This really was a culmination of a life of self-imposed (well not entirely self-imposed) stress of trying to live up to an image of who you would like to be rather than simply being who you are. I’m sure of course many expectations were placed upon him as a child as well that he felt he needed to personify at all times, in his later years maybe not to become world champion but at least be the foremost chess educator. And honestly he did more than great at both, as a player and an educator, but he couldn’t step back and realize it.
