He may have lost but I am still glad Masquerade Ball made it so competitive. Against the current running best horse of the year too. The fact that it wasn't a blow out should show Masquerade Ball's caliber too, despite the loss. May Duramente's bloodline continue to prosper.

He's at 24th place, it's going to be rough. But this JC had an insanely fast pace, so I can see a few runners from this race dropping the Arima to recover. Maybe cut out any other Sunday runners too, since Sunday's probably going to want to avoid cannibalizing their own team with Regaleira running.

Tbf, I think Masba was only ever going to Arima if he won the JC. Given how fragile the other dura spawns minus taiho are I'd rather have them be more cautious with him. Wouldn't be surprised if they're banking on Masba to take over Dura's mantle at SSS, since Taiho is at Lux Stud
>>
>>548402573
I had complete faith that Masba could take the JC this year.
Heck, if it weren't for Terra this race would have been completely different. Even towards the very end I feel like Lemaire could have taken the nose going further inside if he wasn't being blocked by Terra.
>>
>>548401875
It doesn't need to restrain her, just be enough so that she doesn't wander off.
>>
>>548381171
City of Troy co-HotY 2024 "lost" in the epsom derby to a jockeyless horse. He coincidently also beat Calandagan(and Durezza) quite easily last year in the Juddmonte International Stakes. It is really a big advantage
>>
>>548402972
I feel somewhat the same way. If Masba was on the outside and Calandagan on the inside I think Masba would've won(copesen). Masba seemed to be ahead of Calandagan until Terra veered closer and then Calandagan passed him. Maybe he ran out of gass or maybe Lememe was being cautious. The results are what they are in the end.
>>

>>
>>548375498
Even if Calandagan's team declares for Arima, the result wouldn't factor into his rating anymore, given that ifha ranking is from Dec-Nov. His Arima result would factor into his ranking next year. JC is actually the last race affecting the final ranking so it's pretty much set that Calandagan is HotY(If it wasn't clear already).

Shame Calandagan is a gelding because I highly disapprove of the castration practice since it contradicts the idea that horse racing is a blood sport by preventing male horses from passing on their blood to their children and future descendants.

It makes me sadly think that had Dream Journey, Gold Ship, Orfevre, and Stay Gold been born in Europe, Aga Khan would have gelded every male member of Stay Gold's family or worse, geld Stay Gold and prevent Stay Gold from having children like Gold Ship and Orfevre

I don't even want to gamble though. I just like the drama. Surely it's just because the game bgm is overlayed on this video, right? Horse racing isn't actually exciting...
>>
>>548425978
You don’t need to gamble. Once you realize that every race is a collision of different narratives, your curiosity starts getting the better of your head and it makes you wonder about their journeys. Uma has done a very good job translating each individual perspective to make them understandable to the player, hence the uma-keiba pipeline:

Since Calandagan is a gelding, Japan will likely purchase Calandagan's 13 year old father, Gleneagles, from Coolmore Ireland or Calandagan's 11 year old mother, Calayana, from Aga Khan. Coolmore is more likely to sell their Irish horse to Japan, though, compared to Aga Khan selling his French mare, since Coolmore has a deeper, longer relationship with Japan.

I believe Deep Impact was the only recent Japanese horse in history that immediately won the Japan Cup after participating in the Arc de Triomphe. In hindsight, Croix du Nord and Danon Decile should have skipped the Japan Cup in order to fully rest for the Arima Kinen because they clearly have slower recovery rates compared to the famous Deep Impact.
>>
Durezza was scratched from the Japan Cup but now that all of his rivals have tired themselves out from the Japan Cup, what are the chances of Durezza winning the Arima Kinen?
>>
>>548449179
Sunday probably wants Regaleira to get that double Arima win so maybe that’s why they chose JC over Arima for Croix so there’s less competition from their own horses and to give him more time to rest for next year. Just a guess though
>>
>>548449179
Titleholder was completely burned out from the Arc de Triomphe. Had he not gone to the Arc de Triomphe, he definitely could have won more G1 races in Japan, which is why I agree that Croix du Nord should have skipped the Japan Cup instead of suddenly deciding to enter the Japan Cup like 4 days before the deadline.
>>
Pretend the exact same race horses participated in the Breeders Cup and Admire Terra ditched his jockey in the exact same scenario as what happened in the Japan Cup. Would American stewards have immediately cancelled the race due to Admire Terra becoming a dangerous runaway horse?

