Working on a gametype.

Update of a Firefight gametype I had made previously that was tweaking the gameplay to play like Combat Evolved.
It already had a PvP element, but I had some interesting ideas for PvP.
So on top of it playing more like Halo 1...

>Elite players start with 25 lives
>Spartans can gain a max of 25 lives total
>Killing an Elite player grants Spartans 2 lives.
>When an Elite player dies, his respawn timer grows by 5 seconds

Been looking at stats and trying to tune Elite players to be comparable to a Halo CE Elite General, although maybe a little weaker for PvP purposes. Gotta strike the right balance.
In the previous version of the gametype I had Spartan players loadouts include Active Camo and Drop Shield to simulate camo and overshield powerups respectively.
In this gametype, only Elites will have Armor Abilities, and when they're killed they'll drop them.

The idea is to tune it just right so Elite players have a real chance of eliminating the Spartans, but every time an Elite player dies its a significant boost for Spartans - dropping Armor Abilities, powerful weapons, and adding 2 lives to their pool.
Spartans also have a real chance of eliminating the Elites, with only 25 lives available to them.
Neither is likely to happen in a 7 minute round, but this seems like a nice balance to create some tension

I guess some kind of explanation is in order. This is the Endless, a new ancient evil revealed near the end of the first and only Halo Infinite single player campaign titled "Become". The Endless is a species of alien imprisoned on the Zeta Halo ring (Installation 07) by the Forerunners. On the ring is a location known as "The Silent Auditorium" in which The Forerunners would pass judgement on The Endless before their imprisonment. The Endless as we know it is similar in appearance to those of the Cambrian Explosion approximately 541 million years ago on our own planet Earth. Pure speculation at this point, but this may be a new hint connecting Humans and Forerunners in the Halo series. Anyway, the only remaining member of The Endless that we know about is The Harbinger, who joins a faction of former Covenant known as The Banished, lead of course by the Brute War Master known as Atriox. She does so with the secret plan to use The Banished and their hold on the Zeta Halo ring to free her people from their ancient imprisonment and unleash them upon the unknowing Galaxy. What's easier to obtain is the Unique User counts but that's also a very misleading metric.
As far as MCC goes, it had a very poor population from 2015 until about 2018 due to an assortment of networking issues and performance bugs.
It stuck it out though and against all odds is now the most played Halo game.

Elite loadouts are

Elites can't pick up weapons, but they have infinite ammo, a buff to their health, and 1 layer of overshield.

The idea was for Elites to be tough but fun and rewarding to kill like facing off against a General in the campaign. (esp. with dropping power weapons and Armor Abilities - picking your loadout as an Elite is a risk/reward tradeoff - ie. You can try to rampage with the Fuel Rod, but if you die you've just delivered power weapons and Armor Lock to the Spartans).
My thinking with the overshield was to prevent Elite players getting sniped from across the map.

Playing both sides, I think I might add a Shotgun for the Spartans. Elites are currently really deadly at close quarters with their shields, and a Shotgun would mitigate that.
OR
Might remove or nerf the Sniper loadout (no secondary weapon) AND remove the Elite overshield.

I have a weak understanding, but iirc each map is basically a self-contained file with all of the assets packed inside. For example, a campaign mission that doesn't have the rocket launcher appear means you wouldn't be able to spawn it even using dev tools. That means making any changes to the level's geometry would mean re-compiling the map entirely and requiring users to download it again. I'm guessing bungie did have a way to hotfix certain things, because they were able to add invisible barriers to campaign maps. there was probably a way to sideload those since the storage required would be literally less than a kilobyte just to describe the dimensions and coordinates of a polygon to block the player.

Rusty as fuck, but playing some MCC mods has been an interesting experience so far.

