actually i think that would have been manually set verts and drawn with GPU commands, I've done something similar where I took the AGDG logo like above >>545830074 and I just clicked points to set verts, and then that let me bring the agdg logo in engine in like, <100 bytes, verse a .png that would be much bigger game resource. in n64 days I'd assume they'd do that, like give the image to a coder and he makes a new .cpp file with a statically defined array with a list of XY coords and he just pixel peeps the edges in photoshop and compiles it into code to draw it like a hard coded vector, save much more ROM space. but anyway the original was probably done on texta + paper and scanned in I'd assume

sounds like glyph keeper, depending on what engine (unity/godot you can do this) you should be able to create a "3d text" object, specify the .ttf, type the words, and it procgens a mesh. That way you got resolution independence and lighting interaction, but of course the font has to be large size. Else you can use some asset that does "sdf font texture generator" it will come with a custom shader to render it, that is a step better than regular .ttf -> .png font texture atlas generators, tho I don't know how the maths works but it helps keep the text sharp

Here is a change log

-Removed lore ghosts for now from the demo the full game will have them with better audio and sound levels.

-Removed GET GOOD voices completely

-Fixed bombs so they instantly kill you

-Pressing ESC key on the main menu, once to open the quit canvas and again to confirm quit; quits the game

-Pressing ESC key on the cat shop menu closes it now.

-Made Bokube Tutorial level 1 easier by deleting some of the landmines in the instant kill teaching section.

-Made Snow Crystal Cave level 2 easier by removing some traps and enemies.

-Made Desert Target easier by adding more safety wood floors, removing some enemies, and traps.

-Made Spooky_3 easier by slowing down the oinky ghosts, editing the oinky enemies

-Made Easter Boss easier by slowing down the second arena attack of the big bird boss

-Made the cannon enemy firing better and not when the game is paused.

-Bomb explosions ((should)) kill instantly now.

-Made the Water Ice Death warning be 7 seconds long instead of 3 seconds long. I changed it font to the menu's font and added a speech bubble similar to the OUCH text so it fits the game more.

-Turned down the noise level of the windmills in the tutorial level.

-turned down the noise level fx of enemies on the ground in the 2nd level.

-Redid the cat shop menu to be more similar to the pause menu.

-Changed the background of the pause menu and added concept art to it so it fits the game style more. I'm gonna do something I guess where the art changes the concept art depending on which zone of the game you're in so its more charming.

-Changed the Settings canvas art so its not concept art anymore but its boku upside down and gave it a better background thats similar to the pause menu so the style carries through.

If they're so good at it, why don't they make a game and mop the floor with AAA and III game's raking in 10k+ reviews? Even from a non-game dev perspective I wouldn't want to watch these video's. The consooomers might not get it but little by little this erodes the mystery and appeal of a game.

-Gave logo scene, anime opening scene, the code scripts required to keep the games settings menu data for screen res so if you edit the games settings from any scene in the game the splash logo scene, and FMV opening scene should stay true to your settings.

-Added a alt-tab pause game C# script to the whole game on every scene so the games state will pause if the user alt-tabs out of the program at all.

-Slowed down the sprint roll a bit. (this is suppose to feel fast enough though)

-Pressing ESC in the settings menu now closes it just like the pause menu

-Pressing ESC in the controls help closes everything then you reopen pause and its just pause menu.

-The tutorial text ((Should)) fit your screen now.. I think?

-Pressing F for the cat shop at the start of the snow cave level is impossible to kill the player now.

-Deleted the upper spike log in the theme park pool I didn't like it anyway the level needed to be a bit easier i think.

-Fixed the tile walls in the pool right of the checkpoint

-Removed the theme park level from the BOKUBE demo and swapped it for another early game easier easter zone level. This new level is untested new content though and will probably need to be updated based on feedback as well...

-Fixed the WAIT here collision sign from the theme park level despite it not being in the demo anymore.

-Added enough coins at the start of the tutorial to let the player buy at least 3 health cakes so they can learn how to use the health cake shop with enough starting money.
The removal of the theme park level and swapping it out for another level from the full game... if you have not played the demo yet I recommend this one for posting feedback as il need it for this new level. Hopefully it wont filter people with the difficulty like the theme park level did.

