The reason that so many western fighting games (indie or otherwise) end up as a mess in terms of competition, balance, and design in general. A lot of them take heavy cues from Marvel vs Capcom or its derivatives. Think about it. Regardless of how Marvel is seen now, it was never designed as a competitive fighting game. It was a licensed game to promote a brand and mostly made for their western audience to have fun in as a casual game. It was never that big in Japan, relatively speaking. Don't get me wrong, there was definitely an audience and there were local arcade tournament for MVC2 in Japan without a doubt. But even on the JP wikis, they say that the competition is more serious in Japan. The first big national tournament for a Marvel game in Japan to my knowledge was Tougeki - Super Battle Opera 2012 (the final SBO) having an Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament. Other than that, you really don't hear that much about JP Marvel. That is not inherently bad, obviously, but I mean that the Marvel scene is mostly insular towards a few small pockets of westerners. The top players are usually from USA or Latin America. Meanwhile, the Versus game made for Japan, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, was ironically still more popular in America. At least Ultimate All Stars, the update, was. Vanilla TVC, Cross Generation of Heroes, has a niche following in Japan and it had national tournaments like SBO, but it was extremely busted and favored degenerate play (There are multiple practical OTG infinites like Kaijin no Soki super into Doronjo 2L spam, Doronjo can get a GUARANTEED incoming full combo on you by setting up her Naniwa Clutch command throw to hit at round start as soon as the new character comes in and there is absolutely zero counter play, Roll can OTG Hakushon Daimaō with basically no effort, Chun-Li unblockable assists, etc). It was never a big hit on the level of other Capcom games there like Street Fighter or even Vampire if I recall correctly.
So my point I'm trying to make is that Americans see that as the baseline for fighting games, take heavy cues from the Versus series, then are surprised their games end up too hectic and confusing for people to follow. Skullgirls has an audience, but it's far more niche than it would have been as a 1v1 game with not as many crazy interactions and resets and setups that are unreactable, I feel. And a lot of western indie fighters are like that, not just Skullgirls. 2XKO, Frostifre, Them's Fightin' Herds, and Duels of Fortune all take cues from Marvel. This would be like if every Japanese doujin game was based on Hokuto no Ken or Sengoku Basara X, fighting games that are extremely degenerate and have a niche in their communities, but just that. A niche, not something most people want to actually play. I don't hate Marvel or Hokuto no Ken or any of those games. (TvC was the first fighting game I ever played for more than 5 minutes and it holds a special place in my heart as such). But my point is that when every game is designed around being busted or a more toned down version of a busted game, it starts to get ridiculous, hard to follow, and sometimes even less fun to play.This would be like if some kid saw nothing but Gmod videos and GTA jetpack Rocket Launcher fights on YouTube all day and decided to make his fps nothing but that.
