dq is more consistent. ffs highs are really high but its lows are awfully low, even the worst dq is nowhere near as bad as the worst ff.
>>

INCREDIBLY flat

Just got Princess Cannock and damn, this girl is really behind. Did they really expect me to beat that bat so early? Dude was insanely strong.
>>

She catches up fast.
>>

>Did they really expect me to beat that bat so early?
No. They expect you to have completed the Alefgard storyline first.
>>
>>550050578
I'd say FF games are the one with the more steady quality. Playing older DQ games means worse menuing and towns are a slog. Final Fantasy most of them are so quick to play through until around the ps1 era but even there you're comparing them with DQ7 and it's dreadful pacing.
>>
>>550052030
Is it weird if I feel like Jade is the most pure of the XI girls? I can easily see Serena being tricked into sex and Veronica getting bombarded with compliments but Jade is such a hard arse that she has no time for me and flirting and sex and all other kinds.

Maybe if you're going by the post XIII games but before then the only shaky games are 2 and maybe pre-pixel 3. With Dragon Quest a good number of the games are love it or hate it.
>>
>>550060029
Any definition of "shaky" that includes any mainline DQ games surely has to include FFVIII, X-2 and XII. I wouldn't include any version of III though, that game's great.
>>
>>550059131
Idk personally, I find DQ to go
>1 sucks, 2 sucks, 3 is okay, 4 is great, 5 is okay, 6 is good, 7 is amazing, 8 is amazing, 9 is okay, 10 is great, 11 is amazing
While FF for me is
>1 sucks, 2 sucks, 3 is good, 4 is great, 5 is okay, 6 sucks, 7 is amazing, 8 sucks, 9 is great, 10 is amazing, 12 sucks, 13 sucks, 14 is good, 15 is okay
Both start rough, but DQ doesn't have a mainline release that sucks once you get past the NES era, meanwhile FF has stinkers in every era, and especially nowadays just releases pure garbage.

