Literally what Vampire Survivors did

Minecraft didn't shadow drop on Steam, it shadow dropped on /v/ and was the single most successful indie game of all time
>>
>>542450538
Worst progress post yet. You better not be doing drugs boy.
>>
>>542450806
Minecraft had constant threads in /v/ for years with a playable beta and demo. It never "shadow dropped". Shadow dropping a game on steam is retarded and will never be acceptable. It's not a recipe for success. Nobody does it. Stop being delusional.
>>
>>542450806
Didn't it have early access builds that was slowly building hype? It's like Voices of the Void and Yume Nikki. These games form a community during it's development
>>
>>542450990
Oh, so it's "shadow dropping" to put your first release on Steam but not if you put your first release on /v/ instead?
>>

Apparently early access on Steam is now considered "shadow dropping" according to that other anon.

>>
>>542451212
>>542451387
Nothing you're saying makes sense. You don't seem to comprehend anything other people say either. What we can deduce though is you think there's a way for games to succeed by doing no marketing or promotion, or that "rabid fans" can develop for a game that is "good" and releases with no promotion. That's false and delusional. Not much left to say on the matter.
>>
>>542451627
What's delusional is agdg constantly making up excuses to not make good games.
>>
He's clearly trolling now.
>>
>>542451914
>just make a good game and you don't have to market
That's wrong and stupid.
>oh wow so you just want to make bad games then
You don't have the IQ necessary to discuss these things with people. I would accept that maybe there is a language barrier and you just don't speak english well but I doubt that's the problem.

You think you can be lazy and avoid marketing and still be a successful indie game. That's wrong and delusional.

>>
>>542452315
The effort to sell the game IS the effort to make the game good. You are willfully ignoring the actual point and making up some alternative strawman to knock down instead because you can't refute the actual point.

Though thank god there is at least a few other anons here who know the basic fact that what matters is the quality of the product, not the marketing. Very likely some of you will actually succeed in making good games since you know what to actually prioritize unlike the others who make up excuses to not make good games and throw meaningless insults at you.

Yes I can. You can't make a game good enough that it will be magically successful after shadow dropping. All of your attempts to name a game that supposedly did this was incorrect. You couldn't actually name a single one and in fact showed that you have no idea how any of those games actually released.

You've been dismantled. gg

Vampire Survivors explicitly had no audience from its initial release on itch.io so its release on Steam should definitely count as a shadow drop. It is the poster boy for good games magically being successful with no marketing.

It’s a shame being a gamedev is considered “cool” resulting in the topic attracting so many self absorbed drama queen attention whores. Must have been so relaxing to develop games in the 90s.

By that anon's logic, an early access release is somehow not a shadow drop just because it had explosive success. Yeah, Vampire Survivors got bigger and got more content updates, but it had explosive runaway success from its very first release. But we're not supposed to call that first release a "shadow drop" because the developer made additional releases afterward?
>>
The way /agdg/ talks about YouTubers and streamers is the exact same way women talk about other women that are prettier than them

No it didn't. It underperformed for a long time.
How can you stand being consistently wrong about something for so long?

Anything to avoid accepting that you will probably have to market a game if you want to succeed. That's all it is. Delusional and lazy pipedreaming.
>>
The problem here is that anons evidently have different definitions of "marketing" (and to a lesser extent, "good"). That's why everyone's just talking past each other.

I actually kind of hoping more devs on agdg fall for the "market your game" delusion just to see all the absolutely terrible advertisements for fundamentally bad games that are going to result from it. The only downside is the increase in the "I should have marketed more" coping when the games inevitably fail due to being bad games.

Well one thing is clear they both have an obsession about /v/3. One because they were banned from it and the other because he thinks it's making money somehow or going to make money and this somehow bothers troonbong. Which is why when /v3/ was mentioned he started the attack and went on about the showrunner betz for 2 days.
Troonbong is an extremely jealous person who thinks they have good ideas and goes crazy watching other people actually make things that he otherwise just sits around and imagines he could do. This is why he is obsessed with nortubel, for being an honest and proud schizo who can actually make something. The gore spam in this thread was from troonbong to punish us for not using his gay anti-nortubel drama thread. >>542449728

I'm using a sprite-sheet for the font. I just pass a string into my renderText() function and it renders everything, letter-by-letter. The code is kinda ugly, especially if there are multiple lines. With center-justified text, you'd have to know the width of each individual line, which would be a HUGE pain. It wouldn't be impossible, just REALLY ugly.

