completion rate, then BG3, despite BG3 coming out over a month earlier.
-It was Bethesda's biggest launch ever
-For over a year after it came out it was on Xbox's most played games list, and usually above, Bethesda's other titles, and even other competitors like BG3, and CP2077
-The game did so well Bethesda changed thier plans for DLC going forward, wanting to support not only Starfield, but future games, with yearly Far Harbor sized DLCs for as long as they can.
-While Steam shows low player counts, this doesn't account for gamepass. And people on Plebbit have estimated, based on how counters on paid mods go up when people launch the game, there's still around 10,000 people or so playing Starfield daily
Like.... its ultra successful.

I don't think they will do that for anything but Fallout games. That works in Fallout because Fallout is supposed to be a game about large factions fighting each other over petty reasons like land/resources. Elder Scrolls factions aren't really like that, so I wouldn't expect TES 6 to have like the fighters, Mages, and Thieves Guilds, and the DB, fighting each other. Same with Starfield's factions. Like, Ryujin has no reason to get involved with the Crimson Fleet or UC Vanguard or w/e.

It also creates differences between games, so they don't all feel like clones of each other.

yeah i don't expect it for TES since it's established, but i did hope for it in starfield just. my main problem with it is a hindsight one because of how starfield's NG+ is set up to give you the perfect in-universe reason to be able to do everything on the same character. but it's pointless because you can just join every faction in the same iteration anyway, and the choices have barely any effect on the world itself. they wasted the unity imo
>>
One thing I noticed about the content creators and players of Fallout 76 is that they literally haven't played previous games. It makes me wonder why Bethesda is trying so hard to evoke nostalgia when by the looks of it most players haven't even played Fallout 4 let alone Fallout 3 and NV.

DiMA could have been an amazing main villain if only Far Harbor was more fleshed out. He's definitely the best Fallout 4 character, feels like he escaped from a much better written game. Plus his design is fucking awesome. Unlike the very humanlike synthetics of the base game, his look feels a lot closer to the art design of the classic Fallout games.

I did not like DiMA when I first met him in my last playthrough. It'd been a couple years since I played this game, so it may as well have been a new first impression.
He was all high-and-mighty, asking questions of you he had no right of asking. Very holier-than-thou. And all of that being revealed as a facade was very cathartic.

That is to say I like him as a villain as well.
I liked that you could confront him and he could own up to it. And depending on your actions on the island the Harbormen would either support- or disagree with you and your decisions. It was a genuinely enjoyable experience.
I look forward to playing this DLC anytime I start a new game now.

I also love the giant hermit crabs (and frankly every creature on this island) but I have a soft spot for hermit crabs in general.

I would argue that Fallout 4 is a decent RPG, especially with mods like picrel. Its only drawback is the writing and even then I don't think it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
Fallout 4 has actual factions and characters with real motivations and goals, which is already better than Skyrim, Oblivion, and Fallout 4.
>>
>>541419710
i remember naively believing it couldn't go any other way but forward and blow FNV out of the water when it comes to rpg mechanics, quest variation and quality as well as plot depth

>Its only drawback is the writing and even then I don't think it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
Yeah. I'm not gonna sit here and claim Fallout 4's writing is great by any measure, it isn't, but there's always been this weird, almost religious, need by some people to make Bethesda's writing out to be far worse then it actually is.

The in famous "what do they eat!?" nonsense from Fallout 3, despite the game showing and telling us what they eat, and where they get it, and the "you wouldn't understand" meme from Fallout 4, despite the fact Shaun never actually says anything like that.
>>
>>541420235
Fallout 4 has some of my favourite quests in videogames in it. Some of them I find genuinely touching or funny.

I went to do Vault 118 because it had a pair of goggles I wanted. I'd read a little bit about it being an unfinished vault and I figured it'd be empty.
I get to the button, press E, and I hear a Mr. Handy over the speaker asking if I was the detective they'd hired, because there'd been a murder.
Knowing that the vault was intended for rich fuckers I put my hands over my face, chuckled audibly, and said "oh my god the robot staff are doing a pretend murder mystery"
I enter the vault, walk into the main room.
Before me lies a sight that made me laugh out loud.
A robobrain bot, knocked over, cracked dome.

