I don't know if it's related to layering or not but I literally can not see most mobs 10 feet away from me in some areas and they just suddenly pop into existence. It's honestly pretty absurd and hard to deal with since mobs are in immediate aggro range when they appear if they aren't green/gray.

They are not synonymous. Developers resort to homogenization when they are either incapable of doing anything else or when they have painted themselves into a corner by for example, having way too many classes and specs in the game to realistically allow every one to have a unique playstyle and identity. There is no reason why you can't have every class retain unique capabilities while simultaneously striving to make their bottom line numerical performance comparable. Throwing up your hands and saying that balance is pointless leads to the situation where there is constant screeching about unfairness that poisons the playerbase, just look at how any discussion of turtle wow is 95% people crying about shamans and paladins.
