Don't tell anyone this but ascended gear, old relics that are good, new relics that may or may not be better, access to spears / soto weapons, and elite specs absolutely matter.

It's more or less a paywall vertical progress with some grind depending on what you need. The major difference being once you got a full ascended set for a spec you want it on and whatever the current good relic is, you're effectively done, and whatever difference some new relic or what have you over your current won't be some gorillion DPS increase.
...Except for the times it is before it gets nerfed.

It's mostly back end stuff for Steam compatibility, UI enhancements, and options tweaks to make the game more serviceable on modern hardware. The other bit is streamlining unlocking of content. The main game and all the expacs are just one big package now with the exception of things like the bonus mission pack, EoTN, the cosmetics, hero slots, etc. If you had an old GW1 account without expacs or missing ones they dumped the rest of them on you for free.

So when I make pugs for raids, I like to do other stuff (mirror farming, janthir chests, soto chests, maybe event stuff) while I wait instead of just standing around in the aerodrome.

Hybrid is best. and yes you will be using everything but your weapon a lot. However, for survivability you'll want to use spear's 3 and 5 skills and use exalted hammer almost immediately because it is pretty squishy without them.

1.) Hybrid = Strike AND Condi and viper is a 50/50 split between the two.
2.) Spear 3b has a life siphon equivalent to Mug for a really cheap ini cost. Spear 5 has an equally powerful heal on block. Exalted Hammer with Meticulous Custodian doubles as a second heal skill (over 6k AoE healing), and finally Draught with Relic of the Flock is a 3k heal with barrier and cleanse on a very short CD and a secondary 6k heal cleanse.

You can totally survive with a glass cannon setup in open world. Moreso than with the other specs.

How? Spear is the cheapest weapon to use and at least half the time you are spamming cannon and artifacts (which give you back initiative) throughout your rotation while your ini regens back anyway the entire time.

The damage difference between spear 2 and 3 are negligible when you consider that the stealth attack and life siphon are part of the 3 chain. You want Precision on condi builds with "inflict condi on crit" traits. Doesn't have much to do with the power damage. Some of them don't even have ICDs so you wanna get big crit chance to proc them constantly. Much better than more Power if you're condimaxxing.

Actually scratch that, I messed something up. Scourge does gain damage, but they can’t use a full suite and still end up only 10% better than vipers.

Condi soulbeast (the real one not the relabelled hybrid one on snowcrows) can use a full suite and also marginally favours precision over power but still would only be 10% stronger than vipers.

Meanwhile guardian favours power and only gets about 5% more damage from a 3stat with power in it. I’ll have to look more closely at builds that use different runes because trappers seems to be a common optimisation with these attribute combinations.

The mech is too much of a wildcard to use the optimiser properly so I can’t easily compare it for you. The Recharging Teleport To Friend is very handy to get your characters around the world. Easy access to any meta/world boss that has a group on LFG, easy enough to ask someone in a lounge or city to taxi you somewhere too. Single use TP to Friend items are somewhat common, if you play a ton they'll eventually start stacking up but the recharging one is worth it if you have the gold/gems/shekels to spare. Try to get in the habit of looting someone's home instance every day though, you get a handful of every single LW currency + a ton of other mats.
