The whole point is the parasocial connection you develop for your units. Having bad dialogue is unironically more damaging than having no dialogue. With no dialogue you can headcanon like Etrian Odyssey, with bad dialogue you actively dislike the character. A character being an annoying retard saps any of the attachment you'd develop to your unique units, and Kaga viewed your parasocial connection to your units as the soul of Fire Emblem (which games like Awakening and Three Houses proved decisively.)
