I did one round as an engi and all the little crevices you can park in made it so we had the same tank nearly the entire match with me as the only engi. The thing is still pretty accurate even at range, too. I've been considering removing the laser as soon as I unlock the 27 round mags but honestly I may just leave it as is. The 23 round mags serve the purpose of letting you get more than a single kill per mag as is. Maybe if it was a 30 round mag instead of 27 I'd swap.
