Honestly, SatAM is an example of an unbuilt trope in regards to the resistance fighter Sonic premise. Like yeah, the show had Sonic running around with the Freedom Fighters doing guerrilla warfare against Robotnik's regime, but here's the interesting thing. The actual characterization of Sonic in SatAM wasn't even that different from game Sonic. He took situations seriously when they needed to be serious, he wasn't just cracking wise 24/7 or lusting after ladies like everyone remembers.The real problem is Archie completely poisoned the well. Everyone thinks SatAM was this heavy freedom fighter drama because Archie ran with that concept and turned it into something way more serious and melodramatic than the show ever was. People literally think SatAM is a romance drama when it had LESS romance drama than fucking Sonic X. That's how much Archie warped perception.So you've got this show that introduced the freedom fighter concept but kept Sonic's personality relatively intact and had a humorous, often whimsical and fantastical tone, and then it gets buried under years of comic book baggage to the point where people can't even remember what the actual show was like. The trope got built up in everyone's heads through Archie, Forces, and IDW instead of what SatAM actually did with it.And now? The idea of Sonic being a "freedom fighter" is considered retarded by most people here because of how Archie handled it, not because of what SatAM originally presented. The whole concept got so overcooked and taken too seriously that it became a joke. Total unbuilt trope had the foundation but never got to properly develop on its own terms before getting demolished by outside forces.

The way SATAM is the unbuilt trope is that Sonic's WAY PAST COOL attitude is a coping mechanism from having his life upended by Robotnik whereas Pontaff and Flynn crap ust has the Japanese Sonic, the confident and unaffected Sonic, making those same jabs and same braggadocius attitude despite never going through the horrific events so it comes off as grating.Also Robotnik is not as capable as later versions of Eggman where he struggles to maintain control of a city (I mean there is wreckage everywhere not cleaned up) from people who live in huts and do not have access to his level of tech aside from Nicole.

The japanese dialgoue is canon.You can tell because every game is written by a japanese writer and then localized by people who aren't writers. That's why there's so many odd little mistakes in the games leading up to 06. There is no real artistic intent in the english dialogue lines, they were (mostly) just translating it and embellishing it."Si that what Chaos Control is?" can't be a canon line. Shadow knows what Chaos Control is. He wouldn't speak like that. On top of that, the continuous games of that era completely ignore the english dialogue. In Heroes, Sonic says "Talk about Stubborn and Full of surprises!" this is a reference to a line from SA2. That line isn't in the english dub of SA2. It only survived into the heroes dub. This means Sonic Heroes regards the japanese version of SA2 to be canon.This obviously doesn't hold water for the 2010s games who have their script and animations tied to the english dialogue. Japanese Frontiers is almost incomprehensible in its forced attempt to keep all of the characters within Sonic Team's preferences. The japanese version of Shadow Generations does not translate back Shadow and Sonic's referential dialogue (A date to die for) because the japanese writer did not recognize the reference Ian was making because that reference was to the english version of SA2. So really, make of it what you will.