After all, I recently heard that an American horse race in Louisiana on November 2025, was declared a no contest after an ambulance drove onto the track the wrong way toward oncoming horses while the race was in progress. Taking this into consideration, would American stewards have declared the entire race a no contest because of runaway Admire Terra being as dangerous as a runaway ambulance driving on the wrong side of the track?
>>
>>548451171
not sure exactly about the specific rules but it looks like the race isn't entirely written off as no contest for a rakuba happening in burgerland either. the ambulance thing seems different because that's a fuckhuge dangerous obstacle much bigger than a hors going literally against the race direction and unlike rakuba which is kind of a shit-happens occasion the ambulance is much more clearly a preventable fuckup caused by someone else
>>
>>548451171
They have outrider to catch loose horses
>>
>>548451171
Horses ditching their jockeys and running wild isn't an extremely rare event in horse racing anywhere in the world. It's chaotic and occasionally dangerous, but something that's expected to happen sometimes. An ambulance driving head-on into the horses in the middle of the race isn't something that anyone could expect to happen ever.

Gleneagles' stud fee used to be $60,000 and fell to $15,000 before jumping back up to $20,000 due to Calandagan's results in 2025. What this indicates to Coolmore is that Ireland is severely lacking mares that are genetically compatible with Gleneagles so selling Gleneagles to Japan makes more financial sense from a breeding perspective.

>>
>>548461676
Forgot to add that Calandagan's mother is French so Gleneagles' most successful son was born from a foreign French mother instead of a native Irish mother. And if Coolmore sells Gleneagles to Japan, he would gain access to many Japanese mothers not available in Ireland, that hopefully would create a Japanese version of Calandagan but with intact testicles this time around.

Croix is definitely not washed. However, I think it's clear he's not the next coming of Eclair like people saying he was going to be(Especially when he won the Tokyo Sports Nisai Hai Stakes G2 that Eclair also won.) He's probably going to be a contender for the best Japanese horse next year. Hope they don't send him to l'Arc again, since he's clearly too heavy for the track there.
>>
>>548461841
It's more like his growth was at a standstill going to Arc. So he's at the same level as he was when he won the Derby but Masq continued his growth as normal since he didn't go overseas. Just has to catch up for those few months he lost.

Many horse owners who adopt retired race horses often change the horse's name to something else as well, which makes tracking retired race horses even more difficult.

Aye. Slightly related, but it's nice to know that there are some people that just adopt retired race horse as a family pet. I remember reading a story somewhere of a journalist who went looking for a retired GII~III winner and he found the horse just living peacefully in some guy's backyard along with some dogs.
>>
>>548466117
You should be more bummed about Tony Bin's early death at 16 years old, since he was the leading sire in Japan before Sunday Silence came along and Tony Bin's children are the true rivals to Sunday Silence's children.
>>
>>548467448
I like the entire Dura family. Hopefully we'll get Tony bin in Uma someday...
>>
>>548468084
And from heart failure, too. Poor guy. We could have had a more long standing bloodline rivalry between the Tony Bin and SS spawns. Brian's Time's sireline is also extinct from central, which is sad too. Honestly, Sundayman and then Pui were way too dominant for the industry.
>>
>>548468084
Tony Bin's grandson, Heart's Cry, should have been sent to the Arc de Triomphe instead of Deep Impact or both horses should have attempted the Arc de Triomphe together.

Smaller Japanese breeding farms did try to resist the Silent Sunday takeover of their country but the early death of Narita Brian and poor purchases of unsuccessful European stallions made them eventually lose the war against Silent Sunday.

Aidan O'Brien should not have pulled out of the Japan Cup because the Irish would definitely have made sure to prevent Calandagan from winning the race by utilizing his infamous rabbit tactic in order to exhaust Calandagan. For example, Los Angeles was originally intended to be the rabbit for Minnie Hauk during the 2025 Arc de Triomphe and it is very likely he or Queenstown would have played the same role as rabbit in the Japan Cup and specifically target Calandagan.

>On November 12th the JRA announced that three of the four overseas horses previously confirmed for the Japan Cup-Goliath from the Francis Graffard yard in France, and Aidan O'Brien's Los Angeles and Queenstown from Ireland-will not travel to Japan.
>>
>>548484380

>>
>>548484564
Aidan O'Brien has never won the Japan Cup before so it would be in his full interest to prevent Aga Khan from winning the Japan Cup before he could do it, himself. Just imagine Los Angeles and Queenstown blocking Calandagan while Admire Terra blocks Croix du Nord, Masquerade Ball would have had no rivals to the finish line and would easily win the Japan Cup.

Calandagan is a gelding and therefore, a genetic dead end. Forever Young is a future stallion who needs to pass on his genes to the next generation of race horses.

Calandagan's current existence is 100% human ego while Forever Young's current existence is 50% human ego because his owner is not denying Mother Nature and plans to have Forever Young breed.

