Merit = whatever makes Gabe more moneyGood game = a game that can buy Gabe another yacht
What's the point of making games when it would take years upon years of hard work to reach the top 1% and even then, is a gamble that is not guaranteed to work.
The amount of FUD being posted in this thread about how hard it is to make even a little money, is astounding. It quickly makes me come to the conclusion that there is a coordinated, perhaps algorithmic component to the posts to greatly dissuade people from realizing the monopoly on mass media has ended.
Hi, I have an idea for a game and want to make all the assets from graphics to music but I need someone that could program it. If anyone wants to hear me out I can give a detailed description of the game.I have an idea for the visual style that I'm pretty sure has never been done before so I'm looking for people who are curious and intetested in doing something new.The game is at its core a mix between beat em ups, and semi-rpg games like Hard Times by Mdickie.Graphically my idea is to do something very similar to Asterix XXL and Driver 3 for GBAPic related is a character design. If anyone is interested I'm lerri00 on discord.

>>543154567it's really not a gamble it's pretty obvious what ideas would reach the top 1%, the problem is people are actually retarded and will do their best to ignore that 1% because they think it's safer to do another crafting game or another roguelike deckbuilderEveryone knows what the next minecraft or fortnite is

>>543154567If you do truly reach the top 1% of skill, you are guaranteed to make it. Maybe not every game you make will be a massive hit, but you will very easily be able to steadily pump out games that each yield revenue well above US median household income for your time spent.

Anyway lots of old 3D games use one stick for movement and camera. It’s called tank controls. Forward/back is movement, left/right is turn. Double flick back sometimes quick 180sThe camera often has additional treatment for specific room shapes and encounters. Auto-turning to frame scenes, enemy lockon, etc. but thats a lot of complexity with plenty of room for jank, on top of being widely disliked. most developers are happy to cut it out for the much cheaper and more expected twinstick style controls

>>543191231White flash doesn't make me feel uncomfortable, but what is it for, parrys? I think a screen wide effect for that is too much, maybe localize it to around the player or make it an arc pointed at the new projectile direction?>godotwasn't this game in unity? been awhile since I played it on DD
>>543191231why would anyone play this over hotline miami 2
>>543191231Your game has real visibility issues. Maybe some thicker outlines could help without having to revamp the entire artstyle. But yeah the light is a little too harsh even though it's grey. Maybe it's because it's so sudden, Maybe you want to make it a little transparent. I'd experiment a bit.
>>543192161are you retarded? it's an open arena, not a room by room one hit kill rush game
>>543182384I don't post about politics. I have changed my mind about many things, and I don't want a permanent record of things I believed in. If people want to attack you, they won't care about nuance or that you have changed your mind. I'm not American, but Mozilla's cofounder was ousted for donating to get prop 8 passed in 2008 (bans gay marriage). It passed with a majority voting for it in liberal California. A year later, Obama ran on a marriage should be between a man and a woman platform, but Brandon Eich was ousted in 2014 over this. Mainstream political views might be considered downright evil 10-20 years down the line, and you don't have the fame or significance to prevent someone from causing a headache if you make it. I prefer to express my dumb takes as anon. I don't publish my games under my real name, but it's fairly easy to get my personal info from the llc I use to publish them on steam.

>>543192372>Mainstream political views might be considered downright evil 10-20 years down the lineWell the pendulum is swinging hard to the right and the very paradigm of the post-war international liberal consensus might be ending within the next decade. Cancel culture I think is dead, at east the vulgar display of power and cultural hegemony that the left enjoyed in 2015 or so is over, back when they'd spend all day trawling though every post you ever made and then launch a campaign against you for the gay joke you made in 2007. In contrast for the right to cancel you, you have to be a complete ghoul by gleefully celebrating someone you disagree with getting shot in front of his family and a crowd of people. Leftoids are in full retreat and quickly becoming culturally irrelevant as the old words of power like fascist and racist don't work anymore.so I don't think we're going to return to 2015-style cancel culture. So you'll probably be alright unless you're just embarrassed about how cringe you used to be.

>>543113864Trying to convert the game's success into a youtube slop revenue stream as well was just the smart thing to do and if you had a game that made it, you'd probably at least consider it too. What he flubbed was the execution. He clearly got lucky but instead of showing the appropriate level of humility and memeing on himself, he instantly started trying to act like some cool dev guru. I made it through half of one of his videos (before I even knew who he was coz I watch a lot of dev slop on youtube) and stopped it coz he sounds like a fucking moron. It makes me wonder if he was at least smart with his money. It might be a good long while before he gets another big hit of income like from his first game, if at all.Even if you're a hobby Chad, that's something you should plan for just in case you have money suddenly dumped in your lap. If even just ONE of my games is a moderate success, a good chunk of the money will be going straight on our mortgage.

>>543209529i just don't understand why ai sucks so bad at generating 'lowpoly' models. it's like it half understands the style but it adds these big sweeping curves.
>>543208902
>>543210295It's because it's done after the fact. Most AI uses many different algorithms and "AI" and combine it into one. Image part segmentation and so on.The most important reason for the high poly models is because the AI starts out with some latent space SDF modelling then when it creates a concrete model it uses techniques similar to marching cubes finding the boundary of where that "space" is. In doing so it creates a huge initial model consisting of 10000000s of vertices which the model can mold.Afterwards optimizations and decimation of the surplus of superfluous vertices is done (which could be done by another AI algorithm too, but this is work in progress).

