I'm wondering if part of the fault lies with how they waited until the end of the arc to reveal what her issues were. We knew from the start that Yuuken is a himbo kendo-boss beloved leader airhead stoic nerd. We knew that Yuuta is fat and happy. We knew nothing about Yuuka until the second-to-last chapter and it was too little too late.
You know that Finding Nemo anecdote where the original plan was to keep the dad fish's motivation a secret until revealing it at the end? The end result was everybody hated him. By the time the tragic dead wife backstory came in it wasn't enough to compensate for 70 minutes of him pissing everyone off for no apparent reason. So they moved his backstory to the opening of the movie.
I think that might be what happened to Yuuka. She had zero motivation, zero personality, zero anything differentiating her from Deuce for 95% of the story and then it's revealed "actually she is struggling to defy gender roles" and it's like okay. Maybe you should have told us that. Or at least showed her doing literally anything, she is the only girl at a boys school, seems like there could have been plenty of opportunity.
That would've required changing the story and/or characters too much, though. At the end of the day they all have to stick to the script, and it left no room for a girl-boss character arc.
So there was none. There was no character at all. Savanaclaw arc could've been just Grim and it probably would've been a lot better.

yeah, this is the biggest one for me. they had all the buildup time to let her do something that tackles this issue but ended up squandering it. maybe it could've been with some random npcs or at the very least a soliloquy where she thinks about it when she has a quiet moment to herself

Yeah that's true. NPCs giving her shit for being both magicless and female, so double-whammy of not belonging there, or even not touching any any characters at all and just her by herself like "wow the men at this school treat me like I'm a person instead of adapting their personalities to the fact that I am a woman, how refreshing," but no, nothing. We also got none of Trey's "I am uncomfortable around women, actually," shyness, but that wasn't revealed until NBC last year so maybe the mangaka didn't know about it and he was hardly in it anyway.
People are so quick to yell misogyny when someone doesn't like Yuuka but come on, there isn't anything likeable about her. Tits do not a personality make.

Event so fun the only thing we have left to complain about is each other. Speaking of, saw a recent oc back and forth that was just a bunch of "yeah my oc is a lot like yours but she's even crazier" and "yeah that's a similar backstory to my oc but my oc's is even darker" and general dick wagging, it was fascinating, I felt like an anthropologist.

For a second there I had the thought that it would be neat to if Oda was in charge of Book 5 so we could see Vil in that art style. Then I remembered that she hasn't met a deadline since 2023.