That quest was a lot of fun, too.
>>
>>541420068
Lets not pretend NV had amazing writing either. The game was full of plotholes, and nonsensical character actions. Most of the praise is from people clapping every time they see [Guns 49/50] skill checks in dialogue.

NV really is the main reason for the hatred towards Fallout 4, it's just too good. Bethesda obviously tried and Fallout 4 has the most variety in quests of all their games for example, but it's still Bethesda.
>>541420235
‘you wouldn't understand’ comes from a failed skill check. But I still think that ‘what do they eat!?’ is a valid complaint, since water is literally one of the key plot points of the entire Fallout 3. It's the same shit as the stupid ending of Fallout 3. People wouldn't complain so much about having to sacrifice yourself if you were just separated from companion or the possibility of using a companion was simply not mentioned, but Bethesda really needed to point out the obvious plot hole with that muh destiny shit

No, I looked though Shaun's dialogue in both the CK, and on the wiki. He never utters that line.

>But I still think that ‘what do they eat!?’ is a valid complaint, since water is literally one of the key plot points of the entire Fallout 3.
Ehh. The game goes out of its way to show people making small water purifiers, and it being just barely enough to keep people alive but not "thrive" as Eden says over the radio. As for actual food
-We see people raising Brahmin for food and milk across the wastelad(in fact, someone counted and there's more domesticated brahmin being used for farming in Fo3 then in Fo4)
-We see people hunting things like Mirelurks, mole rats, giant ants, etc. etc. for food
-We see people had set up a mirelurk farm and processing station under the Anchorage war memorial, which was only destroyed just recently
-We can read about how Rivet city grows fresh food to trade with other settlements for scrap to repair the ship
-We know mutfruit grows in the capital wasteland
-We see trade with places like Point Lookout for stuff like Punga
-We can visibly see trade caravans connecting most of the major settlemens in the region, explaining how supplies are carried around.

>>
>>541420068
why would you ever expect that out of a bethesda game
>>541420589
>plotholes, and nonsensical character actions
none of these matter whatsoever when it comes to rpg writing where the main engine is world reactivity and player agency
>>
>>541421296
I'd argue that choice and consequence, aka world reactivity and player agency, only have real value when the choices you make, and the consequences of those choices, have a logical and believable basis within the setting of the game world. Any retard can make up a quest with 100 different choices, and 100 different endings, when they don't have to make any of it make sense, or follow logic. That isn't good writing, or good game design, its just vapid padding to appease retards who don't care about what they're playing.
>>
>>541421220
it was a mod for FNV that featured a vault inhabited by robots and the central quest was a murder mystery you had to solve in that vault.
it's regarded as one of the good/best dialogue based mods ever made

>>
>>541421529
>>541421628
They start out similar but develop in completely different directions. And well autumn leaves is definitely better.
>>
>>541421472
FNV has excellent thematic throughline with the side quests and this is the main reason it's praised for, not sure who fed you this retarded take or you just played the game yourself and came to the conclusion independently in case you're the retarded one. If every narrative director could whip up a game where your choices have similar consequence as FNV and this was industry norm then FNV wouldn't be a special game among modern RPGs
>>
>>541421824
Most of the choices in NV had no real impact in the game itself though. All they do is a change a post game slideshow which games had been doing since the 90s.
>>
>>541421954
Your choices entirely change how you play the game. No other game lets you miss 70% of its content on 1 play through. Only one I can think of that comes close is age of decadence.
>>
>>541422128
>No other game lets you miss 70% of its content on 1 play through
That's generally a fault of NV being poorly designed. Had Obsidian used their time better they could've actually given the Legion some real content, instead of it just blocking you off from like 70% of the game.
>>
>>541422128
Fallout 4 is not that different from it. It's harder to lose access to certain quests but it's still possible. I'm not sure if you noticed but the main quest in Fallout 4 is literally built on the same principle as NV.
Kellogg = Benny
Diamond City = New Vegas
Minutemen = Yes Man
>>
>>541422354
That's only faulty design if you view your RPG mechanics through the same data driven, ROI driven metrics AAA execs do where they refuse to let their devs design a game where content can be missed, which leads to every game being the same shit even if you play good or evil characters. Like take BG3 for example.
>>
>>541422682
Na, there's a difference between real C&C blocking you off from quest, and something even Obsidian admitted to, that they just didn't have the time to make a lot of legion content. No one said anything about doing everything in one playthrough. That's just you making things up to deflect.
>>
>>541421296
>why would you ever expect that out of a bethesda game
as i already mentioned i was rather naive back then.
i had some doubts after playing skyrim, but not really knowing who is bethesda and how it operates i assumed they'd use a different design approach when producing fallout series games. i thought they'd learn from FNV's positive critical reception etc.
>>
>>541422682
You are rather comparing linear games and open-ended ones.
And again, Fallout 4 fits your description of NV. You can easily miss most of the quests and each playthrough can be quite different.
>>
>>541422618
On a superficial level. Most open world games tend to have a degree of character motivation that connects every player character so they have some motivation to do X. I don't wanna start talking about FO4 but their world cohesion is much less than FNV but the world is still better designed than FO3. The problem is that the narrative loses the plot once you get to Diamond City and you're meant to start caring about Kellogg and hunting him down and Shaun. Meanwhile FNV just uses you getting to the strip as an introduction and tells you the world is your oyster, here are the main players go check them out.
>>
>>541422962
>i thought they'd learn from FNV's positive critical reception etc.
Not him but, they did, both Fallout 4, and Starfield, offer more in the way of making choices during major questlines and side quests then Skyrim or Fo3 did.

