I added the ability to "place odds", something requested by multiple craps players who found my game. In the Game of Craps, this is technically the lowest house edge best you can make, because it pays "true odds" or the payout exactly matches the probability of the number rolling.

In this clip, I place a 10$ odds bet. This pays me 20$, because the point is 4. There are 3 ways to roll a 4, and 6 ways to roll a 7, or "true" odds a 6/3 = 2/1. So there is no "house edge" at all.

Of course this probably means NOTHING to any of you, but it does give me some more design space for chips, which is nice.

I finally decided how my item upgrade / rarity / quality system is going to work. It just had to click. A lot of theorycrafting later, I am content with what I got in this department. Back to worldbuilding, currently doing research on hinduism, then shintoizm will be left. Already got 90% of "ice biom" bestiary written down (about 200 creatures). Yesterday I written down all initial routes for beginner/starting points for each character type/class/profession with ability to move/change it with it making sense narratively. Sometimes it's so hard to have a good idea, you are circling around these creative thoughts but there is always something lacking till boom, you figure it out. One day I will write code again.

All of that is just gambling nerd. All you need to know is
>10$ pass or field line
>Bet 25$ on all the numbers (4,5,6 etc.)
>Pray a 7 doesn't roll
Which is what I tell you in my new "new player" tutorial, which I hope helps new players. You don't need most of the bets to win, just betting the field over and over and getting lucky is a viable strategy, at least at the start of the game.

It's a good question, and one I've thought about.

Part of what made me want to make the game is the channel "Color Up", which demos a bunch of different craps "strategies". Obviously none of them "work" because the game is constructed so there's no way to ever eliminate the house edge.
So the goal of my game is to tap into the fantasy of utilizing a craps betting strategy, alongside with roguelike elements to make an experience like gambling, but with no money risked.

Another point is just Balatro, the other obvious inspiration. It's clearly successful, so demand is (or was) there. I'd also argue Balatro removes the most fun parts of poker (Socializing, bluffing, real money) and somehow still "finds the fun" so I think it should be possible with craps.

I both understand that but also... am very turned off by this. I mean, it's uninspired and... "cheap" to go after something that just recently got successful without having passion, unhealthy obsession or love for it. It's weird, it's autistic but it's something I understand and deeply respect.

If it's about money/looking for success despite not "feeling it", I understand from logical point of view.

Balatro felt to me like all other gambling games and didn't capture my interest for a minute. I realized it had good game feel though. That's all I saw to it.

>I mean, it's uninspired and... "cheap" to go after something that just recently got successful without having passion, unhealthy obsession or love for it. It's weird,
nta but you have to understand that people who buy games don't give a single shit how much of an unhealthy obsession you had while making your game, how hard you worked, how much you wanted it. They only care that it's good. Marmo had an unhealthy obsession with his game and look how that turned out. Plus I think it's possible to look at what works and make something that you hope will emulate it, without being a soulless passionless robot.

>Balatro felt to me like all other gambling games and didn't capture my interest for a minute. I realized it had good game feel though. That's all I saw to it.
Firstly it's not a gambling game it just superficially looks like poker, you literally can't gamble or buy microtransactions or lootboxes, there are better targets for scorn of the 'gambling game'. Secondly your opinion isn't worth a whole lot next to Overwhelmingly Positive (89,929)

Jargon dev here. My game is also heavily inspired by Balatro and other roguelike deckbuilders. For me it's less about copying something popular and more about drawing inspiration from something I really like. Balatro is one of my favorite games, and I love Scrabble and do word puzzles like the crossword and Wordle every day. 6 Ways to 7 or my game Jargon would be soulless if they were just clones of Balatro or some other game but I think both games take aspects of that formula and go into a new direction with it. I am passionate about my game, I work on it every day and I find it fun to play, otherwise I wouldn't be doing this at all, and I'm sure 6to7bro feels the same way

that is true but it's also true they had battles with 10,000 plus pairs of gladiators in the late republic early empire thoughever, many did meet their ends on the amphitheater's sands

each round is a defeat, not a kill. at the end of the round, the editore decides whether to spare the loser's life or kill him with a thumbs up/thumbs down. (no one knows which they actually used so i'm just going with the standard accepted/hollywood version. would change to thumbs up = kill if another romaboo anon has proof)

Question is what do you care about. If you have money to live your life, it's not about money. Money can be nice bonus but you are in for something else entirely. Would you play a bad game? If you make a game for yourself, shouldn't you strive to make it good anon?

I don't care about public opinion. I saw many games I wouldn't touch with a 10 ft pole with success. If someone enjoys it, who am I to take it away from them? I don't know why you are trying to defend the game. It's literally poker anon. Sure, it's gambling simulator, not gambling with real money. Sure it does change everything from gameplay point of view. I like it's game feel and idea behind seeds, with someone being able to have same "RNG" as you and compete based on that. Also pixel art.

Today I mostly fixed bugs, such as a bully failing to go back to patrolling after eliminating its current target. Also gave it a raycast so it can check to see if it has a clear shot before throwing a snowball so you can't just hide behind an obstacle forever.