Also to clarify for my list on which games I prefer was moreso an overall list than just the oldest versions of the games, so looking at DQ1 and 2 vs FF1 and 2 for example, I would put the original versions on par with each other, really I'd rather not play any of those, but if we turn to remakes, I'd take any of the DQ1 and 2 remakes over any remakes of FF1 and 2.
>>
>>550061248
8 is fine. The levelling thing is weird but I find it one of the most amusing games writing wise. It's certainly not a bad experience. X-2 has great gameplay and is surprisingly down to earth and emotional when it wants to be but has a kinda shit story and overstays it's welcome, and XII is again a pretty fun game to play. I will say that I feel DQ does spinoff titles so much better tho. There's nothing on the level of kink as the monsters games.
>>
>>550061259
I kinda find the first games in both series to be way better than any of the later nes titles lol. They both have a very short and sweet feel to them. You can clear them on a good weekend and feel totally satisfied.
The snes era final fantasy games however are simply on a whole other level. 4 is truly timeless, 5 is bizarrely well balanced for its age to the point you still get four job fiesta runs to this day, and 6 is debatably the pinnacle of console rpg's. And that's every version of the games. They're all perfectly playable and have new stuff to offer. Whilst with dragon quest you either have the soulful but clunky originals or the rpgmaker ds remakes.
>>
>>550059340
Not until you rewrite history to retcon her corruption arc
Jade was the first girl I married out of the party, since she's the female with the most sexual compatibility with Hero. (See: Puff Buff, holding hands on first date)
>>
>>550059131
For me it's: (I haven't played DQ1-2 Remake yet)
FF1 > DQ1
FF2 > DQ2
FF3 < DQ3
FF4 < DQ4
FF5 = DQ5 (These are both my favovrite jrpgs so I can't pick between them. Surprisingly FFV is quite overlooked in the community it's crazy. People ignore the story just because of the job system it's annoying. It's how FF fans think of DQ when they play 5)
Haven't played DQ6 so can't compare
Haven't played DQ7 so can't compare (Is DQ7 PS1 intro that much longer than 3ds? I heard it's like 8 hours before you see your first battle but no way that's right)
FF8 < DQ8 (I like FF8 but holy shit was it messy, DQ8 was consistently good)
FF9 < DQ9
Haven't played 10 not really comparable so I'll say this instead for the rest
XVI > DQXI > XIII > XII > XV
>>
Jade is overrated.
Serena > Veronica > Jade > Gemma
It sucks how Gemma doesn't join you though. Marrying your childhood friend is cute and all but 5 minutes of screentime and then getting married whole freaking hours later is just ass lol. Biggest miss in DQ. And even taking the "other romances" doesn't even feel that good either since it barely feels like you're moving into a new chapter and I get it it's not suppose to be but that sucks.
>>
>>550063113
I don't get what's supposed to be "clunky" about the older DQ games at all. Plenty of other series have older entries that feel totally different and much worse, but old DQ is just... DQ. What's there to get hung up on?
>rpgmaker ds remakes
Even if you have awful taste and think the PS1/DS games look bad, they still don't look anything like rpgmaker games. The SFC games legitimately look more like rpgmaker games than the DS games do.
>>
>>550063541
>Is DQ7 PS1 intro that much longer than 3ds? I heard it's like 8 hours before you see your first battle but no way that's right)
It's more like two hours. 3DS cuts it down to roughly 30 minutes.
>>
>>550063541
>Is DQ7 PS1 intro that much longer than 3ds? I heard it's like 8 hours before you see your first battle but no way that's right
The intro is 2 hours at most if you talk to everyone and search everything. The ruins are designed with actual puzzles to solve, so if you get stuck there you could maybe add another half hour to your time.
>>
>>550063541
>XVI > DQXI
Now that's a red hot take.
>>
>>550063541
>I heard it's like 8 hours before you see your first battle but no way that's right
It's not. Anyone telling you the DW7 intro takes more than a couple hours is either genuinely retarded or hasn't played the game.
>>
>>550063698
For me its
Veronica > Gemma > Serena > Jade
I still married Gemma though.
>>
>>550063978
>>550064049
thanks i wanna give it a try but with 7R (kek can't believe I can say it) coming so soon, I don't want to tap myself out before playing reimagined.
>>550064095
man xvi has gotta be the most overhated jrpg recently. it's like a good 9/10 most of the time and dips to 6.5-7/10 tier while DQXI was like a consistent 7.5-8/10 but I still really love a lot of XVI stuff.
you think DQXII is going to have a moment where they pull "THIS IS OUR QUEST TO HUNT THE DRAGONS"

XIII > XII
>>
>>550064405
im a huge storyfag and XIII was more entertaining than XII. XII had some neat scenes with Vaan talking to Ashe and telling her revenge isn't the option but then the plot just ups and disappears halfway through the game. the game was more fun playing like an offline mmo where it's just exploring the areas and watching your team hit everything to death. never really had a moment like seeing Oerba for the first time, or Sazh suicide, or Hope about to kill Snow.
>>
>>550064398
Jade's more about the legs.

eh.
i didn't like the pokemon mechanic nor how they streamlined it so much that it became pretty easy to just do com/rav/rav. xiii you had to debuff/buff or you die. the qol changes were nice though
>>
>>550064398
>the most overhated jrpg recently
It's barely a JRPG. It's a much better action game than XV (the worst action game ever made) but it's even less of a Final Fantasy.
>>550064405
I completely agree that XIII is a way worse game than XII in every way I care about, but somehow XII is way less than the sum of its parts while XIII is enjoyable slop.
The best XIII game is Lightning Returns, which could've been good if it had a budget higher than Toriyama's pocket change.

Like her brother, she does a little bit of everything, but none of it all that well. Sje has high AGI and LCK, feed her some AGI, WIS and HP seeds to let her get buffs off first. Hustle Dance has saved my bacon once or twice too.

FF1 and DQ3 were being developed around the same time so if anything you should compare them by release date to be more fair about the design choices the technology allowed and inspired.
ie FF1vsDQ3 FF2vsDQ4 FF3vsDQ5 and so on.