The way they do companions in those games was also obviously based on reception to NV's companions.
>>
>>541422796
I used the ability to miss content as an example of why FNV is special among modern RPGs. In FO4 you can at the same time be the leader of like all the factions and the raider boss as well. Entirely different design philosophies.
>>541422982
BG3 shouldn't be an "open-ended" game. It should have multiple playthrough potential but once you play through it once you've basically seen 95% of it.

combat shotgun sniper rifle. I've had this joke idea for a while now and I hope it actually works.
>>
>>541423058
I see it as the opposite.

NV's biggest issue is that it changes the traditional Fallout style opening used in Fallout 1/2/3/4/76(ish on that last one) where you start off as a person from an isolated community, sent out to help your family(biological or community) and get wrapped up in a larger plt that threatens your home. This narrative style works because it explains why the character, who starts off as a level 1 moron with no real skills, is so dedicated to exploring this hostile wasteland, full of horrible mutants.

New Vegas on the other hand gives you no real reason to care about going after Benny besides idle curiosity, which isn't a great motivation(even Sawyer once said they should've allowed the player to just leave the Mojave via the Mojave outpost). And, once you get to Vegas, both the NCR and Legion just jump you, asking you do become their top guy, even though you can reach NV without doing anything of note. Which is made worse by the fact you have no reason to care about the war in the Mojave because you have no ties to the people, or the area.

Going after Kellogg is a much more realistic, and stronger, motivation for the character in Fo4, since they need to do so to find their son, compared to NV where your motivation is literally just "I have to do this to beat the game, and that's it"
>>
>>541423323
seems like F4 companions were the only thing that was a noticable improvement over FNV
>inb4 gunplay and graphical fidelity
it's a basic prerequisite for games like this
>>
>>541423424
> In FO4 you can at the same time be the leader of like all the factions
Except you can't become the leader of the BoS or Railroad, and, by the end of the MQ, you have to at least destroy the Institute, and/or destroy the Railroad and BoS. You literally cannot become leader of everything/do everything in one playthrough.
>>
>>541423058
>On a superficial level
No, these games have literally the same world design. Fallout 4 is more on rails but denying their similarities is simply silly.
>>541423424
Yes, but it's impossible to achieve such variety in playthroughs without a proper open world. CRPGs like this are bound to be relatively linear, the best you can hope for is the same events but from a different perspective.
Something like Rogue Trader or Pathfinder games would be a better example. You still visit the same places and have roughly the same goals, but the motives and details are completely different.
>>541423878
NV was not made by Bethesda, you should compare Fallout 4 with Skyrim and Fallout 3.
>>
>>541423431

