Yeah thinking about it more GU actually is the perfect starting game for new players for multiple reasons.

If you start with:
FU - freedom now feels pointless and you're likely to get hard filtered anyway
Freedom - you're likely to get hard filtered
P3rd - it's not fully translated which is a problem for new players
Tri/3U - underwater will never be relevant again and might filter them hard
4U - gives a terrible impression of what monster hunter actually is because of a stronger story focus as well as radically different maps
World/Rise/Wilds - make it very hard to go back to older games

So I think I'll be recommending GU as a starting point from now on especially because it'll be relevant going forward seeing as it's laid the groundwork for all modern monhun gameplay and you get to face most of the monsters in the series which is great for noobs.

I started with 4U and it's a pretty terrible game to start with. The maps are totally unlike anything in the other games and are very unforgiving which combined with spastic monsters and a lot of hit stop really teach players bad habits. You play charge counter with occasional perfect guards but this playstyle is just LS ISS with less iframes and damage honestly. I think it's really hard to convince somebody who played through the entirety of FU to go back and play freedom which is just FU with less monsters, less weapons, less maps, no cats, and less streamlining. Or to play dos which is just FU but with worse controls, a different village, basically meaningless seasons and monster battles tacked on. Or to play mh1 which is just basically the same as freedom but with even less content and feels worse to play. There's not much anything before FU offers that FU doesn't. This is the only thing that really bothers me. I hated in Rise that you had to pick either charge sword or savage with the latter being sitting in axe mode the whole time. I really like the moveset of CB in Wilds but the SnS even charged does jack shit damage despite the commitment. I enjoy CB in Wilds to some extend cause it feels like a weapon given that the out of perfect guard options tend to backfire against endgame monsters so you have to dodge here and there as well but that's about it.

I honestly dislike them in Wilds. I get the concept behind them but they just feel like the most dumbed down "just mash attack" iteration of the weapon since 4th gen. XX had the perfection that were valor dual blades (and aerial were really fun too), World had better direction change attacks, Rise had a bunch of options to make them mobile and more complex. Wilds feels like going back to playing dual blades in P3RD but now I have to mash the demon dance button 6 times instead of 1.

Wilds is literally just 4 again, and it looks like from both ingame hints and other things that basically all of 4U's roster is eventually gonna be in Wilds. Expansion will probably add Tetsu and the other mid tier monsters, Crimson Fatty will be at launch or in one of the first updates, and the whole thing is probably gonna end with White Fatty.
Idk if Dalamadur would make it in but I think they could do it. We already non Gogmazios is a siege fight so that means we gotta have a siege fight monster in the expansion too like we had with World, Dalamadur being the expansion siege fight makes sense.

Qol changes Wilds desperately needs

So I picked up wilds again after dropping it initially post launch, and for the most part it's been a "meh" experience. More things that grind my gears than make me praise it. Reached hr 100 a little while ago and began the "endgame" talisman grind.

In that time I've come up with a list of minor qol updates that wilds could really benefit from. We're not talking major things like performance, difficulty balancing, input dropping, but more so small ui/gameplay changes.

First and foremost, there needs to be an option to sort sos hunts by how long since they've commenced. Something like 0, 5, 10 min intervals. I think we've all experienced the difficulty (or lack thereof) of early to late game monsters, not including tempered 9* monsters. Too many times I've joined a hunt about 5-6+ min in only to kill the target within a minute of getting into the quest. That kind of thing really kills my interest if I can't even hunt the monster for a decent amount of time. It just feels like a waste of time.

Secondly, there should be an option to sort talismans by recently acquired. Once you've racked up pages worth of talismans, going through each page and scrolling through every single talisman to meld the ones you don't need is incredibly tedious. I know monster hunter gets a rep for being "menu hunter" but this is just unnecessary bloat.

Thirdly, and this might just be personal preference, but I want the option to filter out hunts using support hunters. Call me old fashioned but I do not care for support hunters, I'm joining sos hunts to play with other people, not bots. With a filtering system, both parties can play how they want, no one gets the short end of the stick.

Fourth, and this might be a bigger issue than just qol, but the endgame grind boils down to just 2 monsters, occasionally 3. Constant tempered 9* gore/seregios hunts get boring really fast, especially when half the time the quest ends in failure.

So basically back to 4U, as God intended. Just need actual phial damage, but they won't do it because they're still scared of the element heavy meta of Sunbreak. You could even replace phials with a gauge, so you can't spam SAED but you don't necessarily lose shield boost after dumping it. Bring back Counter Morth Slash while you're at it, having the GP before makes so much fucking sense.

I still have no fucking clue what they were trying to do with boosted sword mode.

I find myself playing a bit more Rise as a result (ded gaem). I see the issue with block->SAED spam, but the pizza cutter feels so fucking limp, and the game actively punishes you for using the best attacks in your kit. Turning a counter weapon into a combo weapon with worse attack speed than a GS, and worse convenience than basically anything quicker. Marvellous. Thanks ChoRyozo, I did RIKE.