It's the nature of the game. When Reach was the in thing I remember people trying to find ways to game XP but at least you could earn shit in-game. With Infinite having so many vaulted items but also requiring basically everything to work towards XP of some sort as people either level passes or hunt for the Hero rank, a lot of the fun got optimized out in favor of XP. Happens with many games, cosmetics or otherwise; Battlefield 6 is suffering from shit challenges and low XP rates that the devs are trying to fix and tons of people prioritized the grind, though BF6 puts actual good weapons and equipment behind that shit. You're gonna see it happen with Black Ops 6, too.
With everything so focused on unlocks and cosmetics nowadays, you need friend groups or to just ignore a lot of online shit to get basic interactions at this point.

Halo 3 might have added more shit to the sandbox in sheer quantity but Halo 2 has everything you actually need in place to make good mods already, even the medkit code is still there from Combat Evolved.

The night time halo 3 campaign pack is great. The flashlight version is goated. In addition to making the game look gothic and vivid, it gives the assault rifle headshot capability which plays surprisingly well. There's also an incomplete mod pack that puts halo 3's levels in odst's engine with some new weapons and they look and play a lot better than the originals.

It's been 21 years, so can we finally admit Halo 2's campaign sucks? I've just replayed it on Heroic and it dawned on me that NONE of the guns feel satisfying to use aside from the Fuel Rod. Every weapon in Halo 1 felt satisfying even on Legendary, but in Halo 2 the feedback is just meh.

It's also a VERY frontloaded campaign as the game peaks with the Scarab Fight in Metropolis. Halo 2 has way too many wave defense scenes, and if you're not holding position you're instead running down a narrow corridor with few tactical avenues. "Shooting Gallery" and the gravity bridge Drones in High Charity have also got to be the WORST parts of ANY Halo.
There's not a single enjoyable vehicle section either:

The music and story are 10/10 though. I was also surprised to find I liked High Charity MORE this time around. As much as I bitched about the gravity bridge part, much of the level feels almost like a Resident Evil game as it's not always wise to fight; sometimes you need to bait the AI into fighting each other to give yourself an opening to run, which is great fucking stuff, I love that.

I think the thing that hurts the most is that Halo 2 did not feel like a sequel. Halo CE might as well have been an entirely different and isolated game. Almost like how Bioshock Infinite completely dropped the tone and universe of Bioshock 1&2.

Halo reach would be on par with Halo 3 for me if it weren't so repetitive. So many overdone encounters. The first level especially is so bad that it's fully stopped me from wanting to do playthroughs again. I like that elites in reach actually feel formidable.

I think 2 legendary has more longevity than ce's or 3's. Meaning you can enjoy it more over time. 3 and ce play largely the same on legendary as they do on normal but 2 legendary is like a different game entirely. new avenues to explore. more than just an achievement for 100 gamerscore. Feel similarly about reach legendary with tilt thunderstorm. game plays completely differently with you having more health to get in close but needing more than just the dmr to make it through.

rebalances are low-hanging fruit. a lot of busywork which autists love. spreadsheets and minor adjustments to feel like they are making something new. It's a bit of a scourge on the community because half the mods are very low-effort asset or tag swaps.

creating something new is genuinely really difficult. there's a few isolated examples on workshop of people who have created their own levels, but they're extremely rough. Inferno's pirate ship map is mostly just code-heavy and not really an actual map with complex geography. Even in the Halo: Custom Edition days, a lot of maps used copy+pasted geography from other official maps. Which was actually pretty nice because the art style was consistent. But then there's examples like SPV3 that are just an absolute cluster fuck of digital diarrhea

Hell, that's why the original COD zombies maps were all just modified campaign/multiplayer levels. Even moon on BLOPS1 started from geography of Paris that was either a cut level or from a different COD, can't remember.

Yeah but combining levels to make something that feels totally new should be relatively easy. Reach especially takes place on one coherent planet for most of the game with similar feeling outdoor areas that should be simple enough to stich together to create a level that feels new and then you can have a level within a city that leads into an indoor base environment which the game also has enough of that feel similar enough you can stich together to make a new city and base level. Same with Covenant interiors including multiplayer maps. You can create a whole narrative just from mixing and matching existing maps.

