As I've been going through another playthrough in Act 1, I've started to notice that somes of the companions aren't much better than Hirelings or Custom Companions when it comes to doing things after a while. Sure they may have some interactions here and there, but they don't do much after a certain point. Namely Wyll and Karlach. Have any of you felt the same way before?

I recruited both Wyll and Karlach right before the Goblin Camp so they sat out that one, but they were with me all through the Underdark. I'm playing a refreshing Thrower build with Karlach whose centerpiece (Returning Pike) is sold by the Goblin Trader, so that was needed for her to become a bright spot in our party anyways. The same moment for Wyll comes in Act 2 with the Potent Robe and maybe the Sentinel Shield. With the 18 DEX gloves that's +7 Initiate without (!) Alert and 20 AC if you took the Mage Armour Invocation and corrected his DEX to 14. Finish it with some Arcane Synergy stuff and he's a beast. Aside from that Wyll quickly established himself as my merchant, as I'm not playing a CHA class and Trader Attitude is tied to characters. So that's something he's been doing for a while except now he gets to stay in the party after bartering. one of my favorite things about shadowheart's writer is that he's not afraid of making shadowheart & halsin question the decisions of our character and that we get to ask them how much they like us and reminisce about events they approve of or not, halsin wouldn't have been that bad if they gave him more stuff to react to but alas the team ran out of time, I definitely think that this is the right formula to design reactive companions
“Reactive” is the companion reacting and speaking about your decision in real time. Having the option to ask a companion NPC “How do you think about me?(what level is my approval?) to gauge companion affinity is neither reactive or useful. In game, you can repeat the question to the companion who then has one line for each approval level(of which there like 3) which causes the whole system to feel stupid and out of place, especially when only 2 companions have the option