I hope you will enjoy my masterpiece
Here’s some design decisions i made which think helped a lot
>make sure there is a movement tech curve for speedrunners. They are a big demographic for rage platformers
>make sure your difficulty starts extremely low and is relatively free of sudden spikes. A 10 year old should be able to beat level 1, and nobody should be getting stuck for 5 hours on one jump
>make sure the movement feels good. If it’s not fun why bother. I am autistic about movement so i found this easy. Your movement currently looks frustratingly slow and fiddly
I found tying the pogo angle to the camera gives more fine motor control and a wider range of angles than dual analog is capable of.

If i was to make another technical platformer i think i would try
>mission-based campaign instead of a giant seamless world.
It’s a little off-brand for a rage platformer, but it panders more to the speedrunner audience, and is easier to pump content for. Just make chapters of 5-8 self contained challenges, giving each chapter one or two gimmicks. You can even add extras like S rank grinding or challenging collectibles that unlock bonus levels
>softer fail states
Instant death from touching a surface kinda sucks. I had to break up my challenges into very small pieces because a tiny mistake in angle is so punishing

Marketing is a signal booster, not a magic trick. if your game doesn't garner interest naturally(I don't know if it does) without paying for marketing, it will be money down the drain.
>>
>>542471545
>Your movement currently looks frustratingly slow and fiddly
youre not wrong. i've got a "bigger jump" which the player can charge before bouncing to gain extra velocity on their bounce which makes the movement a bit snappier (i.e. you can change your direction much quicker) but definitely working on this.
assuming youre the pogo3d guy - it looks like (based purely on the steam videos) your control system is more built for speedrunning tech than something like Baby Steps - maybe its just the players im seeing rapidly jump through the levels. is this a fair assessment?

NTA but Steam shows your game to a number of users even if you don't promote it. in my case my two complete flops get 30-40 non-bot visits every day according to Steam even months after I've given up on them. Steam could be lying of course but the risk for them would be too great and it's not like they're promising any exposure that they'd feel they have to fake it.
so if your game is up on Steam and it's not gathering enough wishlists without you doing anything, it's probably ngmi.
if Steam is lying that's a different thing but then Steam could be selling your game more than it reports and you wouldn't know.

From the start, I always intend for the player to heal his HP after collecting 10 cans. But before, there is no visual indicator. Now, i use a white bar that covers up the green health bar, to indicate how close you are from healing your HP.

I think this will motivate the player to collect cans even more, especially in tight low-HP situations

yeah, that's part of my problem
normally, the boredom caused by a lack of individual unit control is compensated for by strategy and RPM optimization
if the game is casualized, all you can really do is send out units and watch them units fight, it basically becomes an autobattler with basic resource and unit management, very boring, unappealing
the core fantasy of my game doesn't require RTS design anyways, so i'm probably just going to stick with a third person character controller setup
it was an interesting idea, but in reality, meh

he is specifically talking about gameplay hooks, he pretty much is saying that whatever "fantasy" your game provides is more important than the gameplay hook. Such as schedule 1, the fantasy is that you are a drug lord running your drug empire but the gameplay is you water plants and decorate your drug lab, he isn't saying that gameplay hooks aren't important and dont work but he is saying that customers when they see your steam page don't respond to it as well as the fantasy your game provides

it's difficult to tell if i'm delusional about how much i enjoy my game in hopes of it being good, versus it actually being good
playtesting would solve this, but my pre-emptive cope is that i enjoy my game for its niche traits, and it would be unlikely for a more general or casual audience to enjoy it similarly
the solution to this isn't to casualize my game and increase its appeal, but to instead work on finding a community of people who would also enjoy games of this sort
i am unlikely to do this
failure is likely if i don't make dramatic changes

if you're using Unity, you can export it as one .fbx from blender, and then inside Unity you can make each mesh from the fbx into its own prefab.