You can beat Brute Bat right away even on Draconian as long as you have Kabuff. 4 stacks with the best armor you've got is enough to ensure that you can tank his physical blows. Any errant spells or whatever can be handled by using magic resist gear.
The main reason to do Alefgard first (or at least everything before the Dragonlord Castle) is to pick up the Fire Sword and scum for the Gold Bracer both of which are best in slot gear for Midenhall for an extremely long time.

9 has classes but it also has skill trees that carry over between them. some say the system makes it hard to design your party but in my expirience everything runs smoothly when you know what you want to unlock and when. it may take several playthroughs to find your style so im sure the negative reviewers only tried it once.
>>
>>550133502
really cute and a really fun series
>>
Playing DQ3 on a challenge run and I already failed it. As soon as I got the boat, MC gets fucking WHOOSH'd by a seamonster and got fucked. I was looking to "edit" my challenge run so I still have some resemblance of fun challenge but not "lol bad luck so fuck you"
>Original Rules
-Anyone dies. Immediate drop off at Patty.
-Hero dies. Game over.
-Everyone must be on tactics except Hero
-No Sage or mage users. Hero is the only one that can use "magic".
>Modified rules a little
-Anyone dies. Immediate drop off at Patty unless you have a Yggdrasil Leaf (You must use it right away. If no leaf, they are perma dead) Only exception to this rule is during boss fights. (If anyone dies during a boss fight and no leaf in inventory, go back to the last save)
-Hero dies. Return back to last save immediately. You cannot rez hero even with a Yggdrasil Leaf.
-Everyone must be on tactics except Hero unless it's a boss battle.
-1 Sage allowed (perm). This must be your merchant you drop off at Townburg
Does this seem more reasonable? The only thing I hate with my original rules is that my party members keep using propeller blade or monster rush thing all the damn time or they'll spam soothering song even if it's better to use groom or at least attack and let hero just heal. I hate having all these abilities and my party not even doing shit with them (wish DQ3 had some sort of gambit system).
>>
>>550136061
I've seen you a lot and I have no idea how that B tier came to be. I haven't played VI but I know a lot of DQers find it meh so I'm genuinely surprised it's up there too. I'm can't say whether your wrong or right because I haven't played it. II and IV being that high is also kinda weird and I can say that because I have played it.
>>
>>550133092
>>550135106
I'll save it in my backlog thanks. I have seen it a couple of times but I'm really turned off by western indie games for obvious reasons.
I should give One Way Heroics another try again. that was fun.
>>
>>550063939
>The SFC games legitimately look more like rpgmaker games than the DS games do.
5 looks like an NES game with only barely more effort put into shading, and 6 had a lot of cut corners made to get the game out on time, not helped by the DQ trio being still too worn out from Chrono Trigger to bring their best efforts.
>>
>>550136061
9's class issue tends to be more that you really need to plan ahead for which role they'll do otherwise you're stuck levelling pointless classes. Also the mc is just an egg on bot which is pretty feelsbad. I don't understand why it gets such a bad rep here since the game feels really great to play. Just use a little imagination and you can easily enjoy making your own party
>>
>>550145154
i think the game clashes artistically a bit and really dont care for the skills and classes together. would rather just have one or the other. its also just not very fun to playthrough single player because of how much content is multiplayer focused
>>
>>550148970
The multiplayer content is infinitely grinding dungeons and fighting unfair superbosses. To me the main story is the best part due to being way better paced than like 90% of DQ titles, none of the towns outstaying their welcome, and the game not being all that long to play. I could easily pick up DQ9 for a quick playthrough which I just can't do with 8 or 11 or 5.
>>
>>550150467
>5
I get the others, but V isn't a long game at all. I've never properly tracked a playthrough of IX but I'd be surprised if V was much longer, and it's definitely better paced.
>>
>>550150467
i think 9 is really not fun on replays because everything feels like it takes forever. dont really understand thinking the pacing is good. i also hate the gal fairy and trains, forgot to mention that before, feels very not dq to me.
>>
Is there any must learn moves for Sage before going into them? What's the best class to use before transforming into them? Warrior?
>>
>>550145154
>I don't understand why it gets such a bad rep here since the game feels really great to play
Weird ass exp formula that punishes lower level characters by giving them less exp
Gathering alchemy materials sucks, especially when it comes to needing ones that you can't get from the daily spawn points
Sidequests range from alright to hot ass.
>>
>>550153641
Kinda surprised there's not much min-maxing autism on DQ3. It is an easy game but still.
>>
>>550153792
The game has already been solved, especially in the remakes. Everyone learns Wild Side, pick up a Persecutter/Cutting Edge bot and then build the rest of the team around supporting him/her.
If you want to do something a bit different (mostly for the main game) then you can consider a magic heavy team where you run something like Hero/Mage/Sage/Filler and use Spooky Aura + Duplic Hat shenanigans.
>>
>>550154342
*thumbs up*
what's some good answers to some of my questions?
>>
>>550154505
You can't really give a good answer unless you know the rest of the team. The generic piece of advice someone can give is, if you have a Mage/Priest in the same team, the Sage is a replacement for the Priest and not a Mage.
>>
>>550154723

