For these pre-1.22 commits? Absolutely. I may just hold on to 1.21 forever unless there's a feature so goddamn shiny I can't possibly ignore ignore. I think RA's washed up, though. It was/is great, but I just don't see any real advancement coming.

You know, when devs accidentally break something and their software starts crashing for no reason they usually stop everything else they're doing to patch it asap, this is the first time i saw someone do the opposite and just drop development

Knife's Edge, yes. Body Harvest intro, closer than any emu but not quite. Saturn in particular is a cut above software on Mister. Some edge-cases in PS1 emulation run properly on the core as well, but you'd really have to look for them.

Some games are really demanding on Dolphin, though, you need ST performance on the level of an i7-7700K. I think it's more or less reasonable to categorize them that way.

I haven't tried that, but off the top of my head a few games I wanted to play which weren't working on last version of yuzu:

Bloodborne is CPU limited at times on Zen 3 and 4, and I'm sure other games are (and will be) far more demanding. Not 'slow', mind you, but GPU will be <100% and the framerate will be <60fps. Bloodborne isn't exactly maximizing the PS4 either.

Yeah, it's interesting how SHADPS4 is already this CPU-hungry, but no way PS4 CPU translation (especially that weak AMD Jaguar) x86-to-x86 should ever demand a 7500F/12500-level chip like RPCS3 does.

I'm tempted to test this on my Deck, but unfortunately the only archive of v1.5.0-1133-g03c2ae9 I could find was for Winblows. Not sure if that's an ideal way to test.
>>
>>546548330
I'll be honest, I'm skimming some 750ti vids and while it does get 100%'d at times, it's rarely the bottleneck and does a lot better than I thought it would. I imagine it does become a bottleneck on higher end CPUs very quickly, though. Some of these vids have the CPU so tapped out (80-100% / 15fps) it's hard to tell if the GPU would struggle with more frames. Either way I'd feel more confident having a 1050 or 1060 in there.

I'd say at this point 1060 / 780M is the "let me guess, you need more?" mark where just about any emu will run with a few enhancements up to 1080p. The one exception off-hand is Bloodborne, but I got that running at 720 / 30 on such hardware.

Is there a "lookin' wide" version of the "lookin' good" image?
>>
>>546546206
Yeah, I neglected to mention you need to use guest's bleeding edge shaders from the libretro forums. As for the colors and brightness, it's a very tough balancing act. I can get the brightness to match the raw picture, but the colors start looking even more off than they currently are. Likewise, I can correct the colors by fucking with the gamma, but usually this results in a loss in brightness. The biggest culprit in the colors changing as they are seems to be the Bloom parameter, which I use because it's the most effective way to make bright colors pop and not look like a dull gray, but maybe there's a better way, idk.
>>
>>546577239
Yes, but it depends on the game. Most PS1 games don't have analog support, so using the stick for them will just act like a dpad.

Not sure how to fix pls help :(

I've got to say, there's not a whole lot of reason to use Melon-sharts. It doesn't run-ahead. Shaders aren't ideal for DS, especially when you do the 3:1 different-sized screens thing. Stand-alone has better DSi management.

A game disc not found error appears when using Dolphin.
Asserts appear during gameplay. They all can be ignored.

The game was known as David Leadbetter Golf Training at this point in development.
Different title screen.

Music is played on the main menu. This would oddly be removed in the final.

It's how those old smoothing filters in early 2000's emulators are meant to look. They were meant to be displayed at 640x480 on PC CRT monitors. Not gonna say they look particularly good in any case, but at least they make a modicum of sense when seen in that context.

Hey I'm pretty new to emulation, I have emulated some old gameboy games on my phone, but I recently got a new PC with a relatively high end CPU and I'm looking to get into emulation a little bit.

I was scrolling the wiki and checked out the Wii U emulation page and it has all of the newer pokemon games listed as "Ingame" compatibility. Is this because it requires higher end specs than the emulator normally recommends or is there a larger issue that would prevent me from enjoying said games?

The CPU scores around ~2.5 out of 3. It appears weaker than the Ryzen 5 7540U, which in turn is weaker than the 7500F. Overall, it's more comparable to something like an 8400F, but as a mobile variant repurposed into an APU, I suppose.

