My biggest issue with Setsuna is that it doesn't let you double jump after teleporting in normal form unlike Chain Arc, which makes it really awkward to use in boss fights where you need mobility to dodge attacks. It also has this weird knockback effect that makes it hard to position yourself after teleporting. Even though you can press X to teleport through enemies, it is not as easy as Chain Arc, where you can just press the d pad to choose Kirin's position after teleporting. I don't know how they managed to downgrade something they had already perfected on the first try.

Not really. Inti was given a relative amount of freedom for the Zero games. However, Zero 1-3 were developed with Inafune, a lot of Inti staff at the time were former Mega Man developers, and they tended to learn from other Mega Man games to try and achieve a particularly high quality. Something like Zero 2 doesn't exist in a vacuum, it ended up becoming a great Mega Man game due to learning from a game like X2, which Inti staff worked on before Inti was formed.

There wasn't enough physical resources to animate every attack of enemies, nor was the enemy AI capable of being more more advanced or complex than "Run into player." hence the need for physical damage. You'd be surprised the kind of black magic they had to do to be able to store and use even the animations they had in as little as 30KiB of memory.

So yeah, a compromise for technical limitations. It literally serves no purpose nowadays, and only gets you in ridiculous and unsatisfying situations like in, I don't know, Bloodstained where if you touch an archer's pinky you get damaged for as much as if their arrows hit you. Or if an enemy has a move that is very much not meant to be an attack, but still damages you for the full amount anyway. It's moronic.
That said, there is also an incentive to kill almost every enemy in Metroidvanias due to XP systems and items. There isn't in Majogami.

There it's an obstacle course, not a fighting gauntlet. Another thing Metal Slug does is that it can fill the screen with enemies in ways that Contra can't. Contra relies heavily on enemies that are easy to dispatch in droves, while Metal Slug might throw in enemies that layer up with others, requiring more time to take them all down. That way Metal Slug is able to create some segments where the objective basically is to survive, with some enemies still presenting the opportunity to do a melee attack if you stick around for too long.

Amusingly, I guess Mario Wonder added a small animation for contact damage (goomba biting you etc), but that works since historically Mario has always had a hitstop when you take a hit and lose your power up. It is a design choice among many others. Hell, you could avoid putting on contact damage on enemies, and instead give them some sort of pushback collision, so player can't directly walk past/through them (3d games do this, less common in 2d games). Another idea is to increase enemy aggression so that they can still present a threat or follow you even if you can walk past them, possibly at the cost of considerably increasing difficulty.
No matter how you slice it, if you remove contact damage you need to put in some additional considerations elsewhere, because the average enemy (maybe jumps, maybe shoots, maybe reacts to player's presence at some distance) in a platformer doesn't really do anything without the contact damage.

That's what I've been saying. Ender Magnolia, which started this entire shitshow, either have enemies that engage you the moment they see you, or an "aggression state" that either lines up attacks, or is part of an attack that you cannot phase through. Long story short; The enemies are all designed with the fact in mind you can run past them, and it works in its favor when the developers don't have to consider how many enemies they place in the room - or how mobile the enemies are, or how often the boss relocates - out of fear for the player getting boxed in and taking needless contact damage. Only whether there is an attack they can dodge or not.

Contact damage is a more efficient albeit lazy choice. Why? Because if you don't have contact damage, you need a bespoken animation for any enemy to hurt you. With contact damage you don't need to design a way for each enemy to hurt you or to be a threat, it just is one by existing. This also comes with aforementioned issues and is usually one of, if not, the most criticized and frustrating part of any game. Because it's not needed anymore.

I like Legends and I'm a zoomer, but it's mostly ruined by the controls. There are some moments during underground exploration where you realize these games could be really fun, but it rarely reaches this peak. Majogami boss fights absolutely do not compare in quality to GV3 or even iX2 and it's not even close. I will say they're at least better than their other recent games (GG2 and Umbraclaw spring to mind as having particularly bad boss fights save for a couple in GG2) but it's faint praise.

I think the best hope for Inti at this point is that they get contracted to make something with stipulated mechanics. When they're left to their own devices on game design they pile up stupid ideas and don't think things through.
