Hello anons, I've been working on a JRPG/eroge game. I have a question and I wonder if anyone went through something similar.
I can handle the coding fine but it's obviously the art who's my biggest bottleneck. The dream would be to hire artists do the assets for the project. I was thinking about going monk mode for a year or two, saving as much as possible and then look for artists. I'm studying art at the same time on the side but I highly doubt I would be able to make CGs good enough for the genre by myself.

Do you guys feel like this is reasonable plan? Anyone who went through something similar?

>>549548446
I am what you are trying to do, but two years later.

I made money and have been developing my own game for two years (i have money for other year).

My biggest piece of advice is to make the game as simple as possible.

In my case, I made the mistake of assuming that player statistics, different bullets, different enemies, creating a drag-and-drop system, a store, saving money, etc. were “basic” things for my game.

It's been two years, and I think it's going to be a complete failure.
I'm continuing because I hope to recover something, but I don't have high expectations.

And no, I have no idea how to make the art look good.
At least I've stopped feeling that my game has a remarkable visual appearance.

music theory is 99% shit you don't know.

Just learn how chords sound next to each other in the circle of fifths, and learn how intervals and modes sound.

Then learn basic EDM sound types like what is the bass, the drum kit, the lead, the SFX, the ambient and pad and pluck.

And then learn that you need to put 4 voices, 1 drum kit, 1 ambient / pad, 1 main lead, 1 counter lead, 1 chord, 1 pluck.

And then learn song structures, like what is an intro, what is a coda, what is a verse, bridge and chorus and solo.

The rest is just copy a lot the songs you like using some free MIDI.

And then compose a lot.

Pirated FL studio. Then essentially just downloaded a retarded amount of instruments and began by trying to recreate (by ear) some ancient game tracks, then did small spins on those, and ultimately a couple of bad original tracks.
Ended up making 5 decent tracks for my demo (no one complained about their inclusion, at least). Didn't spend a single second learning the fundamentals/theory.
>>
>>549556543
Literally all you need is a slip of paper to go above the keys. These charts look more complex than they need, but it's just the same finger positions moving up and down the keyboard. I saw someone demonstrate it on a Youtube short, I should have saved it.

liking metal as a musiclet indie dev is hell because no DAW recreates chainsaw guitar well.
there's no way my rythmlet autist ass is learning music theory, finding a boss-hm2, all the other shit, a guitar, and actually playing it well. could make another whole 2 games in the time that'd take to sound even decent.

My feedback is, in build up parts like 2:23, it's kinda boring. I don't know how to describe it. The build up just isn't interesting, maybe it doesn't have enough going on. There's many songs that make long build ups interesting and entertaining to listen to, I think inherently a long build up should be a bit ambient? I'm a musiclet though so don't take my word for it.

Will Americans even like my game if my writing is complex, intelligent, and inspired by greek philosophy and christian mystic thought?
For example I watched the movie crazy rich asians and I could predict is easily even from just the title to be honest, it's exactly like every love story about nepobabies. Dull and uninteresting the truth is princess bride mastered the romance genre so well it's impossible to name a better romance movie than princess bride. It was a perfect that didn't sacrifice itself for appeal and yet appealed to more people than movies that do.
And best of all it wasn't about nepobabies and actually the nepobabies were the bad guys just like real life. Perhaps I should put my project aside and try and make a work like princess bride.
Americans are stupid, but they probably like creme brulee. It has sugar fat, and I know it's not deep fried butter but it has class.

I think Unity would be a good bet. Godot could do most of it, but there's a higher probability you'd run into an arbitrary engine limitation when trying to emulate some particular graphical feature (the "Juan's way or the highway" phenomenon)

>finally get a hold of a second computer to try out multiplayer
>bugs
>simple fix to allow joining in multiplayer, only fixed client side since I didn't want to update it on the irritating to use laptop
>lobby appearing twice unlike before
>client spawned falling outside the desired play area
>client cannot move at all, only shoot weapon
>client jitters along the ground
>host somehow fell through the ground
>host aiming weapon not visible on client side
I-I think I might be done wth multiplayer but still need to accept it internally. I don't want a 3x increase to development time :(

Solo devs should make solo games
Simple as

i made my player too fast and now i can't design levels because everything has to accommodate zoom zoom retarded mobility

Good thing I am neither a solo dev nor do I make solo games. I have many frens, and I make games that I can play with my frens. That is why I'm GMI.

multiplayer is just really hard unless you're using unreal or something equivalent that has a networking solution built in desu.
For what it's worth though most of those things you listed seem fixable with some work.
>>
>>549585856
I always recommend Unreal to anyone trying to do simple bipedal focused multiplayer games.
Their built in character controller is good at network prediction and all that.
I think where Unreal falls apart is when you need shit like networked physics or vehicles. It basically requires a custom solution because their built in one does fuck all for prediction atm.
I think their new object agnostic network solution is in experimental atm so maybe it'll get good in the next year or two.

>It's literally shit that already have a function like gl + scale / translate / rotate.
That was the case back in the fixed function days. Actually wrangling opengl involves much more than that.
>>
>>549586331
But I want to use opengl 2.1, not whatever gay shit the "TECHBRO" comunity want to use.
>>
>>549586542
You should still use the gay shit (3.3) because you must. You don't really have a choice. It's the most supported version.

I'm using Unity, game is 2D and physic's based. I'm just exhausted with multiplayer and all the fine tuning it needs. I'm sure most of the gameplay bugs can be resolved. But having to run back and forth using a laptop just to debug is putting me off. It's not fast and something is broken so I'm going to have to try fixing it tomorrow.

I've heard Roblox is very easy for multiplayer and Unreal as you mentioned but idk on the scale of ease. As for jumping to Unreal, not at this point, I'm in need of a big break in either gamedev or elsewhere in my life. I just cannot afford to switch engines now. Might scope down (probably a flop without multiplayer), might project hop, idk right now. Thanks for reading my blog.

If you were going to make a VTMB style game, would you focus on a third or first person perspective?
I know the OG game has both but I feel like supporting both made the combat suffer in the original.

Proof that it's a hobby? Easy

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

It's annoying that this shitter latched onto this topic and was obsessed with it from the start because it is actually fascinating what happened, and tragic really. Cuffbust was probably the most tragic indie game thing I can recall this year. Such a huge example of a dev fizzling out on a game halfway through development and really just hating it by the end and wanting to be done with it asap and then they send it out into the woods to die like an unwanted child hansel and gretel style and it does just that, dies the very first night and then we literally don't hear from gavin about it afterwards.

Truly disturbing. Cuffbust had potential it could have been good, but it's creator despised it by the end and threw it off a cliff.

Am I insane in thinking that AI is the perfect use for graffiti?
You can pump out insane amounts of it to fill your scene and it doesn't need to be great because graffiti isn't either
