Don't hit him on Cross Counter turns (every 5th turn) and you should be good. Unless you stashed/sold them, you've probably got some volt talismans in your inventory. They do pretty good free damage if your party is weak offensively.

What's frustrating is I knew about cross counter but I kept going full tard and forgetting about it anyway. Often like 20 turns into the fight. Took me over four hours to beat him which is more than i've had on any EO boss that isn't a superboss. I was so pissed off I changed up my team, now i'm running Hero, Harbinger, Ninja, Gunner and Sovereign and things are running much more smoothly. Wyvern took one attempt and <10 turns. Ninja actually being a viable main class is so funny, I completely ignored it when i started out but did a little research and she's carrying random encounters with full party sleeps.

EO4's Hall of Darkness is definitely it in terms of music and atmosphere. EO5's Empyreal Bridge is probably second place (the theme is imposing but also cool as fuck) and Claret Hollow is a distant third.

5's Fetid Necropolis and 3's Cyclopean Haunt have traditionally spooky aesthetics but the music makes them feel cool and moody, not spooky. 3's Undersea Grotto has a pretty intense atmosphere thanks to the music but it's not spooky unless you don't like underwater stuff.

So funny that they created a dungeon event that will most likely lead to a game over and made it infinitely repeatable like the squirrel encounters in 2, possibly to suggest something might happen if you keep doing it.

My favorite event in that dungeon is still the one with the lost doll because of what happens when you take it back to its family and check up on them after getting the unique mace. The fact that the music just cuts out during those scenes really enhances the mood.

I'd recommend doing the 6th stratum and Abyssal God first while your party is still at an appropriate level. Levels carry over into NG+ so if you wait until the third playthrough you'll be overleveled. Beating Abyssal God is more a matter of party comp/skill usage and luck lol than it is a matter of stats.

EO is absolutely way more forgiving than wizardry. The only real risk you have is losing progress by getting party wiped, there's no BS like level downs or permadeath to worry about. Sadly the game kinda falls victim to the same QoL creep every modern JRPG suffers from, to the point the HD remasters on steam allow you to save anywhere which really deflates all of the tension of navigating dungeons.
The games focus a ton on party synergy especially from 3 onwards. Formulating and pulling off strategies to totally neutralize bosses and FOEs is incredibly satisfying.
However the games critically lack transparency in regards to what your skills actually do numbers-wise, and there tends to be a lot of noob trap skills that are wasted investments. This is arguably the most punishing aspect of the games because respeccing costs a bunch of levels, so i'd recommend you research the numbers online before investing in skills so you have a better idea of how you want to build your characters. The text based lets plays in the OP are a good source for learning the precise numbers behind skills and i'd recommend checking them out.

The games all share a setting and there is indeed an overarching lore between them, but it's not a huge focus of the individual entries; they tend to be light on story, disregarding the story modes for the Untold remakes of course, those are a different beast and sorta operate on their own separate canon.
Also this is my personal opinion, but I highly, highly recommend playing the games on an original DS/3DS console if it's at all possible. The games revolve around a mechanic where you draw the dungeon maps on the bottom touch screen, and while the HD remasters do their best to try and approximate this with button inputs or mouse controls, there's absolutely no replacing the feeling of drawing the maps with the stylus as god intended. The games do feature auto-mapping to some extent, but I recommend playing with it turned entirely off as it really elevates immersion.

They added easy mode, saving anywhere, one new song in EO3, SMT/Persona portrait DLCs, and a few minor bug fixes, but that's it. They're almost 1:1 with the originals gameplay-wise and don't add any meaningful content. So the originals played on intended hardware is the most authentic experience IMO.

Welp. I actually recall (it was a few months ago) that I did the sixth stratum, but either couldn't get to the abyssal god or tried him for a laugh and got demolished. I guess when I get back into it I'll give him a try or two, then just NG+ it if I don't feel like playing fair. Not him, but I mainly used it for refighting certain bosses for FOEs (minibosses that roam the map) for rare drops. 1 and 2 are pretty nasty with their drop rates (especially 1), so I definitely save-scummed the fuck out of some of the super bosses for their shitty, SHITTY drop rates. Though, to be fair, I did it to 100% the item logs, which is not required to fully enjoy the games at all.

The games features an FOE (short for Field On Enemy) mechanic, in which incredibly strong boss level monsters roam the dungeons alongside you, and can join in on battles if you start one near them. Most of the games feature puzzles in which you have to navigate around them without letting them catch you, and the risk for failure is a likely party wipe.
As you can imagine, saving anywhere completely destroys the challenge posed by FOEs. Not sure how to deal with a puzzle involving them? Just savescum lol. Did you get cornered by one and are facing a game over? Just savescum lol. Of course this is getting into "you control the buttons you press" territory, but I strongly dislike seeing one of the series' coolest ideas get neutered like this.

Not really. It takes little snippets of previous games to make a fan service game, but that's all it is, snippets. It doesn't have all the classes and it doesn't have all the dungeons. Plus it has its own issues like poor balancing and pacing. Each prior game is still a full experience that's worth playing.

looking at EO3-5 i'm a little concerned about how much derivative classes (e.g. sovereigns and dancers to troubadours, runemasters and zodiacs to alchemists, harbingers and arcanists to hexers and so on) deviate from the originals

Yeah each new game has a roster of derivative classes with their own divergent mechanics and they're played slightly differently. This is obviously a good thing because playing with the same mechanics for 8 games would get kind of old.
As for whether they're improvements it really depends on execution and preference. There are some flubbed designs, mostly in the earliest entries, but for the most part, any party that's clearly well rounded can beat any of the games.

It's entirely up to you, obviously, and eo1 and 2 have a very classic charm, but 3 onwards is where they really start letting you do more than "this is the fighter, he does physical damage, this is the mage, this is the healer, this is the tank, this is the status dude"
Like in 4 you can sub out the medic for the sticc you see all over this thread. The sticc does statuses and healing, and to all party members and all enemies.
In eo3 you can have a wilder summon animals to fill the 6th slot, you can make your zodiac a TP battery so you can spam nukes, you can put your archer in the front row for a shitzillion damage.

But someone also beat eo1 with 5 survivalists and apparently they said it was easy too due to multi-shot.

my problem is whether the classes deviate to the point at which their inter-class synergies end up disappearing
to use a different series as an example: in Bravely Default, the Dark Knight class has a technique that consumes HP to keep attacking until its HP reaches 1 or it attacks 5 times; the class can pair with the Spell Fencer's Sword Magic Drain, meaning that the Dark Knight will gain HP back for every point of damage dealt, allowing it to always attack for the maximum amount of times every time it uses the technique.
in Bravely Second, the Spell Fencer is replaced by the Hawkeye class, which only allows weapons to be imbued with elements rather than full spells, meaning that such a synergy like the one i mentioned isn't possible anymore
does this happen to any similar degree in the EO series?

Pretty much every entry in the series has a whole new class roster designed to work around eachother's strengths and weaknesses. Even games that have returning classes like Nexus or the Untolds will rebalance them to play well together.
Class synergy is also explored through the subclassing mechanic, which allows on class to use the skills of another at a lowered power. For example, Fortress in EO4 is a tank focused around drawing aggro and mitigating damage. If you subclass them as a Dancer, which has a passive that boosts evasion rates, you can turn them into an exceptionally strong dodge tank that eats up multihit attacks like they're nothing. The games are full of this kind of experimentation, and while there are optimal builds that funnel you towards certain options if you wanna minmax damage, you have a good amount of freedom in how you build your party.
