I'm writing a spawn system for my ECS that makes sure everything spawns in-bounds on the map. From a design standpoint, is it better if I make my spawn system only process at the beginning of the level, or should I have it process with every tick, and have a component like C_Alive and if C_Alive is `false` on an entity it spawns it in.

I'm thinking with the latter I could have my levels dynamically spawn in characters. I'm new to this ECS thing though is that the right pattern or do you guys manage enemies/player spawns another way?

The Frydarian Tale update: I will be changing the design of Basileus Joseph Fygoon to be more like this concept art I generated.
This is because I believe there are enough games with strong heroic protagonists and I want to break the mold by making a more feminine male the hero.
There are also lots of strong males already in the game, so this change will make Basileus stand out even more.
As you can see I also added horns because while it technically goes against the lore, I think it makes his appearance look even more heroic and striking.
I am not yet sure if I will change the story in any way to reflect his changed design but be on the lookout for future updates on this.

something that really pisses me off about games with a lot of generic enemies of different factions is they aren't very different. these are the goto "cheap" techniques i've seen developers use to differentiate a faction:
>from a pool of shared classes/movesets, limit which ones can be used by this faction
>add specific typed weaknesses/resistances
>from a pool of shared special abilities, add one or two additional abilities to the faction's moveset
>faction is often paired with a reused unit type like dogs or giants
this stuff is all really easy with the code i already have or was planning on making anyway

here's the more "expensive" techniques that are often used. these come with a lot more overhead

>faction comes with some sort of special AI, like tracking enemies through sound
i want to do some of this of course, but it's expensive. doing less of this is important to keep the scope manageable

so i've been fiddling with an idea of how to make the same moveset feel different between different factions.
maybe it's just enough to weigh some of the AI RNG based on float attributes i assign to each faction.
i could make some enemies more likely to retreat, or less likely to block. something like that

I've laid out the first section of this map. I don't enjoy level design, so it's been quite a difficult task. I need to add more monster encounters now, but before that I want to finish re-implementing my missing bad guys. So I only learned Dreams existed in the past few months. I'm a 3d artist and use a bunch of 3d software on PC, and I can't believe what I'm seeing with the Dreams videos. This 4-year old program looks like it's from the future. I do plenty of rough 3d concept work for which Dreams would be a godsend. I can definitely understand the community's frustration with support being ended on something this amazing for who knows what reason. So what I'm trying to figure out is, whether it's technically possible to pick up Dreams now and use it as a completely offline tool, basically in perpetuity. I started looking into buying a used PS4, PS1VR, and physical copy of dreams, and it looks like you could do that for around $100-$150. That would be well worth it for the time this tool looks like it could save me compared to traditional 3d software. But that's only worth it to me if I can run it regardless of Sony's terrible decisions. Is this financially sound?

Without getting too into the details; all these enemies/monsters are hybridizations of homunculi mixing with human and environmentals *wills*. I think the former makes the most sense, but this is still up in the air.

I know when I import FBX's into Unity all the different objects stay as different objects (and maintain their hierarchy). The materials appear in Unity and I can recreate the material in-engine and just slot it in via the inspector. I don't think you need to bake all your textures into one big one (you're talking about an atlas, right?) but it would improve performance.

I know for characters I import all I have to do is just slot the material into the material slot in the inspector so it shouldn't be that much work. I don't do my environments in Blender though so I'm not super knowledgeable on the workflow.

No matter how wholesome your game is, nobody wants to hear squealing children, real or simulated. Not only is it annoying, but it's also bizarre for a videogame.
For the setting of this game I think you should go with Sim-like gibberish, maybe in a muffled tone like Kenny of South Park with all of the winter clothing on.
I say this because the graphics are low fidelity pixel art combined with a Gods eye view. Also using gibberish allows easy localization too since you have those speech texts above the heads.

This is wasteful, you have a minor bump out at the neck. This whole area should be flat unless there is a special detail that must stick out. The 8 tri chest with what looks like 4 tri neck hole are waste.

Both of these items are wasteful because if you flatten them it is imperceptible to the viewer of the final, textured model.
>Separated parts
I see the legs are separate meshes, do they have faces on the inside within the leg? That is, the top of the leg meshes inside the body should look hollow since you'll never reveal them.
The arms may as well be detached since you have removed the geometry that allows them to deform.
The head and neck should be separate with the inside faces removed as well, and the hands may as well be too.

The hand shape is a bit wasteful here, look at the shape. It is a square becoming more narrow, with a barely noticable change halfway. You could cut that middle separating point out and it would look the same.

Most of the waste here is from your adding small details in the geometry that don't pay off in the end, let the textures do that work.
For your next model you should try a more distinct silhouette since a character with remarkable features is actually quite a bit easier than making a 'plain' or 'real' character look good in low poly.