I have to say I am quite disappointed in the Aga Khan family because I just visited all their social media accounts and none of them uploaded any photos of the JRA staff handing them the Japan Cup prizes. Instead, they only uploaded a photo of the Irish Ambassador to Japan handing them a trophy. Is the Khan family actually racist toward the Japanese?
>>

Huh, actually naturalized into a burger. That's new. I guess he'll also ride in Tokyo Daishoten, then?

>>
>>548594836
I am not joking. If the Age Khan family never labeled their photo album on Facebook, The Japan Cup, you would never know they were in Japan because 99% of their Japan Cup photos do not show any Japanese person and the only Japan Cup award presenter they featured in their photo album was the white Irish ambassador. They completely ignored all the JRA upper management and Japanese celebrities like baseball pro Ichiro Suzuki. Sorry to say this but I now rather Coolmore Stud win the Japan Cup than the racist Aga Khan Stable.

hmmmmmm nyo. Most likely not at least. The most hyped 2yo entering his classic year recently was probably Croix and he couldn't do it. This 2yo crop don't seem to have any hons that looks far above the rest, but you never know. Triple Crowns seem to come around around once every 10 yearish in Japan excluding Mr CBT into Shonbori and Pui into orfe. Japan has been pumping out triple tiara's recently though (Ai into Tact into ojou). Also interestingly every triple crown winner made it into HoF, but Still, Tact, Apapane, and Ojou most likely won't make it into the HoF.
>>

Are we overestimating how conservative the other jockeys raced around Terra? I know they probably weren't keen to spook him, but he ran with such wisdom and vision, I think any of the jockeys would have felt okay at least progressing up past him. He wasn't behaving particularly erratically even when he went from outside of the pack to towards the front.
>>
>>548616180
We only know that now after the fact. No need to take such a huge risk during the time especially since it was Croix (who is 3 years old) and Tastiera next to him. Croix still has at least a year or 2 ahead of him for his career.
>>
>>548616180
problem is that Terra run without ningen.
>>
>>548613090
>More outsider sire appear

Shadai has stopped buying stallions after too many expensive disappointments like War Emblem. They are no longer looking for the next Sunday Silence. Instead, Northern Farm and Shadai are buying lots of foreign mares from America, Australia, and Europe. The top priority right now is to dilute the thick Deep Impact blood in Japan with foreigner blood from foreign mares.
>>
>>548616180
Wild hors is unpredictable and dangerous no matter what. Kitamura made a good judgement pulling Croix back to avoid any collisions or potential accidents even if it did cost him a better spot in the race. Better safe than sorry especially since Croix is so young still
>>
>>548615747
>gelding
tbf blame jra on this one (allowing gelding hors to participate on Japan cup). Anyway, even If their gelding won the race. I expect more imported Aga khan hors in japan after this.

That job belong on darley japan (Godolphin). Just look they purchase palace malice last year.
Relevant link :
https://x.com/Scat_Dsk/status/1994781829719847106?s=20.
Translation :
So far, Pakapaka Farm has purchased 12 foals in Europe and the US. For the past two years, they have only purchased from Tattersalls, but this year, as in 2020, they have also made significant purchases from American buyers, including Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton. The horses will not be offered for sale by the club, but will be owned under Godolphin Japan's name.
>>
>>548616712
Croix was not allowed to go all out in the Japan Cup because he was blocked by Admire Terra which is a shame, since he is a famous late surger like Deep Impact in the final straight. We saw Croix beginning to accelerate but then his jockey pulled up his reigns and stopped Croix from passing Admire Terra
>>
>>548615747
>not understanding Yurop mentality
Fact is, if Calandagan had his balls intact, he wouldn't even *be* here.
Instead he'd be retired straight to stud right after the Champion's Stakes.

It's precisely *because* geldings don't need to worry about muh stud value that they can afford to run in Japan in the first place.
Auguste Rodin, Charyn and iirc Fantastic Moon all have connections to Japan in one way or another, while Goliath is a Gelding.

It's truly a shame, I would have liked to see what it would have been like if he was allowed to just do his final spurt normally. I'm seeing Kitamura get a lot of hate and criticism too and people hoping he gets replaced by C. Demuro for the Saudi expedition which sucks cuz all he did was protect the horse and didn't even give him a bad ride in general, still finishing in 4th despite it all
>>
>>548616836
Calandagan is likely the first ever horse of the year who will never become a breeding stallion. Every past horse of the year has successfully reproduced

From browsing netkeiba, X (twitter), and youtube, I get the sense that Kawada is getting the most hate after the Japan Cup. Croix fans are pissed at him, Admire Terra fans saying Kawada should retire and go work at a grocery store, general keiba fans saying Yutaka Take should have participated in order to defend the Japan Cup

I looked up Calandagan's siblings race records and they were pretty bad. Calandagan's mother only has 4 children in total. Japan should consider buying Calandagan's father rather than his siblings.