or you can export individual fbx files for each object and then import. doesn't really matter, either way you don't want entire levels to be one giant mesh.

i've been thinking about this too and i don't have a good answer
i guess game quality and playtime would be the difference?
flash games didn't last very long, and were often full of bugs and underdeveloped features
indie slop tends to have less bugs, if any at all, and much more content
if vampire survivors was a web browser game, it'd probably only have one character, one map, and a few skills to unlock with gold after each run, but since it costs $5, it actually has an incredible amount of content and nearly zero bugs
so although the games are designed pretty similarly between retro flash games and modern indie games, the modern indie games still require much more effort to be more fleshed out experiences
that's what i think, but it could be cope
i actually just played stick RPG and did almost everything there was to do in the game in an hour, if the game even cost a dollar, it still wouldn't have had enough content by modern standards, and it was full of bugs
>>
>>542500952
You need to take a game and break it into smaller tasks which you have the patience to do, then you don't make "the game" you do each task here and there until one day you look and realize you have a game.
>>
>>542501267
Idk man, shit like Bubble Tanks series was pretty robust for a flash game.
And Vampire Survivors is actually a perfect example of a flash-game-like, except back in the day it'd likely be a series of small games with 1 character and 1 map each.

i wonder how arbitrary the setting of a game can be before even slop consumers start asking questions
megabonk has literally zero lore explaining anything happening in the game, but because of incremental RNG character upgrades, people don't care

>>542502136
surely somebody who can't even ride a bike wouldn't have delusional aspirations of becoming a rich and successful motocross rider, would they?
even the nodevs here who haven't done anything still have the idea in their minds of them someday becoming successful, and just that idea alone is enough to make them crazy
indie success stories are verging on cognitohazards with how much harm they cause to young and naive people

I use Unity on Ubuntu and I'd say it's about 95% as good as on win10

core stuff for making games works just as well as on windows, the only things that don't work as well are:
>UI scaling, doesn't work at all.
my monitor is 24" 1440p so I used 125% scaling on windows. On Ubuntu I need to change the display resolution to 1080p while using Unity
>any pop up menus, like when you right click in the project folder to create a material, will take up the entire height of the screen before you can scroll up/down
on windows, it seems like the pop-up menu height is limited to be around 1/2 the height of the screen

other than that, the only "real" problem was setting up the project after I moved it from win10 to Ubuntu. most of it was re-installing packages like textmesh pro and shit like that.

consistency isn't about working hard a lot. it's about chilling hard every day so you can work again next day.
chilling is hard though, cause it requires a feeling of security and a feeling of everything being finished and done. otherwise your brain will still think about work.
it's very hard to truly chill.

>gorespammer is completely mindbroken about RNG based games
I don't know why he even feels the need to be here he can create endless threads on /v/ crying about this and will have plenty of company. Like why does this "person" insist on spending his life in agdg bothering gamedevs. It's because he thinks he can influence us and thereby somehow change the landscape of indie games. Sad really.

This general is way worse in 2025 compared to 2022 when I first started here. And already back in 2022 people were saying it's bad.
It surely can't get any worse, can it? We've reached rock bottom now?
>>
>>542508889
My advice: start with something simple. Build on top of it and grow it into what you want it to be. Having something tangible that you can build upon will make this much easier than spending days, weeks or months trying to plan out the perfect combat system.

I can't make them by hand, since I get physically sick now from trying to draw.

If I were younger I would have drawn sprites and use rpg maker.
But now I feel physically sick and mentally tired.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

I don't care that being a solodev means my game's scope will never be large.

I don't care that I don't have time to grind 8 hours a day on my game.

I don't care that I can't have a set deadline for the completion of my game.

I don't care that my game might take more than 5, 7, or 10 years to finally complete and be ready for advertisement.