Pretty much all this. On a difficulty scale, modifying an existing level is playing on Easy, but making an entirely new level from scratch is playing on LASO. It requires a decent amount of knowledge in how BSP geometry works, aswell as extensive knowledge in a 3D program of some kind. Back then, the Vidocs showed that Bungie used 3DS Max. Nowadays, though, Blender is what's mainly used atleast, in all the tutorials. There's also other factors, those being:
>Texturing the entire level, which is a headache all on its own, especially if your using original stuff, then getting those textures to show up in the editor aswell as the game itself is a tedious job all on its own.
>Testing the level extensively to ensure there isn't something you've missed, like a bad seam that lets you fall through the level, or some material fuckery that doesn't play well with MCC, or just unexplainable crashes in general

God fucking help you if you're making a playable mission of some kind, too, or even worse: an entire campaign. A simple MP level isn't too difficult, but with a mission, you have several other hurdles added onto it, those being AI, BSP swapping, voice acting, cutscenes, even MORE testing, ensuring the level is stable/optimized, the occasional unexplainable crash, and just scripting as a whole. Also, by far the biggest issue of them all:

They are going to cut most of the game modes and focus on three at most, because most online games now operate with a small suite of modes instead of a big suite and Infinite 1 did not explode in popularity with a big suite. They are going to cut map editor, because it's not a feature many players use and Unreal Engine will allow them to churn out maps faster. It will be free to play with no campaign, this frees up the campaign to do something different mechanically if they want to and doesn't dilute or confuse the marketing of multiplayer. Not nearly as bad, but I think of the necessity for this new version of Halo 1 to have hit markers to see if you’re hitting your enemies. Without it it’s hard to tell if your shots hit. With the original 2001 version it was completely unnecessary because of the way Elite Shields reacted to shots and how bloody the game was. You had natural in game visual feedback in addition to audio feedback.

Like it's actually actively damaging to the value of armor customization even because unless the fag you're fighting has reindeer antlers on or some shit they all just look like a vaguely Spartan silhouette. But take when you're trying to shoot some fag out of a Ghost or Chopper or figure out how many passengers are in a Warthog or Falcon and you can no longer tell where the fuck the vehicle ends and Spartans start.

Those are the types of stuff I wanted but instead we got the DMR and Carbine. I'm surprised we even got a fuel-rod instead of another scoped weapon. I don't know why they bothered with the Avenger. Even the sticky detonator which is mostly useless would have been fine because of its unique function in the sandbox. And I don't know why the couldn't do Borderlands-esque stuff with the weapons like they did with 5, that stuff would be perfect for Fiesta and silly customs.

Yeah, but you can play 4-player co-op now. There will be like 3 or 4 extra missions too and some returning weapons from other Halo games. But yeah. Just campaign. They will be making a separate multiplayer game, probably free-to-play, while you have to pay for the standalone campaigns.

CTF plays best in Halo 1 because it flows better between attackers and defenders. The compressed average/ideal killtimes combined with slower TTK after Halo 1 places more emphasis on getting good teamshot angles than your individual role within a team. Being able to drive vehicles while running flags enables incredibly bold and aggressive big team plays. Flag at home to score adds a lot of tension to the game and it also means you can't just aggro out flag caps with no care put into defending your own. Very fun mode.

It's not.and dying is meaningless since vehicles and weapons respawn extremely fast. For the defenders, it's RNG bullshit because of the Pistol's spread. And the Ghost love tap makes it all even worse. The only reliable way to fight it off is either camping with a Rocket Hog (not fun for attackers and defenders) or stuffing pathways with vehicles.

Headshot meta autism was only exacerbated by how half the sandbox was gutted by dual wielding. Removing the BR/Carbine/snipers from the game doesn't change the fact that Plasma Rifle+SMG isn't as fun as a lone Plasma Rifle in CE.