>Lost against by chinese mongolian owner (Yulong group)
Fucking hell
>>
>>548618464
That's because they don't give horse of the year to geldings. They simply don't, and that's on purpose. There's way too much stud value attached to it, and they're in the pockets of the breeders. Calandagan could bring Jesus back and they still wouldn't give it to him.
>>
>>548619036
Strange. I just see most comments memeing about Kawada shogi pose, people worried about the MasBall and Tosaki, and a lot of people saying that this was one hell of a memorable JC.
It's dumb to blame anyone this race anyway. It's not like Kawada threw the race intentionally, the guy was on edge even before the race. Kitamura made the right choice to protect Croix instead of risking an accident with Terra. MasBall is also a moody little fuck who decided to go punch Decile and messed up two more jockies at the end.
>>548619538
This guy's also correct. You have those gambling addict throwing blames left and right after every race.
It's horse racing, anything could happen when you're dealing with temperamental big dogs running at full speed. You should just be happy no one was seriously injured after that.
>>
>>548619926
They probably want his sister because they could just breed her with local stallion if she can't race.
>>
>>548620409

>>
>>548620496
This is probably the one time IFHA can't weasel their way out of giving it to a gelding.
Ombudsman, Daryz, and Fraud of Gold are already done with their seasons, and Calandagan did beat Ombudsman fair and square.
It'll be bullshit if IFHA pulled any of those ratings upwards just to deny Calandagan his dub.

Yulong is aussie based
>>
>>548619084
Buying sisters of famous horses is not a guarantee of success. For example, Japan purchased Horlicks' younger half-sister, Carnival, and none of her children were successful race horses.

Carnival: Horlicks' younger half-sister (by the stallion Racing Is Fun), foaled later in the 1980s. She had a less stellar career than her sister but did win a race impressively on the same day Horlicks won a $1 million race at Ellerslie Racecourse in New Zealand. Carnival was eventually sold to Japan for a significant sum, following in her famous sister's hoofprints

Seeing that Calandagan's mother seemed to stop making babies after popping out 4 of them without the Aga Khan stables providing an explanation, it may be good that Japan failed to buy Calandagan's sister because it appears the female members of the Calandagan family either have fertility issues or difficult childbirths.

Yulong has runners in HK, but not many. Their focus is still on Australia imo.

As for racing in the mainland, it's only allowed somewhat recently so it's still a new thing there. Both quality+recognition-wise it'll take a while for the scene there to match Hong Kong's.

HK did plan on expanding their racing over to their ChongHua tracen, but betting is probably still limited to HK.
(I doubt betting will be allowed in China, would be a whole other can of worms)

Speaking of betting, there was a PSA on Tokyo racecourse main race vision screen about how sports betting and gambling are absolutely illegal in Japan and how it'll ruin your life. Very funny that they decided to play that at a racecourse.
>>
>>548623930
>As for racing in the mainland, it's only allowed somewhat recently so it's still a new thing there.
Didn't they buy Ardan to serve as a stallion there way back in 2000? It can't be that recent.
>>
>>548624208
That one's more about online casinos and bookies, since gambling in Japan's centralized.

HK is the same, but at least most important foreign races are available for betting compared to JRA's *very* limited list.

>>548624286
It's all relative. When the HKJC is over 140 years old, 25 years isn't that long.

Nox was pulled from his racing career before he fully blossomed, so a lot of keiba ojisans were left hanging. Masball might be the closest, but those Dura legs might be kicking in.

Calandagan maybe, but RW and KYR have to be gelded because they run in HK and there's no ground for farms and the horses are in close proximity of eachother. That's also why when hk horses retire they leave the country (G60 retired to Northern Farm IIRC.) HKJC being allowed to venture business into mainland China might mean they don't necessarily have to geld their horses anymore

Goliath has an excuse to be a gelding because he has an undesirable genetic health issue called stringhalt, also referred to as equine reflex hypertonia. Nobody would want stringhalt genes to be added to the race horse gene pool.

Stringhalt: It is generally considered a neurological condition where the nerves in the spinal cord don't work correctly, causing the muscles to overreact. It can also be caused by consuming certain toxic plants, such as flatweed.

The JRA should definitely ban future geldings from the Japan Cup, because it could start an undesirable gelding trend. We absolutely do not want any remaining Byerley Turk and Godolphin Arabian horses in the world to be gelded in order to imitate Calandagan's success.