>>543225194>and anyone who succeeded in the past would do soWhat's funnier is that this isn't true. It hasn't ever been, not even in the best of times. Outside of a literal handful of exceptions like Jon Blow, if you succeeded in the past you're more likely to fail NOW even if you did everything right, simply because the market is rigged so much against you now.
my game will succeed in spite of steam's algorithms
>>543225194>The problem is every game dev is entrenched in the boomer "Fuck you! I got mine!" mindset and they genuinely believe anyone who fails must have failed purely do to not trying hard enough and anyone who succeeded in the past would do so today so nothing will be done.how do you know its not true though? people make some absolute trash, and are incredibly deluded about how good their trash is
>>543225030captains of industry
>>543225194>they genuinely believe anyone who fails must have failed purely do to not trying hard enoughWhat does "trying hard enough" have to do with anything. Nobody talks like that. If you fail, your game wasn't a good concept, it didn't have an audience, you didn't market it, etc. etc. Nobody says boomer things about trying hard or bootstrapping here. Blaming steam for not finding a way to get you guaranteed sales with their storefront algorithms makes no sense. Why should they be forced to wave your game in front of people who have already proven they don't want it. Because you "tried hard"?

you should learn about steam's algorithms, create a game that becomes successful, and use your success as a point of respect to convince valve to change their systemit's the only wayprove you're not a whiny nobody flopdev, make a successful game, earn respect, and then convince valve to increase discoverability of unique hidden gamesit's not even about helping these games make more money, it's just about making it easier for games with low revenue to be discoveredmaybe a throwaway "discover new games" page with a grid view of unique titles with decent review scores and low revenue would sufficei just dislike how hard it is to organically find cool games on steam that aren't grossing $100,000 a week
6 months after release, if your game is rated very positive or better but under 500 reviews, you should appear on the 'hidden gems' tab
I know this may be shocking but.. I.. I ENJOY gamedev

>>543224815Perhaps, I formed this opinion much earlier in life. I used to do volunteer mentoring programs teaching robotics to kids. I taught at both middle-class suburban schools as well as poorer and special needs schools. They quality of the kids at each was day and night. The primarily white and asian kids at the nicer schools were curious, well-behaved, learned quickly, and could quickly become active independent contributors to the project without their hands needing to be constantly held. The primarily brown and black kids at the less nice schools weren't even all that bad in terms of behavior, but they just learned so much more slowly, and never really got to the point where they would be able to do things on their own without being explicitly instructed on what to do.As a group that cries about browns, I had originally assumed /agdg/ was more like a nice suburban classroom, but in reality, this is a special needs class. NGMI nodev retards like >>543225194 cry about luck and nepotism, but the real luck and nepotism is simply being born to middle-class white or asian parents in a first world country, being encouraged to perform well in school, and staying active in extracurricular activities, many of which would've helped you develop gamedev-relevant skills since an early age.

>>543227682High review count metrics are protected from manipulation because the number of accounts required makes detection of manipulation both more expensive to the attacker and easier to detect. Since "hidden gems" would have a low review count it would be easy to manipulate the score discretely by using a low number of tailored reviews, so it would be cheaper to manipulate. Meanwhile on Valve's side statistical analysis methods to identify foul play would be under-performant due to the reduced amount of data available per entry inherent to the low review count, to justify manual moderation you'd need the page to generate a very large increase in revenue from hidden gems being discovered as the low cost of manipulation means the number of submissions in need of moderation would be much larger. Hiring a large number of people to review low submission count games would also simply not fit in Valve's profile of having a reduced workforce.
>>543227829>discovery of low performing games is already fineNo it is not. What makes you say this? Do you search for low performing games? I do. It's not easy to find them. How do you find them? What do you do to discover games with low review counts?Take the three games linked below. How would you discover these organically?https://store.steampowered.com/app/2900410/Early_Mellow/https://store.steampowered.com/app/3659990/hatenet/https://store.steampowered.com/app/1165750/PAGAN_Autogeny/I will hold the opinion that Steam would receive endless benefits from allowing games to be sorted on the store not only by genre/tags, but also by review count, release date, and review score. There is no argument against this. I say this from the perspective of a video game enthusiast, not a hopeful developer. I have absolute confidence in the performance of my games. I am not worried about making more money. I am worried about enjoyable experiences being hidden due to suboptimal discoverability systems. The fact that I need to use websites like vginsights.com to find new games should be telling. Steam's discoverability is shit for people with unique tastes.>>543228054You completely fail to understand the point. It is true that good games rightfully succeed, and bad games rightfully flop. This is intentional due to the design of Valve's promotion algorithms. The point is that after a bad game flops, it becomes excessively difficult to discover organically. This does not mean that it should receive algorithmic promotion on Steam, but instead, that the game search functionality should be improved to allow for players to filter for games not only through genre and tags, but also by review score, review count, and release date ranges. There are games that flopped that could still be enjoyed by niche communities. These games do not end up being discovered by these communities due to Steam's suboptimal search functionality.

>>543206515That's cute, gj.
>>543228648Sorry...

>>543228450>I will hold the opinion that Steam would receive endless benefits from allowing games to be sorted on the store not only by genre/tags, but also by review count, release date, and review scoreEndless benefits meaning "appease one person who likes the idea of finding buried flop games". Steam does what it knows is profitable. Everything you've been saying is irrelevant to gamedevs who actually want to make games that are played, we don't care what happens in the bottom of the landfill of flop games. >>543229680profitable does not mean good for the gaymer. I hope you are well versed enough in the games industry to know how this could be the case. but you're right, steam would not receive benefits that outweigh the opportunity cost of not doing so.it's hilarious that consumers always think storefronts fucking over their producers means they only ever have the consumer's interests at heart.
