I know you asked for overall tips, not hero specific, but you need to find a hero you are comfortable with. My comfort pick is sk, in fact I've never lost the lane with him. I just focus on farming, I know that sk scales really well so I dont try to force ganks/fights, I just farm and do stuff when it seems good to do so. So with all that in mind, I'll give you a few tips. Really basic stuff, block the 1st wave so that the equilibrium is under your tower. If you have some downtime, for example you've pushed the wave (happens often as sk) don't just walk around or turn your brain off, run back and block the next wave so that you get the favourable equilibrium again. This really helps with unfavourable matchups. If you play something that can poke the enemy hero then you need to think if it's better than blocking the wave, Dota is a gaming with multiple choices you can make per minute. If you push you could run under the enemy tower and poke without taking tower aggro, but is it better than the thing I've mentioned before? Your call.Runes are really important. Unfortunately, it's a 50/50 if both you and the opponent try to get one. Don't waste observers just to be able to see a rune, if you went for the top rune but it didn't spawn and you can't see your opponent, he went for the bottom one and won the gamble. Try to push the wave before the runes spawn, you need to keep that in mind and plan ahead. If you get a haste rune consider ganking, but you can also just run back to base and tp back to lane if you are low, it's kind of like a regen rune. Remember that you get levels quicker than your team does. Level 6 is usually when your ganks are the strongest, but again, don't force them.

I was very lucky to start playing dota between the end of the last year and the beginning of this one. Coming from League I knew that if I want to get into this game I have to spam games and try every hero out. The Crownfall event was perfect for this with those tokens or whatever it was told. I wanted to replay the same heroes which I liked but in order to advance the story I needed to play something even if I didnt want to. Hopefully Valve adds something similar, it would help the new players out