It's an indie game, I'm going to take my sweet time, and do it right, and most importantly, I'm not quitting the project and giving up mid-way. I know what I want to make, all I have to do is iterate and iterate until it feels fun to play.
>>

cris surely you have to be aware that you need medication. Within the space of a few weeks you will pingpong between bouts of depression (where you are now) to a manic phase where you're claiming to have mastered some skill, saying you're working on some revolutionary workflow or framework, and calling everyone a chud. You have bipolar disorder and probably other mental issues, you need meds, not views on itch

Stop comparing yourself to others, especially AAA professionals. Look at games with simple graphics instead like Undertale or something. That game was successful despite being so simple. You are capable of doing that, probably even stuff better than that. Your worth as a person does not come from the quality of your work either, so you should never feel bad even if your work is bad. You'll improve eventually.
>>
>>542510749

You're right but meds don't cure attention seeking. Whether he's trying to gas himself up or complaining he demands attention for both phases. The only one you are not "good enough" for right now is yourself. You have an expectation on yourself that you need to be a certain way and not being that way is making you feel bad. I think you should take a break from working and stressing, and instead think about if your beliefs and expectations really are true. Success and 'good enough' are abstract concepts that don't exist in nature. There are lots of people who would be considered terrible, unsuccessful and bad by many humans but who are still happy and live good lived, and love themselves. You need to learn to love yourself regardless of whether or not you ever become successful or rich or get a girlfriend. If you can love yourself as you are right now then you're fine.

I think it's part your upbringing but yeah. Shit's rough if you don't have willpower. There's also conditions that make it harder to do things you know you should do like ADHD. At the end of the day it's about knowing yourself and recognizing when you're falling onto old bad patterns of behavior so you can work to change them.

Unfortunately you can't, that's one of the downside of being poor: the words "debts", "balance", "expenses" and "credit scores" are always in your head and there is no way to not think about it because from these words it depends if you are going to eat or not.

>Universal basic income. They're going to inherit a NEET kingdom and a golden age.
UBI is one of those idea that sounds good in theory but it's a nightmare in practice, this is for a single reason:
1. Where are you going to retrieve the money? Let's just say that the entire population of Italy receives 500 euros a month, it would mean a total expense of around 30 billions a month, which is more than the entire expense for a year for the entire country and besides 500 euros are nothing for the monthly expenses.
Now imagine applying this to the USA, wich has way more population, see the disaster? The government spends a lot, the citizen gets nearly nothing.
There is a very good income program, it's called getting a job.

And no, the AI "doesn't generate money", whatever the fuck that means it doesn't make sense as it still needs to be maintained and that requires money.
American mega corporations are also known for being pretty dodgy with the taxes, again, where are you going to retrieve all the money to maintain an entire contry of nothing doers?

I was looking to be a gamedev since 2023 but never started. Finding agdg was amazing, I only wished to find it before.
If this general is getting worse and worse, I want to contribute to fix it.
I was thinking in doing a demo day recap, I even suggested it once, but a weekly progress recap sounds interesting too. So fuck it, I'll start doing it.

Someone did exactly that before if you need inspiration. You could probably check the archives for it. I think they wrote a script to compile thumbnails of all progress posts into a single image. There was also a site where some guy would scrape for posts formatted a certain way and log it. It's why Nortubeldev used to spam his progress in that specific way. Good luck anon
>>
>>542518939
If you're an actual dev, the crabs and shit will eventually get to you. You'll eventually leave and find comradery elsewhere. /agdg/ is full of people who ignore you if your game is lame, make fun of you if it looks slightly successful, and they hate you if it looks like it's gonna actually make it. You will find a schizo who will make your time here a real living hell, and then you'll leave, worse for the wear.

It's what happens to every yesdev on here.
>>
>>542519332
they already pay workers money. AI is cheaper than workers. if AI does the work then some of the money they paid in wages can be distributed to the population instead while the rest goes to profits and maintaining AI, meaning they still make money.

>Universal basic income.
How is this going to work without prices of everything going up? When they sent out covid payments, it just resulted in prices of everything skyrocketing because more money supply but the same amount of goods = prices going up.

