If you go into the display tab at your pause menu and scroll down, you have contrast, brightness, saturation and gamma sliders.

Your gamma is probably too low. Nights are supposed to be dark, but not a solid black screen with only your light barely lighting half a foot in front of you.

Not just stashes and A-life, but, IIRC, they've done things like adjust repair/upgrade prices, lowered mutant HP and added mutant parts + mutant part quests, and they did a small rebalance of artifact prices. As well as lots of enemy AI changes so they don't just spam grenades, and can't see you through environmental stuff as much.

On my first playthrough right now, but it really does seem like a pretty well-made game, it has that stalker soul. Grinding radial quests is much more satisfying than in any other stalkan game I've played, due to the respect mechanic. Allies in locations asking you to come and help can get a bit annoying, but it usually happens like once per hour or so for me, so it isn't awful. I somewhat regret putting the game off for so long (like 8-9 years already, not kidding) simply due to hearing a lot of negative comments. Maybe some of them are right, but the game overall seems to be very good.

Clear Sky was my first stalker game. I had the first release of it on disc so I think it was the unpatched version.

And boy was it buggy.
The fun part was that I had no idea what was part of the game, or buggy AI behavior so it added to the "cursed" atmosphere.
I havent played it since, but I assume that the steam version is up to date and most of the biggest issues are patched.

Raytrace dithering. The cost of having global illumination in indoor environments as your rig usually has to compute lighting from all visible surfaces, which in turn means that the amount global illumination sources indoors (especially walled and multiple sourced areas) would completely tank the performance. A usual way to counteract this is offloading the lighting out of the GPU pipeline into a mesh of dithered surfaces which are out of player view (which you see in the picture as the grainy, monochromatic walls). Same for me, I bought the disc after a friend told me about it, and I got obsessed with Chernobyl history. Found SoC soon after and played that to death too. Most humorously when CoP released in stores I bought that too, but I was not informed on release order, so when I first booted the game up I was totally underwhelmed by the graphics. How ugly it was compared to CS! And how casualised too! Starting with a machine gun and a sunrise suit, what the hell. So I promptly shut the game down and didn't touch it for a couple of years.

It's likely because i'm not using the 2k version of the UI (which looks less dogshit on high resolutions) and i think the cursor is largely a downgrade from version 1.31 which is kind of silly. Hopefully there's some tweaks to the overall GUI elements, there was some buzz about Drako likely making the UI much more customizable as the Zona GUI version is updated in 1.34

I've got nothing against any of the trilogy vanilla boars. It's the Anomaly versions that have a ton of HP, hit like a truck and usually come in either pairs or a small pack (between 4-6) so they're notoriously tough. Grenades work the best, but usually the worst part about boars is that unless you spot them first, you're getting charged down mercilessly and you've got to find higher ground they can't access or hope you invested in quick release and outrun them. I've taken to trying to get as much Rupture Res. on most outfits whenever i can. Solely because i'd rather not have my leg artery nicked each time i'm caught in a bad position. Fuck boars.

You mistake hunger penalties for starvation. You can be hungry, but at worst you'll get a tiny penalty to your stamina. Dehydration settles in much quicker and will kill in a very short time. Usually if you fiddle around with the settings you'll find a sweet spot where you're usually fine eating some Heinz Beans once or twice a day to stave off penalties, even if you chug anti-rads and meds like a madman. It's the lack of sleep or water that'll turn fatal very quickly.

the only significant difference master difficulty makes is that electric anomalies are still killing me in one hit and grav anomalies have for most of the game until I filled the physical resistance bar, and mutants that knock you down will probably kill you before you get up again (especially bloodsuckers, very cool)
And I don't see any significant "a life" change. Most spawns are still focussed on points of interest and noticeably limited range. Beyond seeing some ward guys hang out in the boiler house in the lesser zone, I haven't seen anything different. Maybe it's more significant after SIRCAA events