>it's a basic prerequisite for games like this
>looks at the RPG genre which, outside of a few titles has been largely stuck just copying BG2 for over 20 years
Its really not in this line of games.
>>
>>541423765
>New Vegas on the other hand gives you no real reason to care about going after Benny besides idle curiosity, which isn't a great motivation
Revenge against the man who shot you in the head and left you for dead, professional obligation to finish your job, and once you get the Vegas House makes you his right hand man and tells you to get the chip from Benny.
>>
>>541423989
>No, these games have literally the same world design. Fallout 4 is more on rails but denying their similarities is simply silly.
i havent played fo4 in a while so i wont fight you too much on this, but i certainly don't agree it's "literally same world design". you can become a raider boss and still walk around your communities as accepted. in NV you straight up get shot on sight if you enter the strip as a legion faction member.
>Yes, but it's impossible to achieve such variety in playthroughs without a proper open world
you don't need an open world. you just need to design gameplay sections for different playthrough. i was really hoping i could ally with the squid-alien's human ruler puppet whose name i forgot in the story, but he just gets killed off since the story is just not interested, or isnt capable of creating junctions where players get to miss huge amounts of content. arguably the "open world" nature of bg3 is a culprit in this because open world tends to drain your resources more than it would to just create a good and evil player playthrough paths.

also as a side, i think pathfinder at least kingmaker does this in the worst way possible since it has time limits and you can easily miss quests simply because a lot of them progress on their own ignoring what you are doing.
>>
>>541424667
>Revenge against the man who shot you in the head and left you for dead
Which just comes across are pure psychopath behavior since the wasteland is full of giant mutants, and in the middle of war. This is even less logical or relatable behavior then some guy going off into downtown Compton to get revenge on the gangs for shooting him would be. Everyone would look at that person and call them crazy.
>professional obligation to finish your job,
Professional obligation would've been to finish the job you were originally assigned. Not to take on the extra duty of becoming a one man murder machine. Like, if you're hired to deliver some food to someone's house, and someone shots you, and steals the food, the only professional obligation you have is to call the cops, since its the cops job to handle this sort of situation, not yours.
>and once you get the Vegas House makes you his right hand man and tells you to get the chip from Benny
Which also doesn't make sense given that you can reach Vegas without actually DOING anything of note, or that requires any skills, so House making you his right hand makes little sense when he can just hire far better equipped mercs to do it for him.

This unlike Fallout 4 where the factions only let you in because you actually DO something for them that showcases some basic worthwhile skills.
>>
>>541324753
Fallout 3's art direction was good though. It was graphically not as advanced as 4 of course, but it expressed a gritty feeling more authentic to the originals. After Adam Adamowicz died they went brighter and more colourful for 4.

That's just wrong. Factions only care about their own reputation, so you can even help both Legion and NCR to a certain point and only become a target when you cross the line.

Factions in Fallout 4 are mutually exclusive. The best you can hope for is to kill the Institute by siding with the Minutemen and be friends with the Brotherhood of Steel and Railroad but it requires a very specific order of quests
>>
>>541426385
what happens if you wear institute outfit around railroad NPCs?
>>
>>541426598
what changes if you walk around as the leader of BoS? nothing really. leader of the institute? nah whatever. raider overboss? whatever.

walk around as a leagionnaire? red equals dead.
>>
>>541426602
Nothing but random dialogues because Fallout 4 doesn't have a disguise system and that's for the best. I never wear a disguise in NV because it has a good chance of completely ruining your character's reputation. This entire system is completely broken.
>Put NCR disguise to kill the president
>Did the job and took off the disguise
>Game broke and now Legion thinks I'm their enemy forever
>>
>>541426949
The issue with disguise systems goes even beyond that. Like, your character can become so well known that NCR and Legion soldiers recognize your face on sight, even from a distance. But... the moment you put on armor, that doesn't even cover your face, they immediately forget who you are simply because it has the NCR or Legion logo on it. Like.... whut?
>>
>>541427086
ironically bugthesda's system of no witnesses is better
>>
>>541426949
but that's the thing. i want the world to feel like it's reacting to me doing things in the world.

even fo2 had a basic version of this. become a raider? now the ncr wants to spank your butt.

i want fo4 to do something similar to how nv handled playing as the evil guy. like just turn everyone hostile if i keep ignoring the devs, or something. nothing breaks my immersion faster than being the evil badguy but the world treats me like im doing a good guy playthrough.