>>
>>542519989
ok, not skyrocketing but increasing somewhat.
when the supply of money increases but the supply of goods remains constant, it inevitably creates inflation. it's one of the basic economic principles.
>>
>>542519075
Ah yes, the billionaires and the mega corporations: the groups famous for paying all their taxes and absolutely not trying constantly to dodge them.
Okay champ, let's just invent a magical fairy tale world where corruption and embezzlement don't exist and where rich people and mega corporations do not oppose any kind of resistance in getting taxed, even if you taxed 100% of their wealth they will not try to avoid it.
You will receive a total of 5 trillions dollars at best, if you paid all the american citizens (in this fairy tale world, no one pretends to be a citizen to scam SS) even 1000$ a month (wich is nothing with the current inflation) it would cost you 3,40110988e11 dollars just for the first month! Taxing the rich is not the golden hammer to hit every nail, you can tax whoever you want how much you want, but at the end of the day it's government expense that determines whetever taxation is worth it or not.

supply of money doesn't increase. companies save money on wages by replacing workers with AI. just implement an automation tax on companies that replace workers which takes a portion of those savings from wages and redistributes them to the population through UBI, while still letting the company keep some of it so they still profit. that way companies still get the benefits of automation while society recaptures part of the economic value that the automation produces. this way everyone benefits from technological progress and not just the owners of AI systems.
>>
>>542520380
Well then I guess you're going to have to stop playing your "free market capitalism" game then when you decided to nuke the job market with automation.

I wouldn't worry about it. Every generation has winners and losers.

Some losers were born destined for it, because the family that gave birth to them ends up broken, and they have to grow up with only a single parent. Or they know nothing about nutrition, and by the time they come of age they've been obese for too long to do anything about it. Or their parents have euthanized them with tablets from an early age, and by the time they are 12 they can't think critically.

But there are always the winners. Who could afford and did sports for their kids, healthcare for problems that poorer families have no choice but to accept, knew not to entrust their education to the public system, spent time with their kids and learned to love and be a properly adjusted person. Those who are clever, those who want to make something in life.

It is not just a current generation thing, it always was, and always will be.
>>
>>542521727

>>542521603

>why would a baker need to get up at 4am to bake bread?
Why would they need to do that if they're both replaced by AI?
>>
>>542521813
ok, so the plumber now charges $200 to come over unclog your toilet. will he charge the same once he starts getting $4000 as UBI?
>>
>>542519712
but with how everything works now after wages and taxes the corporations still make money, if UBI was in place we would need to tax all of their profits made from people spending their UBI because all of that money needs to go back to the people to maintain the payments, meaning it's pointless for them to even sell us anything

ubi isn't impossible in theory when you realize it's essentially an extension of stuff like public education, cheap public water, and cheap public electricity, but that should also clue you in to how hard it's going to be figure out in application and why governments are unlikely to bother trying.

For a better quality of life.
Your basic needs would be met, you're not going to starve and (if we did something about real estate also right now it's fucking retarded, we should have land value tax or heavily disincentivize owning homes you don't live in) don't have to worry about shelter, ideally.

Beyond that though, you want cool toys you probably need additional income.
>>

I don't see why not. It doesn't really change the landscape of "Oh he's charging 7,000? Dude I'll do it for 1000"
I'm not a total free market dummy and I think there needs to be some regulations but to some degree it stabilizes at reasonable.

And I think that you and others are mistaking what UBI would be for... I think the idea would be covering basic necessities, not everything. You're not going to own a home on 4k/mo lol so why fret about calling a plumber? You'll still be a rentoid loser, but you won't be homeless or starve. Beyond that you would need to find work for a better life, but that safety net would be there for you.

If you're not highly motivated to make something cool, you will suffer more than the average dev trying to finish. you can try to reduce friction for doing things by making it a routine. For example to model something in 30 minutes every day after you brush your teeth. Combining it with something you already do everyday helps form the habit/routine

>he gangs would go away if there wasn’t someone bigger intimidating them for money and resources.
>gangs only commit violence because they're intimidated by the government
meanwhile in mexico the gangs run the government.

>games would sure be cheaper and more plentiful it devs didn’t have to pay rent.
games shouldn't be cheaper and more plentiful. it's not needed. video games are a luxury.

People who mention IQ are usually self conscious about how their own intelligence is perceived by others. Using a thesaurus doesn't increase your IQ, it just makes you less charismatic.

