If you bust open a first floor wall, the walls above it will fall due to the loss of support from the bottom wall, and because you can only do one size of damage to that wall, it all ends up falling down. What they'd need to do is decrease the size of damage you can do to a given wall to make it feel more "realistic". However, that would require them to go back and granularize ALL structural damage in the game, and that would be a very large technical undertaking. Probably something worthwhile for the next Battlefield game in 2-3 years, but probably not for the current one. In the meantime, the hammer might get a usage limit before breaking or do less structural damage per strike, or even get class-locked and/or made a gadget, but there's only so much that can be done as the game is now.
