I'm going to ask this here because this other thread is more fringe and the question might be overly dumb anyway, so less eyes will read it: I have this conspiracy theory (or conspiracy hypothesis) that involves fangames, fanengine, hacks or mods projects. I'm starting to notice that there is a correlation of what the most popular project being almost equal to what the official company the franchise comes from decides to do next. Of course, the simple explanation is "the developers might see the good ideas and maybe just implement them" or even "good ideas are good ideas, coming from a fan or a developer just meant they arrived at the same unique logical end". But what if these projects are actually experiments that these companies are purposefully making in order to "test" which will be the next product they will make? Elect a group of high skilled individual, don't necessarily hire them, but find a way to make them connected enough to make demands, demand them each to make whatever they want (or maybe directly ask a specific project), associate with some funding platform and see if it works. Might influence the next product or just be the next product outright. Sonic seems to be having these pattern, specially when you see some leaks or shareholder documents and Mega man seems also be going the same path, albeit with less evidence.