>>550154723
>if you have a Mage/Priest in the same team, the Sage is a replacement for the Priest and not a Mage.
I had both and turned them both into Sages, why shouldn't Mage go into Sage?
>>
>>550157053
Mages already do most of the stuff you'd want out of your Sage inherently while also leveling faster.
Thus, if you only had one class change item, it would be better to change the Priest into the Sage.
>>
>>550158046
Ah. I actually did my Mage first cause I figured it would be more valuable to have the extra healer.

thats true if you go for tension focused combat but if thats the case you can rely on the galdiators pep power. most of the time i prefer taking advantage of the combo system manipulating the order with agility boosts. you can also beat the game with the good old sap and oomph just fine. i do agree that a big part of the game was meant for multiplayer. you could visit a friends world to change into a vocation you havent yet unlocked and get late game gear as early as stornway. even the online store broke the deifficulty when it was still around. i enjoy the freedom a lot but i can see why linear games are more popular since they demand less from the player.

Liked 3HD but I wasn't a fan of scouring every where for both minimedals and monsters. The game also felt like it dragged after a while.
1HD was fun up until the green dragon, then the entire midgame felt awful but it became fun again near the end.
2HD is pretty enjoyable so far but I don't want to get my hopes up yet (at Tower of the Moon).

I'm playing 3HD right now and I think it peaked right when it opens up at the start and you're free to go wherever before rescuing the bandits. It's "closed" off enough so it's not like the orbs where it's complete where the hecky do I go (yes i know you have the map objectives) but it's open enough to do stuff out of order. Going into DQ1 world too was also pretty good since it's pretty much the same thing where it's just fuck it go do whatever but it's not open enough where you can potentially get lost lost. Kinda nearing the end but I might inflate my time by doing some needless grinding to make my party stronger. Can't wait for 1HD-2HD next.

Speaking about DQ3-HD. I really like the general outline of the game but I'm a bit disappointed the end game strategy is just WILD SIDE + MONSTER PILE ON SPAM. I wish end game was a lot more flexible in how you want to break it. Does other DQ games have better build variety? The only other DQ games I've played are that characters are "fixed" so you can't really build on them or there's certain weapon types/classes that are significantly better then the alternative where you're just intentionally gimping yourself if you try one over the other.
>>
>>550237521
VI and VII are broken with certain skills and with enough grinding you can have all of your party members have access to every skill in the game, pretty sure the objective best team is to just run four Hero vocations with everything else mastered.
VII is especially broken since the Sword Dance hybrid skill is very easy to learn, and deals four attacks at full damage for 0 MP. It actually steamrolls everything for free.
>>
>>550237521
>Monster Pile On
There are stronger moves to use with Wild Side but Pile On is the one people default to since their teams are usually a random hodgepodge of stuff.

