I actually just rewatched the Ivanchuk crying vid where Daniel was his opponent and he was making the same sort of faces then in the time crunch at the end. But he reverted back to normal after the game. For the record I do think he was probably abusing stimulants of some sort. But now I don’t think it was an accidental OD.

He obviously had some neurotic tendencies but the one thing I noticed about him that really made me worried, going back years, was that he was one of those guys who felt they had to keep up the nice, wholesome persona he had built up. And I’m sure he was like that a lot of the time, but not ALL of the time. And those dudes always crack hard when they inevitably have to let their human flaws out. You could see it with his mouse slamming moments when the facade would break momentarily. The Kramnik stuff obviously exacerbated these issues severely, but the groundwork was there already. And the last VOD everyone is talking about—yeah I think he was on drugs for it but what I think what really hit him the hardest was the reaction to it, even before he died, it was being posted with people expressing concern. And they SHOULD have been expressing concern… but he might have seen it as people seeing through his veil, he’s not someone who has it all together, he doesn’t have everything under control at all times.

I was really affected when I heard the news but I wasn’t shocked. This really was a culmination of a life of self-imposed (well not entirely self-imposed) stress of trying to live up to an image of who you would like to be rather than simply being who you are. I’m sure of course many expectations were placed upon him as a child as well that he felt he needed to personify at all times, in his later years maybe not to become world champion but at least be the foremost chess educator. And honestly he did more than great at both, as a player and an educator, but he couldn’t step back and realize it.

As for Kramnik I think he is a total piece of shit now. I was able to rationalize his harsh lines of criticism with the understanding that he is someone who is regularly demonized and insulted, and he simply does not give a shit about it. Consistent 5 seconds time delay on every move is often an indication of online cheating. It's very obvious on recaptures and "only moves" when a normal player would just need a fraction of a second.

I guess nowadays there's also cheating software that can automatically set up the analysis board.

You don't need a second board. There are automatic board overlays that show you the 3 best moves via arrows and even tells you when to take some time or when to play a bad move.
