Tails was Sonic’s sidekick who was supposed to be so inspired by him that he would use Sonic’s example to grow into his own stronger and better person because of it. SA1 and 2 did this. He was ruined because of Sonic Team’s stupid decision after 06 to make Sonic the only playable character and their even stupider decision that the best way to accomplish this was to regress Tails into a cowardly tech geek exposition dump, starting in Unleashed and culminating with Forces. Frontiers acknowledged this was a mistake, but did nothing to actually reverse it. If they had just done the simple thing (given Tails his Adventure characterization), there would be zero problems.

The alternate playstyles gave feature creep to most of the 2000s games and the experimentation didn't help either. Sonic Adventure is a decent game with some weird quirks and bad ports. SA2 is fucking crap carried by it's story and Shadow's popularity. Nobody liked the treasure hunting or mech stages except people who grew up with it. Nobody is going to like them anymore. People getting into Sonic will never like them. SA2 would be the last passable Sonic game before colors came out. People try to force that Unleashed was good but it was really just polished. It wasn't a good game. The sun and moon medals made sure of that.
