I've been thinking more about the possibility of Noelle being the Knight. It could be possible that if Kris and Noelle already know about the Soul, they could also know that the Soul can save and load. If they do know that, it could explain why chapter 3 contains a step by step guide on how to do the weird route: to trick us into going back and doing it, so that Noelle ends up with the Soul. They would have to reveal the steps in a roundabout way without explicitly stating that they know about us, because if they are too direct we will notice the trap and sidestep it. It could be Friend tricking us instead, but I'm not sure. Just a possible way to interpret the weird route, that it exists solely to trap and trick the player as they try to pursue another genocide route.