Play with the Unlimited Mod, it removes 99% of the boxes everywhere and randomizes all loot so you can't jump to the Cooling Towers for an exo, but can still find great random loot like a full durability suit on some dead guy. You will genuinely cum when you find a single medkit lying somewhere in the wild. And it makes stashes worthwhile to chase, you find encrypted PDA's with categorized loot and varying rarity. It also does a good job of balancing the economy, as I do think about buying a medkit with my limited funds when you don't have an infinite stash of them. The only bad thing the mod does is nerf detectors to make artifact hunting a pain, but I edited the .cfg to bring them back to vanilla and it's fine. I've been enjoying my 2nd playthrough with a lot and most early game, with most of garbage, I had to tough it out with an armored bandit suit since I couldn't find anything else, until finding a Marauder at decent condition on some corpse, while still having only basic SMGs and shotguns while going into Wild Island, you really need to work for your loot.
And I disagree on the no-alife, it is much, much better than it was before and squads do travel. I once got jumped by 2 bloodsuckers in the Detention Center and died, when reloading (since Expedition so had to load from base), I ignored it and went straight to Wild Island, and learned they actually traveled from there so they spawned somewhere else. And very often I can see someone patrolling somewhere and spot then beforehand instead of them spawning 10 meters behind me like it was in 1.0 and 1.1. They are definitely still some static spawns like Bandits occupying the boilers north-west of Zalisya ad infinitum, but there is an actual simulation on top of it with squads traveling across the zone.

I once saw a pack of boars literally kill a Pseudogiant. I had dumped a couple mags of Saiga shots into it before they arrived but a huge pack of like 8 Boars was able to drop it and have 3 survivors.

It's fun. 3's story was already a huge improvement over Anthony Burchlands not a high bar to beat, even with all the turd farmer jokes. It's still got cringey/stupid jokes and writing, but manages to act a lot more serious. It also helps that at least by the point I've gotten to, the only returning characters are craptrap, Marcus (intro voiceover only), and the duo of Zane (weapon vending machines) and Zed (meds), so it's a breath of fresh air with new idiots.
The mercenary day event kind of sort of "ruined" it in the way 3's TVHM did, where the legendaries you can buy with levelup points kind of make it pointless to bother trying to use anything but a legendary. Granted, hard mode is practically TVHM already, with nearly every enemy scaling to your level and only early game skag-replacements seeming to cap at level 17.
Also, they got rid of the QOL feature 3 had where you could make it automatically trash items of the designated rarity or lower for instant money, so you're stuck either setting minimum values in your head like the old days or dropping a bunch of shit every time you get a loot drop.
It lost a few other nice things from 3. 3's more linear nature apparently made it easier for them to do things like Carnivora (which was literally a recreation of what Baron Flynt's crawler in BL1 was SUPPOSED to do before they gutted the entire game to change the art style), and we're back to AR sucking dick unless they're single-fire. Most of the manufacturers don't exist anymore or have been downgraded to "licensed parts" cameos. I think Dahl is Daedelus now, and Tediore is apparently even more dystopian than the other manufacturers because they threaten Rafa with remote termination if he tries to run off. The cool viking guy is apparently a fag.

Open Xray doesn't have a googolplex of reflective surfaces that all need to calculated for reflections each and every time something is in the player's view. Instead it achieves mostly the same results with a Raytracing adjacent SSPTGI framework and smart use of specular materials and global illumination. On the flipside, the usage of volumetric lighting and an engine that practically runs on hopium, it's still very computing intensive when it comes to multiple lighting sources (Rostok night time flashlights), but considering the scope of the other textures and environments being practically a mash of very budget sized pre-2010 textures Open Xray has an advantage in being able to run a very impressive array of DX11 features without requiring a jet engine and a GPU the size of a brick.

And to elaborate on the "different ending" thing a little: The game has two pretty distinct paths through the main quest that fracture off into a half dozen endings. So you'll always probably want to do 2 playthroughs minimum just to see the Ward or Spark routes and see all the different stuff.
