I feel like the game has a capacity for strategy but I can’t tell if it’s meant to be near one hitapaloozas or just the result of people not upgrading their shit/using level one units and they get bulkier as you go.

It's less about stacking defense and HP and more about being able to out-heal incoming damage, I'd say; which lends itself well to strategy since you have to pick the right times to heal, when to attack a vital enemy, or when to just use a movement trick to avoid (or even redirect) damage entirely. And that's not to mention things like mind games, anticipating the opponent's moves, or specific weapon builds that give an edge...Things really do get a lot more tactical once you're dealing with people who know how to both fight and trick you convincingly.

Not putting Lucina in was a retarded idea though, she was the face of advertising for Awakening, and she's infinitely more important than Olivia, who cucked Severa or Inigo who were top 3 child characters with Owain, but Olivia's dancer gimmick was a lot more interesting than just another generic sword infantry. Another thing that sucked was that Hyrule Warriors got an entire free DLC campaign from the villains' POV and made the villains playable which was awesome, but I'm guessing they didn't do it for FE because the game didn't sell as well and also Gharnef, Validar, and Iago were complete copy paste jobs besides their stats, so the one and only tome moveset would have went from 3 to 6. They should have bit the bullet and made a second moveset, and also Nowi should have made it in so Dragonstones had a second character.
