Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Rip, you usually want at least 2 water nations, and maybe some other nations that can get in the water without too many issues to help keep that in check. Two water nations means a bigger pool, but hopefully they at least fight each other and force gems to be lost as they do what they can to win their first war. Two caps means more gems, but I think the distraction and gem use makes up for it.

Doing all standard remote spells takes 21 gems + 5 blood slaves. Knowledge is 25 (and gets you Holy as a bonus). Saves 8 mage turns per cast, too

What Anon said, though DE also adds new nations, and for some shitter nations it tends to make a few changes. EA lizards for example, get their weapons changed to bronze, a sacred lizard chariot out of cap troop, snek dancers get berserk, and if I recall a new mage that's a good research monkie with 2 randoms, and two chances to get astral to make em a com slav or com up and throw out whatever other path they randomed..
Meanwhile, MA Oceania got changed to a nation that wants to get ON land since you can pump river minotaur troops and mages out. There's a river styx thing that also gives them elite water centaur sacreds blessed with high invul and good armor, alongside a fate 2 handed spear attack. Some out of cap death too, but it's fairly inconsistent and may not even get you D1, much less D2.

Then idk, throw in a host of new nations, new spells, some pretender changes, WH being merged with it last I recall, and a few other things. Lots of new national spells for nations that were a little lacking before too.

On the note of '''normal''' pretenders, is going full angel with your nation actually viable? like would you really want to cast merkavah or is the game over by then. But I assume the angels in the lower rank spells are pretty good?
Also I think one of the coolest lore tidbits I've seen is that one of the indie mage groups, the astral/fire crosspath one developed a spell specifically to fuck over horrors. Not even Horrors are immune to enough research points. It's neat.

Zion has F-tier unit recruits and relies on summons with F and S gems. As a disciple it needs an awake or dormant pretender to salvage expansion and protect itself from rushes.
If you want to go imp or don't want the competition for pearls, I wouldn't mind playing Shinu, though they would really like unaging.