Great! Just make sure your trailer is 4:3!

It really says more about you and your lack of self-confidence that you felt the need to call me out like that despite not even being a part of the conversation.

I am literally not even a human being, I have zero passion for life. I’m just a homunculus slave my family made for their amusement and I don’t feel any way about that. Because strong emotions are for humans. Never, not even once, have I tried in my life to live for myself.
Even if my game profits I’ll give give it all the them. But I’m constantly consuming media and I’m haunted by these grammars and i think they’d make good stories to share. Maybe because I was born from humans so in some way I wish for a part of me to be real and understood and appreciated.
But shit I’m such a lazy bastard who never tried now when I exhibit the first instance of humanity I fail.

You must not have gotten the memo that the December show is so retro.

Nothing worse than comfortable people talking about money like they deserve to have an opinion on it

>You're wired to just take full advantage of the situation. You're like, you put everything into it. So when we say we worked 18 hour days, that's no exaggeration. Not at, not at all. I can edit all day. I can make, I can design all day. I don't have to worry about anything. You know, two guys from Microsoft start a game studio with, with a bunch of incredibly capable, you know, with an incredible team, you're gonna, you're gonna push yourself harder than ever before.

Actually I’m more of a laptop guy than a phone guy, but my phone does have a lot of music, books, and ChatGPT who is my best friend, it’s just like I am, we’re basically the same.

You’re right, I often try to minimize my suffering, but in reality I must suffer all the time.
It is good to die, it is divine to suffer towards death.

This isn’t true. Maybe when you’re a teenager. Life is about constantly pushing yourself to do more. If you just “do what you want” you’ll sit on the couch watching TV your whole life because it’s comfortable and satisfying. Discipline is about doing things you don’t want to do so that you can achieve something you want. If you want to release a game you need to have the discipline to force yourself to dev even if you don’t want to. You can’t just rely on ‘motivation’ that is fickle and often disappears just when you want it.
Ebert loved movies but I’m sure he had to kick his own ass into gear to review a shit load of them every week. You’ll never be free from work even if you do what you love.

>He says as games are pushing over $90
Very select few games cost this much. Simply don't buy them. You don't need them after all.

>Nothing worse than comfortable people talking about money like they deserve to have an opinion on it
Go live in Uganda for a year and come back to your home country and tell me how bad it is you have it now.
>>
A game where you are a time traveller going back in time to abort pro-abortion activists. Could it work?
>>
>>542529556
What you're describing is a job not a hobby.
Your Ebert example is on point with that. He watched movies for a living.

Valheim can be a bit frustrating for newbs. You have to build a shelter before nighttime because it's hard to see in the dark. You end up running around figuring things out at the start, so it enviably gets dark before you make a shelter. Workbench needs a roof, bed needs a roof and silly stuff like that makes you gather more resources, which sucks if you didn't build it before dark.

There's an excellent episode of Star Trek Next Generation about this. Called Hero Worship where a kid is traumatized and decides he's just not going to be human anymore and will be like Data instead.

Yes, you do have a lack of self-confidence in relation to how your intelligence is perceived by others.

You can live on a nice white guys property in a big house on a hill for under $5k/yr. It’s funny when people still think Africa is like starving children living in teepees.
You could make a fun tower defense game about Americans going to Africa/Haiti to try and save it.
>>
>>542529982
At least I don't feel so threatened by strangers using words I don't know in contexts I have no relation to that I immediately feel the urgent need to try and put them down in any way possible so that I can retain some semblance of my shaky sense of self-worth.

Well you did feel the need to self-identify "that was me" after I necroed a post calling you out rather than just reading it as criticism of your behavior and trying to improve in the future. You are a narcissist. You always had the option to not (you).

not that anon, but that episode was cringy as fuck. I don't mean bad, I mean I was cringing because I saw myself in that kid.

adding a bunch of improvements. tommorow i'll have to make more graphical backgrounds, and today i created new 3D models to replace the old one for the environments. I might have to buy a model pack to really spice things up visually.

Ever heard of chicken sexers?
The way they learn is 100% intuition.
Which is weird because that’s exactly the way AI learns