Curious about the stupid controller and price. As for the machine I have an AMD mini that's just as capable (well, GPU's a lil weaker) that I can install whatever on. I really don't see how the base machine is significantly better than a 780M equipped mini for $350. It better be priced competitively as fuck.
>>
>>546757627
(cont) I'm more looking forward to "Strix Halo" (8060S APU) equipped minis and laptops becoming cheaper, honestly.
>>
Alright so maybe I'm selling the new Steam machine's GPU a lil short. It's probably about 60-80% faster than a 780M. Still, any more than $600 is probably a no-go. At least with a mini + APU you can allocate as much memory as you want to VRAM.
>>
>>546759109
GPU is good enough, bro, but I think they should go for a bit more CPU performance (it is good but it could be better i thinkk). Usually, they don't prioritize CPU performance in pre-built/mini/APU/console systems since the eighth-gen

Did ya guys hear?

Dirty Matthew had a massive meltdown again, forced Flathub to remove Cucкstation completely. Since 98.82% of all decent Linux distros use and extensively rely on Flatpaks nowadays, it means Dungstation is pretty much dead on Linux. It's faggover, he completely lost it. Linux won't have it anymore, unless someone forks the latest known stable build ASAP. This is even worse situation than what that faggot did on Windows 7.
>>
>>546783551

Yeah. Not to say 80% of a 7600 isn't much better than 780M. It is. I just don't think they can charge more than $600 for it when you can get a decent enough to play most things at 1080p mini for $350. Sony and Microsoft can try to normalize >$600 all they want, but people aren't buying them. You can only squeeze the normal consolefag so hard.

Nobara was literally created and is maintained by the same dude that created Proton and nowadays works at Valve, newfag. Nobara is the "basically SteamOS", but without Arch faggotry. I've been having issues with Dolphin lately, specifically with the Nintendo Channel and Shopping Channel (using revival projects like WiiLink and WiiMart).
The Shopping Channel was working fine with WiiMart before, but it hasn't been working for a while now.
The Nintendo Channel works on an NTSC System Menu, but on my proper PAL dump (which I created specifically so the Shopping Channel would work), now it no longer works on that dump.

i5-2400? Did you mean i5-12400? Because going from an Xeon X5450 to a second-gen i5-2400 isn’t really worth the cost (especially since you’d also need a new motherboard etc.).

check the build guide on eugen;
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Computer_specifications#x86_(recommended)

As you can see;
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Computer_specifications#Recommended_Specifications

pretty much every emulator is heavily CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound, so jumping to a much newer CPU makes a way bigger difference than the graphics card.

At this point, if you're on a low budget, aim for a ▰▰▱ level CPU;

This tracks in some instances, especially the early 2010s when games were an unholy trifecta of poorly multithreaded, ludicrously heavy on the few threads they had, and just poorly made in general. Splinter Cell: Conviction, Dark Souls, and Crysis immediately come to mind. I'd say we've gotten a hell of a lot better at leveraging CPUs, but these new engines are absolute overdrawing sloppa when it comes to the GPU. Old games on real engines from the likes of id and epic should run at a billion FPS on modern hardware though.

>>
>>546880039
> Who cares?
Quite a few people, actually. There are constant threads and comments (here and on other forums) from people who want to build a dedicated emulation PC and either aren’t very familiar with desktop hardware or have simply forgotten how things work. A quick reference chart saves everyone a lot of time.

>>546880162
> 1–3 bars is way too broad for anything after ≥7th gen. Arguably some cases in 6th.
The 1–3 bar range is intentionally reserved for genuinely low-end or very old hardware *x86-64 v2 (e.g., dual-core Sandy/Ivy Bridge with hyper-threading *2C/4T). I could have listed borderline cases like the i3-3240 or the AVX2-capable i3-4330, but as soon as you start including those 4C/4T chips (i5-4460, i3-6100, Ryzen 3 1200, etc.), the table balloons, loses clarity, and the whole “microarchitecture tier” idea falls apart. Practically all of those 4C/4T CPUs already perform far above the 1-3 bar level for emulation anyway.

There’s definitely room for improvement (plenty of it), so if anyone feels they can make a cleaner or more accurate version, please jump in and edit the table.
>>
>>546883605
I think "next-gen" (heavily GPU driven) emus honestly need to be judged per-game. Their respective wikis probably just need this.
>>
>>546883605
>There’s definitely room for improvement
(cont.) Like adding PC systems (Steam Deck, Steam Machines, etc.), switching the table to a vertical, more visually aesthetic format, and logically separating the x86-64-v3 4C/8T and 6C/12T entries so people can compare them more easily.

In Brandish the dark revenent you'll get to one of the last bosses and find you're doing practically no damage and you'll have no idea why. What you're supposed to do is use a talisman you might have found or may have missed 6 hours ago to increase your luck stat to do more damage. Nowhere in the game are you told what the talisman does, that a luck stat exists or that it effects damage. If you missed the item you would either have to backtrack six real life hours or the game is softlocked. This is why I'm a racist.