Anon, other factions become hostile towards you if you join one of the factions, it's the same as NCR/Legion.
>>541427312
Fallout 4 literally has this, you can provoke all factions except the Minutemen.
>>
>>541427202
Na, the system has a bug where like chickens could report crimes. But the witness system is a lot more functional.
>>
>>541427416
>you can provoke all factions except the Minutemen.
You can even semi-piss off the Minutemen. If you join the raiders in Nuka world Preston says he wont work with you until the renounce them and leave,
>>
>>541427416
not really to the scope of NV. i was insittute in my playthru in 2015, i used x01 institute paint, but in the world that comes across as inconsequential, since you only have hostile enemy factions show up in like 1 or 2 quests or in form of some generic random encounter. you can walk around as scary big institute guy in goodneighbour or diamond city and its just whatever, game doesnt care so why would i?

>>541427416
I would also add that Fallout 4 is probably better than NV in this regard due to random encounters.
Different factions have a bunch of different responses to your aggression, like BOS having heavy patrols and vertibird support or the Institute setting up ambushes with teleportation. Meanwhile NV is limited to one Legion/NCR assassination squad per game.
>>541427958
>you can walk around as scary big institute guy in goodneighbour or diamond city and its just whatever
It is exactly the same in NV.
Your reputation and standing with NCR will have absolutely no effect on your relationship with Khans. Fallout 4 probably has even more reactivity in this regard because NPCs there have way more random lines that depend on your actions.
>>
If you put on remnants armor in NV all of the NCR should be hostile desu

My problem with the art direction is that I often want to explore and enjoy the world, but I end up disappointed with how empty it is. The world design of Fallout 4 (for example) would work if the vaults JUST opened and people were still rebuilding, by now the world should be more than random disorganised raiders shooting at each other.
>>
>>541420682
It seems to me like Bethesda actually tried on everything but the main story. It just feels like an afterthought to me with how poorly fleshed out the factions are. I don't *hate* the story, but I've got most of my fun out of fo4 by just running around the world. Whenever I replay the game, I don't do it because I want to experience the story, I just end up enjoying finding the collectables and legendary weapons.
>>
>>541447958

This has never been the case. Fallout has always made it clear that, outside the NCR, its just raider tribes, cannibals, and mutants.

>>
>>541451582

>>
>>541451582
The CPG happened around 100 years before Fallout 4 begins. Almost no one besides some ghouls were alive when it happened.
>>
>>541451906
sure I get that but Bethesda really downplays the potency of generational memory, that kind of thing would be spoken about among communities for a very long time. besides, the amount of ghouls in the commonwealth where that would be actual living memory is not insignificant.
>>
>>541450325
1. I think the institute is evil for the sake of being evil, with the leader being your son a lazy way for Bethesda to give you a reason to join them.

2. I don't ever remember there being justification other than calling them "abominations" as to why the brotherhood hates synths so bad.

3. There is apparently an internal struggle in the railroad about whether things like protectrons and the like should be treated similar to synths, and (from what I've seen) this is never elaborated upon again.

My last problem is that they never elaborate much on the end goal for all these factions. Fallout 4 had a great opportunity with it's post game to show how these factions would govern the commonwealth, and nearly nothing changes at the end of their questlines.

The minutemen are basically like yes man so I don't have any problem with them other than Preston "another settlement needs our help" Garvey.

I'm open to my mind being changed though, I haven't played fo4 nearly as much as the other games. (I have about 110hrs total)
>>
>>541453113
>I don't ever remember there being justification other than calling them "abominations" as to why the brotherhood hates synths so bad.
Literally play Fallout Tactics and Fallout 3. The BoS has had bad run ins with AI.
> I think the institute is evil for the sake of being evil,
The game does make it clear that a lot of what the Institute is blamed for wasn't their fault. Like the CPG is implied to have been collapsing before they even got involved, and the Broken Mask was an actual accident. Even some stuff like the FEV research was being kept hidden from even higher ups like Madison Li, and wasn't reflective of what the whole Institute wanted.
>My last problem is that they never elaborate much on the end goal for all these factions.
They do tell us this though
-The Institute wants to remain underground, developing synths, and advancing science.
-The BoS wants to purge all the raids, super mutants, synths, and feral ghouls, while retrieving all the uncollected tech, just like they did in the Capital Wasteland.
-The Railroad wants to free the synths from the Institute, and then work toward keeping them safe from people on the surface
-The Minutemen are just a mutual defense pact of settlements in the region. They aren't really an organization in the traditional sense, and thus has no unified goal.

