There's no "she said" "she replied" etc., just alternating dialogue with no tag indicating who's speaking at all. So you have conversations like"This cake tastes very good.""I agree, it does.""Yes that was a good cake."Who said any of that? No fucking idea. Not all of the dialogue is like that of course, so context can show who's speaking in a lot of situations, but in English writing it doesn't work. Japanese has a lot more speech idiosyncrasies it can use to differentiate between characters (also they tend to use a person's name often when speaking to them) so they don't use dialogue tags like English a lot of the time, so it works there. I feel like a translation has to take this into account if a game is written in this way. As a comparison, many years ago I read Fate Stay/night, the original unvoiced version, which is the same way. But in that it was normal to have whichever character was speaking have their sprite change when they spoke, so it was always easy to tell.
