The Moose Is Loose Edition
Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

I don't remember if I replied pyrene but this is why I take unaging on shinu. I made a single player and just cranked out like 2 of the sorcerers and both were old

There are a bunch of other reasons like freeing up death gems early but this is mainly it, its essentially a bunch of stats and +4 reinvig while they are alive.
Maybe it isn't optimal but it really feels like shit spending 545 and 2 turns on some geriatric shrek wizard too old to even appreciate the hoards of cat girls

Kind of a generic slightly-better-humans without much of a gimmick or unique aesthetic. Fomoria has the cooler Irish fantasy/mythology. Vanheim has pretty similar units and is more exotic to me as an Anglo, and has magic I like more. I'd rather just play one of those instead.
That being said, I could do some doodles if you've got some ideas.

In LA, you need something cutting down on incoming damage since lances are crossbows are everywhere. So ethereal, fortitude and awe all work. You may need something else, I haven't tested it, but if you have one of those, then you could add one of the other two or fire shield, regen, vamp weaps or fear/dread.
It's going to be painful affording a double incarnate however unless you have some very convenient immobiles or titans to hold the blesses, since you do at least want magic, prod and 8 dominion.

yes. personally i prefer scales zemaitia because i dont want many different paths on my pretender and the paths that i do want dont have worthwhile blesses because zemaitia's mages and thugs can cast spells with the same effects.
so unless you have a rainbow pretender your bless effects become redundant pretty quick. and even with a rainbow hell bless you get great expansion but you dont scale well (the opposite if you have negative scales) and your research is slower.

Urban combat is a very complicated thing at both a tactical and strategic level and nobody is attempting to accurately replicate it these days unfortunately, likely due to that very complexity. Obviously in a world like the one of dominions there is minimal urban terrain compared to the current world so it makes sense that it doesn't need be be included, even though it would be nice. It is a shame that my barbarian raiders can't run through the streets murdering civilians and burning down houses while fighting the defenders with some sort of fun raid mechanic, but perhaps in the future it could be possible.

Are there any scales elf nations? It seems like all elf nations I've tried so far (MA Vanheim and Noog) demand blessings to suffer less attrition. I really just want some good stealthy non-sacred troops that aren't too ruinous in terms of expenses.

An idea: Dominions 6, or a mod or external program, implements a sort of mode, including online multiplayer, where a match goes like:

If Dominions was a physical board game that I was advertising in stores, I'd put "for 8-16 players" on the front of the box. I feel that's the ideal; it's enough nations for variety's sake and to avoid "rush the 8 point throne victory by turn 25" strats, and few enough that it doesn't devolve into 1 huge snowballing anon slogging to the win while the rest can't be bothered to drag out the game resisting him, let alone try to win.

Cataclysm is turn 89 and we're on turn 71. There are still six nations who could conceivably win (and you know who you aren't). It's twelve thrones to win and nobody has more than 4. I guess cataclysm will put an end to it but it feels pointless to keep tryharding long-ass late game turns when the winner is going to be chosen by horrors. If cataclysm wasn't so close I actually wouldn't mind, at least there'd be a real winner eventually.

good points. normally, multiplayer dominions games deactivate major story events to keep randomness in check, but cataclysm basically reintroduces the kind of randomness that majorly influences who wins. it is a known, major story event that to some degree can be planned and built for, but it is still very random and often has a lot of influence. i wonder if an alternative solution would be to have an alternative game setting to cataclysm, where gradually the number of throne points needed to win are reduced turn by turn

I don't know how old the devs are, but considering Dominions 1 was pre 9/11, safe to say our favorite swedes are minimum 50, if not already close to 70. We have to accept that this era of Dominions content is the best its gonna get. Either dementia, medical emergencies, or them selling the IP to the saudis/China will be the end of what we once knew.

From what I've seen Jotunheim is pretty scary, he's got at least one cap other than his own. Agartha was also boasting he's in a fantastic position a couple of threads back, and those globals support that.

spirit sight is niche, but can make it easier to invade the underground, and i guess deep seas. it can also work for casting darkness. it'd be better if it worked against the mirror images of units with the glamour ability (not glamour magic path, the ability, a bit confusing), or gave some bonus against illusions and phantasms, but alas, that would probably be imbalanced. especially after longdead were given spirit sight

true sight is worse but at least does not require a crosspath bless. it should help against unseen and invisible units, and patrolling them out. and against units that are displaced (-5 attack iirc) and some other glamour buffs. but annoyingly, it does not help against illusions and phantasms afaik

maybe if spirit sight was taken away from units like longdead and some other ones, spirit sight and true sight could be boosted. but that depends on what spirit sight and true sight means, for should longdead have spirit sight or not?

magic weapons i disagree with. it's expensive and incarnate, but on the right nations with the right units, it can help cover some important holes in the nation's options at certain timings. a nation with good access to varied evocation spam probably wouldn't care, just spam lightning bolts and fireballs and gifts from heaven and falling frost and other evocations against ethereal units. but a nation with poor or very narrow evocation spam options, like only a single type of elemental damage (exception is probably shock), and with a lack of options for dealing with ethereal, invulnerable or mistform units, such a nation can possibly benefit from it

Disagree with what? What I said wasn't an opinion, just an observation that I see it taken way less often. Yes you can argue that there are situations where you want them or whatever, you can apply it to whatever underused thing in dominions, there's tons of them. People just don't see them as that important, you can do without.

my guess is that it's a bit of a gamble. if you take ethereal bless, you likely won't take it imprisoned, since research and evocations will typically make it less useful later in the game. not worthless, but not as useful as early. if you take it early, it can help with expansion and some wars, but it costs a lot, and also requires magic 2, and that means that instead of dumping magic for bless or other scales, you now spend it on magic scale, possibly 160 design points difference, which is a lot for awake or dormant. and if you are unlucky, you start next to muspelheim, la atlantis or a hellblessed hinnom, which causes your bless to turn you into a target, since you spent so many design points on the ethereal bless

without the magic 2 requirement, i think it'd be seen more often

i think the other weapon blesses are better relatively, the less damage the weapons do, since they add flat damage that doesn't increase with strength, while magic weapons do as much damage as the unit's weapons normally do. the exception is to deal small amounts of damage to frail units with ethereal and no protection, like illusions and dispossessed spirits

eagle warriors probably take well to weapon blesses that add flat damage, since they have two attacks but very low damage. but, eagle warriors are very fragile

Here's the sad thing about corpse constructs (to whom it may concern)

Their "overcharge" is not the same thing as "charged body". Overcharge does 1 damage and it's capped at 1 damage, maximum.

Suppose a niefel giant hits the corpse construct, with its lightning weakness it takes double shock damage up to five, so... 2 damage + DRN - DRN, and still max 1 damage.

They can kill things like warrior illusions or dispossed spirits, or a lowish HP thug who doesn't have shock resist or regen, but otherwise you can't count on corpse constructs to kill anything. They're just blockers and HP bags.