>Literally play Fallout Tactics and Fallout 3. The BoS has had bad run ins with AI.
Can you elaborate? I can imagine what you mean by Fo3 (Eden), but I have not played tactics.

On a less related note, I wish you had more control over the factions. Using the institute as an example: the radio message you give out at the end to the commonwealth is kinda cool, but I wish you could more definitively decide try to get support from settlements and cities in the commonwealth. This goes for all factions by the way. I agree that all the factions do have goals, but nearly all of them seem basically unwilling to so much as make ANY attempt to get other on their side other than the brotherhood (which is the faction that I think should be refusing alliances the most). I think is a symptom of the world of Fallout 4 itself not having larger subfactions though.

>The game does make it clear that a lot of what the Institute is blamed for wasn't their fault. Even some stuff like the FEV research was being kept hidden from even higher ups like Madison Li, and wasn't reflective of what the whole Institute wanted.
I agree something like Broken Mask is an accident, but I think the institute should have atleast tried to fake apologise for stuff like this and the CPG massacre. Even if you think everyone in the wasteland is just cannon fodder, I'd assume you'd atleast want them to not hate you; it feels like they're just setting themselves up for the commonwealth to screw them, literally no one you meet in the commonwealth has even slightly positive views of them. On the FEV reasearch thing, I can see how not all the institute would agree with such a thing, but I can't see any justification in it. To me, it just makes them too mustache-twirlingly evil.

>Can you elaborate? I can imagine what you mean by Fo3 (Eden), but I have not played tactics.
The main villain of Fallout Tactics was known as the Calculator, and artificial intelligence that was in Vault 0, which was supposed to be the master control Vault. It was originally designed to have large manufacturing capabilities, which included the ability to mass large hordes of machines to help people rebuild. However, The Calculator went haywire, and used it machine army to try to exterminate all human life, waging a massive war across the Midwest that was only stopped by the efforts of the Midwestern chapter of the Brotherhood.
> but nearly all of them seem basically unwilling to so much as make ANY attempt to get other on their side other than the brotherhood (which is the faction that I think should be refusing alliances the most)
Well the BoS in based on Lyons' Brotherhood from Fallout 3, and Lyons was open to Wastelanders joining, and helping the BoS. Maxson kept most of Lyons' ideals, though he did start collecting technology against which Lyons had abandoned, and became more slective about who they let in. But Lyons and Maxson knew how the BoS was dying out west due to its refusal to change, and accept help from others(which is what led to the BoS/NCR was.
>but I think the institute should have atleast tried to fake apologise for stuff like this and the CPG massacre.
The issue is that apologizing wouldn't have done anything. Broken Mask happened decades after the CPG, and by that point everyone on the surface believed the Institute to be behind every bad thing that went on. Why bother trying to apologize to people who are just going to consider it fake?
>On the FEV reasearch thing, I can see how not all the institute would agree with such a thing, but I can't see any justification in it
The FEV research was being done to develop better strains of FEV for use in Gen 3 synths, since Gen 3's are made using FEV.

>tactics
it's kinda like wasteland i guess, the bos in tactics were originally iirc going to exterminate the remnants of the unity but their blimps get zapped out of the sky by a storm and they end up fighting raiders, beastlords, remnants of the master's army which proves to be pretty challenging for the bos, and eventually robots coming from a half brain half robot ai thing in a vault-- who will curbstomp the shit out of you if you don't get better weapons lol. and then it's a slugfest against the robots until you defeat their main brain ai thing