That's because there isn't much of a point. In DQIII HD-2D specifically, Wild Side + Monster Pile-On is the path of least resistance by being good enough to meet the turn thresholds to get all the rewards from Xenlon and Grand Dragon. There may be more specific strategies for lower turn counts, but there is functionally no recognition in-game for it to matter. The more limited documentation for optimized strategies is directly a result of that.
>>
Can I talk about Dragon Quest in here or naw?
>>
>>550280648
>The more limited documentation for optimized strategies is directly a result of that.
Wild Side + Pile On WAS the optimized strategy day 1 unless you farmed for cash to spam Call to Arms. What with melee damage getting fucked by damage formula bullshit and two of the three relevant magic shit being locked to Gadabout which no one used since they somehow made them more obnoxious.
Pile On in 2025 isnt nearly as strong as it was in 2024 even before get into "optimization".

I know the patch added variance to the number of hits, but 3 to 5 still averages out to 4 outside of bad RNG. How badly was damage itself affected? To my understanding, I thought the damage was still the same with all monsters recruited. Even if it is initially weaker before the Temple of Trials, I would imagine unlocking the Temple of Trials before Xenlon hits the 15-turn limit should still be easy enough to hit max power.

Wild Side + Pile On (FP) averages 630 x 2 = 1260
Wild Side + Kaboom + Duplic Hat (ST) = 256 x 4 x 1.3 = 1331
Wild Side + Cutting Edge + Egg On = 300% Damage x 4 = 1200%
Wild Side + Persecutter + Egg On = 600% Damage x 4 = 2400%

Kaboom/Cutting Edge/Persecutter can then be modified by buffs/debuffs and so forth, so even if Wild Side technically has a higher peak (900 vs 720), its just outclassed if the player puts in even a minimum amount of effort into a creating a beatstick.

Is 7 really considered the black sheep of the franchise or is this youtube video lying to me?
>>
>>550329756
Kind of. It's not the most unusual or (IMO) the worst in the main series, but it's long and linear and the characters aren't that interesting and all that stuff at once can really wear you down.
>>
>>550330490
I heard the 3DS version improved a lot of it, but I can't confirm how true that is. I do know it's very long, and really ambitious too, right? When would you recommend someone finally play 7?
>>
toot
>>
>>550330850
The 3DS version really isn't that different, it mainly just trims down the opening a bit and makes some changes to encounters and the job system that don't affect things much either way. I think it loses some of the PS1 version's charm, but it's fundamentally the same game.
VII is one of the last DQ games I'd recommend, but there's no harm in giving it a try. Just know after you've done a couple of islands that nearly the whole game is just that, over and over, with stories of variable quality.

I really wish they still just said the number of defence points you gain from buff/kabuff instead of just saying you it increases slightly or significantly.
No wonder why I've felt the need to grind so much in draconian when I'm left under the impression that kabuff caps at two uses when it actually caps at like four, and the same goes for sap too.
The fact that the icons for boosts don't show stacks sucks too, wish they were more transparent with how it works, you used to have messages for when stats could go any higher/lower and nowadays there's nothing.
Oh my god I just realized, did XI work like this too? I had to grind to like 65 to beat act 2.
>>
>>550415314
The infinite buff/debuff stacking with no indication that you've hit a cap is an HD-2D only thing, as far as I'm aware.
>>
I don't think I'm ready to play XI yet after erdrick. Is Builders, the musou or monsters a good game to get into next? I beat XI up to Act 2 but XI S addition of clock town is giving me the autism to play all mainline before playing XI now. I was thinking of getting into a side game or VIII. (but I don't even know PS2 vs 3DS)
>>
>>550416240
HD2D does tell you that you reach a cap because any further attempts would stop working.
For example 2 uses of Buff or 4 uses of Kabuff puts you at the cap.
>>
>>550417360
>Builders, the musou
Both of those are more reliant on knowing the main games than XI is (although the Builders games are based on 1&2, so you're set).
Really, there's no harm in playing whatever. Add Rocket Slime to your list too, it's cute and short.

>>550420035
I've never seen it either. I think anon's hallucinating. It obviously doesn't actually stack forever, but there's no message telling you when you've hit the limit.

Kabuff = +1
Buff = +2
Gold Bracer (the tombola reward) increases the stack count by +1
You cant go beyond +4.

