finished the noah route. the most striking charm of henpri really is the dynamic directing. I have never seen a vn before where the characters and the background moved so much and are positioned always differently depending on the current scene to really give life to the characters. moving the "camera" makes even just viewing a background a lot more engaging. the constant effort they put into scene direction just makes other vn look rather lazy for not doing the same. it really made me rethink the term visual in visual novel. the comedy was also quite funny. i like the agressive humor, trying to make the reader laugh at all costs. the characters were also all very likable and interesting. just the story felt a bit too ridiculous at times. the whole finale with the exhibition day just felt ridiculous. all of drama just to simply fire two employees is way too overkill. they should have a different resolution for the route but whatever. guess I'll do chisato next

Honestly, Z.A.T.O. is a bit hard for me to get into. This is purely subjective, and not me turning some disinterest into a critique or anything, but the whole concept is just not that interesting. It signals for me to not take it seriously.1 - Immediate bully arc2 - The bully is the one singular male character shown so far and possibly only one in the game3 - The quiet/autistic MC is protected by a cool problem child girl4 - SOL but with a 'light mystery element' regarding a missing personsIt's unfair of me, but I mainly just think, if you can't think of anything more interesting than this, how am I supposed to feel any excitement for the rest of the game? The obvious comparison in aesthetics and more is Lain, but just look at that show, which starts with a suicide and more than a little intrigue regarding the internet, technology, etc. A dead classmate claiming to be alive on the internet is far more interesting than a generic missing persons on a plot and thematic level. And that show did not even need to force her getting bullied in school for drama. Not every quiet or weird person gets bullied relentlessly in school - overreliance on that trope just demonstrates an inability to think of anything interesting class dynamics. Not to mention that Lain has multiple prominent male characters, which I feel kind of shallow for me to hone in on, but due to bad personal experiences I have a reflexive distaste for Western OELVN culture which views men as antagonists, girls as the only people worth writing about or adoring, etc. This is unfair of me honestly but it's the vibe I'm getting - for my own tastes, I think the bully should have been a girl, or 1 non-bully male character should have been there (not that the author should have felt compelled to pander to me.) I think the philosophical moments of the game are neat so far, the author has some novel ideas, but everything surrounding them is just incredibly banal.

Basically, at least how it starts, is that it begins with the funeral of a high school student named Natsume who died for unknown reasons. Four of his friends go to his funeral, and you select one of them to follow in their own chapter (which takes place from their perspective). In each chapter they meet a being known as MAMIYA, which is some seemingly supernatural entity that appears to them in the guise of a child and knows everything about them, and gradually manipulates them using their psychological hangups and traumas to lead them to their death. In the second part of the game you start to play as Natsume himself, after his death, as he tries to stop MAMIYA and unravel the mystery of what it is and what's going on.

Natsume tries to restart the story, but instead of the original beginning, we see the meeting of four people grieving the death of Mamiya, the original one (not MAMIYA), and each of them perceived him as a completely different person even in life. I assume these are the four that become the MAMIYAs that torment the other characters in episode 1.

Some brief thoughts on Mamiya, specifically the character Minato. My initial evaluation of him was that he might be transgender and think of himself as a woman, but I don't think the game was going for something as simple as that. It's more like has a deep psychological hang-up about the bifurcation of gender itself into male and female. He engages in cross-dressing but before he kills himself he asks Mamiya is he was enough of a male. He has a nightmare where his cross-dressing gets exposed at school and there are pictures of him in which he has a female body. He has a strong aversion to pornography or even talking about sexual topics. He likes girls though and says that a girl is his type, but when she tries to have sex with him he basically has a panic attack and runs away. But he also stated that he wasn't a virgin (no other details were given). Also before he died he stated that he wished he could meet himself as a child again, because as a child the distinction between a boy and a girl wasn't as clear. But at the same time he also feels like he needs for things to be separated into clear categories so that he can find a way to fit in with other people. This was the most complicated character of the four in episode 1. Some of the writing made me wonder if he was molested as a child, but I'm not sure who would have done that, and I'm not sure if the story is going in that direction or not (not everything about these characters has been revealed so far), or if just having sex itself was a traumatic experience for him in some way. Hard to say.