>Russia
probably collapsed in the fallout universe without a single nuke detonating in it.
whenever russia gets mentioned in any fallout related discussion it always reminds me of that anecdote that supposedly occured when one of the creative leads was talking to some russian colleague on the phone during the development of the first fallout game when he suddenly heard muffled shots being fired off in the background.
when he asked what it was the russian answered almost nonchalantly: "it's the russian mafia shooting somewhere in the streets".
supposedly that was when he realized post-soviet russia would not make a plausible geopolitical opponent for their fictional america and they went with a powerful china instead.
but realistically it's safe to assume other factors also played a role in that decision, one of them being the need to avoid boring caricatures of the russian boogeyman, seeing as how the relations warmed up after the iron curtain drop
>>
>>541486186
Russia's place in the Fallout lore is a bit unclear. China has taken its spot as the big bad guy but Russia is still important enough to have its envoys in the Vault
>>
>>541481924
>>541482629
Realistically they probably would've avoided the nukes almost entirely, but that'd come with its own set of problems
First of all the global supply chain vanished in a couple of hours so while European governments are still fully-functioning, they'd have to deal with shortages of everything.
And just because they weren't hit doesn't mean that nuclear winter wouldn't affect them. Also the air and water is very much poison. Think of how irradiated the entire fucking ocean is in Fallout 4 210 years later, that's still a problem for Europe. Disease would be rampant and medical supplies scarce.

Maybe they weren't hit by nukes, but maybe in some regards that makes things worse. In the Mad Max world that America would've been, you can fight for whatever supplies you need or die trying. There'd still be just enough civilization in Europe that you'd instead be waiting in food lines begging the government for a crumb of food, Threads style.
>>
>>541486938
You will still have a fully functioning government and most of the population alive which is already miles better than US. I imagine people will live quite normally since the infrastructure remains completely intact.
>>
>>541487270
which is why it's not plausible for the fallout universe since there'd be expeditionary forces sonstantly shipping over from europe to check out irradiated mutts.
more plausible for europe to also be glassed since it's either perceived as american ally or got itself on china's bad side in one way or another during the resource war years

I finished porting the dragonclaw gauntlet. I spent a long time adjusting the positioning and shape of the mesh so everything was positioned properly and to minimize clipping while still matching the hand placement of the vanilla deathclaw gauntlet. I also included the breathing mask, as a special Big Guy Bonus™. you can craft them both at the chemistry station, under utility. I didn't add any perk requirements to their recipes so anyone could craft them, given you have the components.

since the gauntlet can't be modded, I set its damage to 35 and added the melee bleed effect to it. this is 1.4x the damage of the standard deathclaw gauntlet, whereas a modded deathclaw gauntlet has 31.25 damage with a 25% chance to disarm. additionally, given how much larger this gauntlet is, I bumped the reach from 0.8 to 0.9. I feel like these changes make it an alternative to the vanilla deathclaw gauntlet without completely overshadowing it.

I was going to include the duster, too, but weight painting is incredibly tedious and time consuming, even to people who have more experience doing it, and the outfit looks ridiculous without it any time you move around. I hate cloth bones so much, it's unreal. as usual with ports, don't upload it to nexus, it's against their rules and you'll risk getting banned. have fun.

Hi, I've just finished setting up TTW for the first time. During the intro quest Dad has the pink missing texture face. I understand that Archive Invalidation usually solves that and that it is automatic by default with MO2. Also, I haven't installed any body replacers or custom races. Any clues on how can I fix it?
>>
>>541524451
Try turning the invalidation off and back on manually. I use NMM for that but maybe mo2 has the option too? A tick or something

I've tried but no luck so far. Many NPCs also have pink head syndrome. MO2 supposedly updates it automatically but I wonder if something's not working with that

Fallout 4 has terrible writing, art direction, quests, etc.
But it's Bethesda's peak at actually being a video game
Having your fingers on WASD+mouse is much more enjoyable in it than in Fallout 3 or New Vegas

>>
>>541595414
Because I got it for "free", and it was an enjoyable enough experience once I got out of the first like 5 questlines and I got more than just pipe shit to use.
A lot of the "fun" definitely comes from endgame where you just make batshit broken builds and oneshot everything, though.
>>