Also added a threat table and aggro switching, so if you enter the bully's aggro radius it will give you 1 point of threat, if you hit him with a snowball he'll give you 2 points and switch to you as the target with the highest threat.

And there's some more random dialog they'll say as they're patrolling or trying to get you. They say very hurtful words.

Your whole point seems to be that you don't like it therefore it's bad. You seem to be incapable of seeing the merit in games that you don't personally like.

AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

I know ideas are supposed to be ten-a-penny and it's all in the execution, but christ I wish I could think of something that's somewhat original and compelling.
>minecraft
>narbacular drop (portal precursor)
>spelunky
All my ideas are in the form "<great 2D indie game> in 3D" or "it's a bit like <classic late 90s PC game>".

(I suppose strictly speaking it doesn't need to completely original, it just needs to be something that hasn't yet been done well and become popular. Minecraft was a bit of a ripoff of Infiniminer. Canabalt wasn't the first endless runner but it was the first one everyone knew about.)

I'm watching a video on americans getting 150k degrees and I'm thinking gamedev is one of the few legit non scam ways to make a lot of life changing money.

It still is a lottery, but the chances of winning big is like 10% per year, which is like realistic chances compared to gambling and crypto.

The reality is that we're fucked and all markets are fucked.
Gamedev is also fucked, but because is so dificult it actually has an automatic filter to like 99% of the population and there's still a bigger demand for games than any other type of art.

Gamedev is only a lottery if you're counting on accidentally making a good game. If you know how to make a good game on purpose you will literally always succeed in gamedev.

This is the pit so many /v/tards fall into. They think they have what it takes to make a game just because they've wasted thousands of hours of their lives playing them. It doesn't help that most of them are autistic as well, so their lack of empathy makes them believe that they're the only person who players games as much as they do and notices the things they notice. They think they're special when in reality they're just like everyone else.

400 winners from 10k participants is 1 in 25 chance of making it.
It means that in 10 tries, you're like 1 in 3.3 chances of making it.

>>
>>542309087

Lmao. If people were half as autistic and cared about medium as me. "They're just like everyone else". That's what you keep telling yourself to sleep well with being mediocre NPC with same interests, same favorite titles as everyone else, without any original idea. But at least you can project it to others not to feel miserable anon, right?

Only hours I wasted in my life was playing CS 1.6 and League. It was doing more of the same. At least in CS 1.6 I could win something, make my own clan, servers, mods, site and learn something. Rest of games I decided to play stay with me, were great rides and lessons alike. From Jeremy Soule's soundtrack in first HP games, through old korean MMORPGs, fantastic cRPGs like Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, Planetscape Torment, RTS with RPG elements like Warcraft III, Age of Mythology, Empire Earth ,turn based RPGs like Heroes II, III, IV, Age of Wonders, Etherlords, Disciples...

Not to mention all NES, GBA, N64 titles. But yeah, "same as everyone else". Underestimating autism and passion that people are capable of having will be your undoing anon. Keep thinking your slop that you thought of copying and many did, will make it while downplaying other anons

Don’t limit your market appeal broadly

found a potential solution to my problem by making movement set velocity directly instead of adding to movement input, needs a few further workarounds to other problems this causes though

For some reason I decided to make an RPG, but how are you supposed to market an RPG to the kiddies on tiktok, as a nobody?

Free million dollar game idea: spiritual sequel to Riviera: the Promised Land. It's an excellent babby's first JRPG with a lot of untapped potential.

What problem were you having?

30 - 60 second lore videos. Copy fear + hunger.
>>
>>542323996
How many times do we have to tell you marketing is not the problem? Just make a good game.
>>
>>542282428
This is why you need to develop a good game look early. nobody wants to see programmer graphics progress, especially not gamers.
The only way to measure possible success is barebones gameplay with good graphics and see how normies like it.

Well all the NPCs/enemies are going to have custom portraits, so hopefully that counts.

>>542324580
Actually that is a pretty good idea, it at least gives me an excuse to dump all the background lore I have. Thanks DUDE.

well then i have no problems :)))

>>
>>542324820
No, the way to measure potential success is through gameplay prototypes. If you need feedback link your demo and I'll tell you if it has potential.
>>
>>542324820
just make cutscenes first
it's easier to test the potential of your game by posting cutscenes than it is to actually develop the systems and record gameplay clips
this is the shortcut to market feedback

My technique is just, like... put shadows where they belong. Seriously though, I do it based on the material. Just kind of look at different surfaces (metal, fur, rock, cloth, plastic) and see how shadows form on them and how they fold (or do not). Do not take my advice too seriously, though, as I am only a hobbyist as far as art goes, and my pixel art is kind of... not great.

i kind of tried that but i think ppl would get confused in which part of the menu they are in without the transition (since the ui containers practically look the same) - with the transitions you get a feel there's a change on the menu

i do think it is worth the try tho, thanks anon
>>
>>542326301
Anon, making even a single good game is a herculean task. Most devs never achieve it.