They are a specialist for a single or a few limited aspects of gamedev, and it takes far more to release a game. Many have already worked as a part of a larger AAA/AA project.

they're "better" if you prefer the aesthetic they create. it's fine in a game with a retro or very cartoonish look. but if you're going for anything resembling realism, then limiting the colour palette will make it look worse. if you want ANYTHING in the game to look smooth, like lighting for example, then it will look like ass with a limited palette.

for what it's worth, I do understand *some* things about programming - I know what an array is and what it does, I know what if/else statements and loops are, I know what functions are, I know what a class is, I know what a header file is, I know the basic operators (though I struggle to understand what the actual difference is between . :: and -> and where I would use one over the other) etc. I also know the basics of the formatting (which lines to not end with semicolons, where to use parentheses and curly brackets, etc). it's just the specific keywords, functions and syntax that I'm not familiar with.

Legally distinct code, pretty easy to make a small amount of changes. As long as it's not hundreds of lines that are 1:1 I doubt you'd get sued. 5 lines here, 20 lines over there, and then slight adjustments to variable names, oh your game has something the other does not and suddenly there's a new line in between where their's had none. Easy peasy. And if it's very simple code it'd be pretty hard of them to even sue. As if there isn't many people who've got similar code for things like character movement.

I made a quick collage for DD 65. I think most characters are here but I most likely missed few.
I'm not amazingly happy with the quality on this one. I tried to create it in a traditional christmas card style and used a real christmas card as the background. I did rush quite alot as I wanted to finish around the same time as dd64 finished too.

I need some opinions.

I wanted to develop a similar board game to taikyoku shogi, but design each piece to be easy to understand just looking at the piece.

The rules of these pieces are the following.

the letters go from A to F, which indicates the family of the piece, and the second piece goes also from A to F.
It serves to name easily all the 256 pieces, using an easy to remember kinda hex code.

The shape of the piece, indicate the direction it moves.
Basically the square one, moves horizontally and vertically, the romboid shape, moves diagonally.

The pieces move only a single step of distance.

But, the color of the gray inner border, indicates something like the military rank, or age of the piece.
Basically It means that the piece will be more powerfull the darker they are, and there's 5 ranks, in each family.

So, the first rank only has a single block of distance range.
A fifth rank has a 5 distance range motion of blocks.

The circle indicates the angle where It can move beyond a single block of distance.
So it being at the corners, means that the bonus rank motion is at the corner where the circle is.
And on the square shape, it's on the direction of the circle.

Hey thanks for playing my game, Ocean in the Cold Sky. I was watching and trying to chat but maybe because I made my account just today the messages weren't showing up. It was probably best to see you play it without guidance, though, disheartening as it was.
I'll just organize my thoughts here since I feel like it:
I see I'm throwing too much stuff at the player at once, and the mechanics are so strange even something like sprinting requires more explanation, or you end up walking away from enemies at the same speed they're approaching and can't get away, and since you can't create distance it's harder to intuit that you need to pull back your sword before swinging it at your enemies to create enough momentum to cut through them. It would be better even to just break that stalemate by killing the player. The game needs to pivot harder to horror, since the experience of a normal person playing the first time is helplessness. I'll chill out with the enemy spawning and give more options for avoiding combat or killing at range with resources, and make losing more fun.
It was also interesting to see how a few simple issues can make a game seem cheap. At one point the streamer added another player in slot 4 by accident and so removed them, but clicking the box changed keyboard-1 to control party member 4, so they loaded into the game and the camera was uncentered and they couldn't control the player 1 that spawned. It could be fixed by hitting pause and clicking slot 1, but he couldn't know that. The culling optimization also malfunctioned because of his large monitor resolution, causing a really shitty look which is actually just a really easy fix. I guess QA is actually pretty important, thanks streamer for doing it for me.
I thought I was finally bringing it all together, but that's only from the point of view of an expert playing it as an action game. But know it's clear what I need to rework it into.