>A lot of the "fun" definitely comes from endgame where you just make batshit broken builds and oneshot everything, though.
There is a certain other MMO title that falls into this category, but it's free, has better gameplay, more frequent updates, and is far less greedy. What I'm getting at is that the ideas behind Fallout 76 may be good, but the implementation is simply awful. I love building things, but there's literally no reason to play Fallout 76 for that when Fallout 4 is right there and you don't have to pay $10 for a new table. Social stuff? For god's sake Fallout 76 doesn't even have a chat. Meanwhile you have something like Rust where you can draw dicks all over the neighbour's house. Fallout 76 tries to be a bunch of different things and does everything poorly. The only value it has is being Fallout, and even that is gradually disappearing because everything is being ported to NV and F4.

it's a basic top-down dungeon crawler but I'm enjoying it. it doesn't take itself seriously and some of the dialogue options so far were surprisingly crude, which is a refreshing change. you can tell they were having fun designing everything from a 16-year old's perspective of "you know what would be cool? let's add it to the game." it's a very "hardcore" early 2000's kind of game.

yeah, I downloaded PCSX2 last week to play through Ratchet & Clank again, then decided to download some games I missed out on as a teenager. I figured Fallout BoS would be a good next choice.

Fallout is a series that is anti capitalist and very much correlates to the real world. The phenomenon described in the TV show (the ruling class prioritizing profit over people or sustainability) is just capitalism. You cannot manage or control capitalism as it is not sustainable by nature, in order for capitalism to work it must continue to grow indefinitely until it eventually cannot. The government in Fallout tried, but as you know it failed. It will fail in real life too.

I'm just putting this out there for the record that I saw an ad in the back of a DC comic the other day that was advertising their set of cheesecake swimsuit covers for this year, so. It's not like this kinda thing is totally gone, is all I'm saying. And there's games with big tits and skimpy outfits, it's just the big name ones trying to maximize appeal that sand off those edges. I'm not saying this to say you're wrong, I'm trying to present a bit more optimism, is all.

Does anyone know how to get rid this black rectangle when firing a gun?
I'm not sure it's vanilla or modded behavior when used in conjunction with ENB because it's 3 years old modlist, and I've just returned recently.
>>
>>541635828
does it disappear when you turn off enb?
does it appear for other guns?
>>
>>541636038
I'm such an idiot not testing out things before asking.
It only happens to specific modded weapons like in the picture, ENB or no ENB. Can this be fixed as simple as record edit?

not too familiar with how modded weapons are set up i'm afraid but i would check the mod pages for the affected ones first in case someone else has had the same issue. then i'd probably try and compare it with something that doesn't have the issue, looks like the modded ones have some extra particle effect that's not rendering right for you

The new content that's coming is really trying to be New Vegas. Some of it plays well but most of it feels forced. The lady who calls you in a distress signal sucks at acting and makes it obvious that she is working with the raiders way before you have a real conversation, then her boss says that she is "highly skilled" at subversion. Makes me think the writers are writing for 4th grade reading level fags.

doing the vault 81 quest now. I knew there was something to do in this vault and I'm enjoying just exploring this part.

I've considered doing more quests without enabling the quest marker.

>lady who calls you in a distress signal sucks at acting and makes it obvious that she is working with the raiders
Worst part is you can't immediately call her out and the dialogue option that is there that acknowledges her behavior isn't direct enough to do anything. Getting knocked out as a result of her obvious trap doesn't feel good.
>>
>>541656394
is it your first playthrough?
>>
>>541658127
no I first pirated this game when it came out, played it a bunch, but didn't do much of the side content.
Couple of years after I tried again, didn't really enjoy myself as much.
I bought a gaming laptop that came with a code for the GOTY edition for free, spent years not playing until this year when I decided I wanted to do some sniping and I recalled this game being pretty good for it.

I'm now also doing all of the side content I can find. I knew Curie was in Vault 81 from other people talking about her, but I never went and got her myself. She's currently replaced Nick because I want to do her personal quest.
>>
>>541658393
very nice. it's a fun game when you give it a chance and get a setup you like. i always look forward to playing through it again, pretty much yearly at this point

They developed new parks that turn your bow into an AOE on hit weapon that causes massive damage and can overpenetrate enemies so you can line up two for one kills, even three for one, or more. It applies to throwing weapons too so you can mass poison a whole bunch at once without breaking stealth, and you can actually sneak in combat now.