I’m not a computer guy, so I’ve got this question: why can’t my 10-year-old laptop run Dead or Alive at full speed? Beetle Mednafen barely touches 10 % GPU and 20 % CPU. Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Baroque fly at full speed no problem, but DoA and Burning Rangers crawl. I tried Ymir and it gets ~40 FPS, yet it eats literally double the resources for a 10 FPS boost.
Back when I bought this laptop in 2017, N64 emulation (Project64 1.7) was garbage, it “ran” but looked like absolute dogshit, and F-Zero GX on Dolphin was completely unplayable. Nowadays I can do N64 with paraLLEl at full speed (native res x2) and F-Zero GX at 1080p with 4x MSAA like it’s nothing. Eight years ago that was unthinkable on this hardware.
I know my rig is ancient (GTX 970M + i7-6700HQ), but I don't know why both Beetle and Ymir barely use any resources when running DOA. It feels like the emulator is just sitting there laughing at me instead of actually pushing the hardware.
At this point I’m seriously thinking about grabbing a real Saturn + Phoebe RDC before I ever buy a new laptop. Ymir is getting impressively good, though, so I just want to understand why the fuck DOA specifically refuses to use more than a fraction of what my old-ass machine has left.

Saturn emus, outside of absolute turd-loafs like YabaSanshiro and Kronos, don't leverage the GPU at all. They are software emulators that run on the CPU.
>he thinks every program uses all his threads evenly
Few gaming related things truly slam an 8+ threaded CPU 100% at all times.

>>546963619

Finally, I'd guess the high-res interlaced mode DOA uses is especially heavy.

>>546954060
Ah, got it, the i3-2400 is still perfectly fine for a ton of emulators.
That said, ▰▱▱ emus will run perfectly fine, but most ▰▰▱ (and especially ▰▰▰) emulators really want a CPU with at least 8~12 threads and a single-thread PassMark score of 2600~3500. So don’t expect the more demanding stuff to run flawlessly on an i3-2400, a lot of lighter games will still be totally playable though, as mentioned in the Notes section here:
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Computer_specifications#Recommended_Specifications

>>546961615
The i7-6700HQ should handle all ▰▱▱ emulators just fine, but for Saturn emulation ( especially with heavier emulators like Ymir or Mednafen) you really want something closer to ▰▰▱ level performance for the tougher games. The 6700HQ is quite a bit weaker than its desktop counterpart (the i7-6700K), and if your laptop has any thermal throttling (very common on older laptops), clocks will drop and single-thread performance suffers even more. Also keep in mind that Ymir is still a work-in-progress and can be unstable/buggy on its own. For Saturn, I’d strongly recommend trying SSF instead, it’s dramatically less demanding than Mednafen.

Now that I think of it, considering how many chips the Saturn consists of, couldn't it be parallelized fairly easily? Then again, I'd suppose one or two chips are actually taxing to emulate.
>>
>>546983780
I'm no expert, but from what I understand it's not as simple as just running each component on separate threads. Individual components expect certain timings, and getting the timings right while being on separate threads becomes much harder, or something like that.

I'm just noticing the craziest timing. It appears almost every retro-adjacent YTer has uploaded a "review" of the Analogue 3D at exactly the same time as each other. For better or worse, only men are capable of wasting so much time and talent on something like video game emulation. It may speak to the practicality of women, somewhat.
>>547030952
Dude, ALWAYS presume in emulation. Think about it. What woman have you met with the skill and passion for the medium to make something like this in her spare time? Their are female programmers, sure, lots of them. I think it's just a job to them, though.

Literally not me you are talking about fag, and if your interpretation of "made today" was that the remasters sucked, that's not what I meant at all. I went back to playing this game and was just struck by how good the visuals are, even if the quality is a bit low.
>>
>>547031231
No it is not at fucking all. How? How is doing a little math and writing mission-critical, practical, often simple code the same goddamn thing as using god-tier intellect/autism to crack a proprietary game machine in your spare time? It fucking isn't.

I shouldn't be surprised at this point. It also appears Big Blue's right again about Game Sack being a scumbag, because Shaun (in the same review, mind you) brings up a valid point.
>Where is mine? I bought the thing. I've been waiting through multiple different delays, and they send you one just to review it before they send it out to the paying customers. Where is MY Analogue 3D?
Then Joe snarkily replies and backpedals about its lack of upressing capabilities.
>Well, for everyone who pre-ordered one, they should be shipping now. And I just wanna let everyone know right now that this thing uses pixels. It doesn't render polygons in 4k like an emulator would. So, if that's what you're looking for, this is not for you.

