The problem with IDW Shadow isn't that he's mean, it's that he's stupid. 06 is the only Sonic game where Shadow is never "mean" and that's if you ignore the things he says during gameplay. Shadow belittling people is consistent. IDW didn't do anything wrong in that respect. People just don't like it because it undermines the fanfiction version of him who has "matured".

I remember as a kid I really liked watching "High School Musical" and that series had six main characters it always presented as the main characters. But only five of them are actually important throughout all the movies, because one girl only exists to be one guy's girlfriend and one girl's best friend. She has no real link to the main lead guy, and thus never gets her own "song" in this musical series where everyone sings all the time. That Daisy Duck syndrome is not a problem with the character's innate conception, it's purely in execution. Like, Rouge's appearance in Sonic Prime doesn't make her a bad character or anything in general, that is purely a misuse of the character. All the characters need is to be used and executed properly by competent writers and such.

The only reason that story has not developed past the Adventure games is because Tails has largely not had his own "story" at all past that era. Now, obviously Sonic isn't gonna stay dead in this series. But, Robin already outlines how this isn't necessary. It's not even about becoming "Nightwing" in and of itself, it's about the path that led to that. All Tails needs to grow beyond Sonic at all, in his own way, is to simply have his own cast of characters centered around him. Characters like Cosmo and Speedy. Tails needs them, and others like that, in the mainline modern game canon and stuff, to highlight his own identity and role beyond simply following Sonic. All while still following Sonic, so the "brand" doesn't have to change at all. This requires the simple act of giving Tails more of his own side stories in general.

Sonic Heroes had Tails on Team Sonic with Knuckles, while Amy had her own separate team as a result. Genesis Trio nostalgia means Tails and Knuckles are automatically grouped with Sonic, and that was the foundation for the entire game. "Team Rose" is a result of "okay, now what do we do with Amy...?" because the default for her is "follow Sonic", so now she has to have her own separate team away from Sonic. Everything I say about how Tails needs his own team, Amy already had that in Sonic Heroes.
