I agree. I think it's more than expanded map layouts. There's an art to designing metroidvania maps, to reward the player for exploration (or more importantly, make the player feel rewarded, even if they're just picking up some new weapon they'll never use anyway) and running into deadends without feeling like dead time. Inti has never shown that they can do this well.

I do think they can do bigger stages, they seem capable of that.

I think the issue is that the action game design approach is at odds with what you describe. A lot of people who prefer action games tend to find exploration games like these to suffer mechanically, as they usually don't care about games focused on the feeling of exploration that much, and sometimes prefer shorter stages outright. Inti's focus on action game design means that they end up being at odds with metroidvanias, the same way some metroidvanias end up being at odds with genre's fans for straying towards action games (like Portrait of Ruin or Order of Ecclesia). It's concerning that Inti's sturggling even with action games these days, though.

Boss fights have been mostly good, setsuna is fun when you get the hang of it, levels have been pretty good. All those have issues, but not enough to make them actually bad.

nta I don't play inti games often, but I'm actually enjoying the fast pace of it all (the last inti game I played was the second copen game, so this felt like a extension of that). The directional stuff is pretty jank, but I'm handling it and prioritizing positioning to work with it

Also, on a very surface level not, Shiroha gaining the Astral powers reminds me a lot of Shaman King and how their abilities evolved so I love that too

Bosses have a good flow to them. I like how their attacks get more involved as their health goes down. There's been some cases where that goes too far and an attack that I liked before gets bad, but it's mostly a positive.
Setsuna is good. It feels good to get around stages with it or maintain airtime in boss fights, and I like the directional cuts. The lock-on system lacks control and needs work, though, and I'd really like a few more i-frames.
Levels are paced very well, and feel about as long and involved as they need to be. They're not stand-out or anything, but they get the job done. Again, setsunaing around them feels good, especially when you can skip a little platforming by dashing to a guy above you.

Yeah, the auto-targeting is the issue. It flips around on it's own too easily and is too sluggish when you tell it to do so yourself. I think every one of those sections with a bunch of enemies in a row you're supposed to just mash setsuna through and feel cool fucked up with the targeting skipping a guy and then doubling back for him.

That's a different system too, and one that sounds too involved for it's own good. You want the player to take their finger off the face buttons and onto the right stick in a 2D action platformer? Fuck that.
Basing direction on positioning is simple and intuitive. Moving around the game environment in relation to enemies is already how these games work. The only problem is the lock-on, which can be fixed without changing the system completely. Just make it act less on it's own and more responsive to player input.

He has all the special weapons, but there are few weapons and no Buster. You can put it in the last stage from the beginning, but you usually need a buster to clear it.
The X1 is also equipped with foot parts at the beginning. Travel around the world, fast growing, and looking for the world's only Buster.
In multi-game, if you pick up one of the Buster bullets, you can use it in all games.