Is there a universal recommended version to use? In 3 searched I've found 3 different "recommended" versions (17.0.1, 18.1.0, 19.0.1)

Depends on the emulator, recent ones(2 of them) can run games with 20.0.5 firmware and actually need it for recent releases, others you might as well keep with 19.0.1, but keeping some copies of 17 and 18 firmware version in case neither the 20 or the 19 version work is what most people recommend.

The prompt i used was:
"[insert shader code here]

Can you improve this RetroArch shader? The files i'm sending are official RetroArch guides that will be useful for you"
The files in question are annotated_passthru, SHADER_SPEC and README. it worked when i sent sharp-bilinear but didn't when i sent DDT and a few other smoothing shaders, i always got the error "Failed to reflect SPIR-V. Resource usage is inconsistent with expectations." And similar errors that had SPIR-V in it, i had the same errors on Claude and ChatGPT so it appears that LLMs try to use code that isn't compatible with the RetroArch shader setup

Do you fine tune each rom to maximize performance? I'm a handheld gamer and I saw someone in hhg talk about optimizing games for heat/battery life/fan noise instead of upscaling to 4k with a bunch of shaders. Do you care about efficiency at all?
>>
>>547271316
Hard GPU sync most certainly does not get you there, but it helps. In my experience you need a high end flat panel with VRR or a CRT + runahead + hard sync + transcoder, with one frame of run-ahead (cheating, but acceptable in my opinion) on either of those on top. I only match my MiSTer + CRT with the above displays/configs.
>>
>>547301916
That's what I've been telling the bozos over on /vr/ as well. Yes, like you say, Run-Ahead is technically cheating, but you're just not matching real hardware + CRT otherwise.

A shame because only 86Box is in active development now but the performance is ass compared to PCem
It shouldn't take a top-end 2025 CPU to emulate a 400MHz Pentium II from 1998
>>
>>547311000
We've been through this. PCem is faster largely because its core is just less developed and accurate, and because its latest stable version still targets 32-bit, which is a bit faster than 64-bit, whereas 86Box has dropped 32-bit builds. Maybe there's a world where Sarah didn't go nuts and stayed in the project and further weaponized her autism to make the new dynarec even faster, but I cannot imagine it becoming fast enough to make speed gains over 30% or so, and this assuming PCem's core stays at about its current level of accuracy.

Even 2025 CPUs struggle to fully emulate a 400 MHz Pentium II at full speed.
https://youtu.be/LGcplPoRqrs?t=208
https://youtu.be/sec5WMOjhCY
As you can see, emulation speed still drops from time to time due to I/O tasks, background processes, and other overhead.

Stick with the Celeron 300A, as EmuGen wiki's computer spec page says that's the practical limit for full-speed emulation even on something like a Ryzen 5 7500F, Zen 5, or 13600K+.
>>
>>547319978
pn top of that, we're still limited to the Voodoo 3. Not a single GPU with hardware-accelerated D3D7 is properly emulated yet, let alone D3D8, and with the current 86Box approach, D3D8 emulation still feels very far off.

I've been toying with it over the last week after I got bored of my NES emulator. Plain C + SDL.

That and perhaps the upscaling. Doesn't matter a whole lot until the thing is unlocked though.

ParaLLEl-RDP is an LLE plugin, and as such is incompatible with a general-purpose widescreen hack. Even GLideN64 doesn't let you use its widescreen hack when using it in LLE mode. It will, of course, support games that have a native anamorphic widescreen mode, such as DK64.

How does ShaderGlass compare to RA's windowcast?

It kinda sucks Azahar dropped how it did because since it has the Borked dev ceased doing much of anything. He worked on Borked on his own profile but seemingly has moved on to work on android slop instead. Azahar should've been delayed or just died before existing and this wouldn't have happened, Borked seemed to have been the only fork making progress on fixing the renderer at least.

latest versions of RPCS3 have become extremely unstable and crash constantly (like Xenia). Aside from Dolphin/Wii, seventh-gen console emulation is still a complete crash-fest.
>>
Another day another rpcs3 regression.

Anybody else not getting the hype about genesis md+ or msu-md stuff? I just don't see the point and emulating them with retroarch doesn't really work too well.
It is not really a straight up upgrade but a different experience compared to the original sound.

why is mgs4 running like dogshit

Because rpcs3 is pure shit and you fell for "it is usable" meme.

https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Sega_Genesis_emulators#:~:text=Homebrew%20modes

"Currently, only Genesis Plus GX supports both modes as mentioned here, while Kega Fusion supports games that can only run in MSU-MD mode. irixxxx's fork of PicoDrive is also starting to add support for MD+."
