The two main possibilities will be a perpetual offline version or just remaking the game from the ground up using as many assets as they can salvage as a proper VN with pre-determined puzzle battles or proper full game. The offline version would be the least effort. Nasu clearly had wanked artsy fartsy thoughts about how the ending was going to be a true finale to both the story and game, but that's out the window now with 2026 continuing on in some form. So the main question is how they want to preserve the game and story into the future whenever it ends, whether 2026, 2030, or whenever they pull the plug.

As far as gacha were concerned its story was well above par even before the sharp improvement and it basically pioneered the idea of seasonal events having an actual story with narrative continuity. Jeanne Alter's whole story arc through Part 1 in particular went over really well and made her into the most popular FGO-original character by far during the early years.But its popularity really took off around the London and America chapters (because that's where a lot of the production issues began to smooth out and quality improved) and then snowballed from there up to Solomon.More than the story not being the usual TM standard, the reason the first half of part 1 is so maligned is that the game was just much lower quality, had frequent long maintenances, issues with performance and stability and assets were generally poor quality. Most servants used the same generic animations (which clipped frequently) and the sprites looked a lot worse. Once the launch issues began to smooth out, quality standards improved and they set out to start updating servant sprites/animations the game naturally got more popular.