That's why Gold Bracer + Kabuff can allow you to use Midenhall's Egg On SUS on Turn 1 where as regular Kabuff would fail because the game only counts it if he's at +2 on higher.

Now, while we're on the note of Gold Bracer + Kabuff, if you do something like have both Cannocks cast Kabuff on Turn 1 and attempt to do it again on Turn 2, the game will tell you that whoever has the Gold Bracer on can't raise their defense anymore from either attempt. I believe each individual stack has its own duration as well, because after a while you'll notice that your defenses are dropping even though your characters have multiple castings of buff/kabuff on.

DQ1 HD is so weird to me. You think "remaking" this game would be simple but I like this a lot less than 3HD even though DQ1 (snes) was a fun experience. It feels a lot more bloated, the open-endedness of the game is also a lot worse, the combat is annoying since you have to rely on Cop Out (heh) a lot more. You can't even really grind in areas you're not suppose to "be in" yet because RNG can just fuck your asshole with bad enemy spawns (3 separate enemies or fuck it one of them just desperate hits you and gg). Even if you do XP gain is kinda ass. Some of the added scenes just felt unnecessary and I think they "abused" the cutscenes when most of them should've been a simple just go up to NPC and talk to them. Feels like it really missed the mark.
>>
>>550464506
Just leaving with this, but it does feel like 3HD is like the only remake game I played where one can argue it's literally the definitive option to playing it. 1HD feels like the typical gaming remake that I'm kinda like pros and cons between playing the original and 1HD. I wonder how I'm going to feel about 2HD.
>>
>>550464609
DQII is better, if only because it lends itself better to cutscenes with a talking party. For the most part, I feel the story additions work in its favor once you reach their conclusions. They stick out a little at first, but that might just be because I was used to the original experience. My biggest gripe is the party starts to repeat themselves constantly about the power of teamwork which can drag on cutscenes unnecessarily.

I think what they should've done is fix the maping/level scaling a little so you can still explore the world to make it a bit more open, and move ALL of the princess raura scenes onto her own "route" (aka if you keep the princess with you) and visit areas for optional flashbacks.
>>
i'm kinda playing DQIX
>>
>>550464506
>>550464609
>>550465868
DQ1 HD is a game that's entirely about exploring the various zones to find the specific gear needed to counter the encounter and then build accordingly.
Cop Out can serve as an out for physically oriented enemies but its utterly useless for others. Hell, even Dodgy Dance + Evasion Gear can substitute for those battles as well, especially on hybrid enemies.
I also notice that enemies tend to be a bit more pattern oriented than usual, with enemies like Spiketail and Dragonlord epitomizing that type of battle. If you love to do solo runs in other games, you'll love this one.
DQ2/3 HD are more normal jrpg experiences, so its easier for many people to enjoy and appreciate.
>>
>>550473403
I just feel like DQ1 if you wanna go around the world fuck around wherever, go for it the world is your oyster. If you do the same in HD it's just "lol here's an enemy that one shots you go fuck yourself" and XP gain is so slow that you can't even outgrind yourself to be in areas you shouldn't be in. I do get what you're saying with the puzzle bosses but it does feel bad when it does feel like the "RNG" method is the intended method to beat the boss. (Cop Out / Dodgy Dance + Evasion). As I said I like being able to outgrind and go back to previous required areas to wreck their shit and you can't really do that here. Just a different approach I guess but it's weird when original lets you do this but remake is like "hell naw bro, our rules." The added bloat of the story cutscenes felt unnecessary too. A lot of these don't have to be voice acted dramatic moments. DQ3 HD had them on fitting parts which I really liked as in your mom hugging you or your dad's fight. DQ1 just feels like they throw these voiced cutscenes freaking everywhere.
>>
>>550473736
Midgame is the roughest part of HD. But you can sequence break a bit.
>>
>>550475170
It's just weird since 3 remake didn't change so you were railroaded but for some reason 1 is like this. I'm around the faerie forest boss and I'm a little annoyed at how it feels I'm still under leveled despite me doing things in a way different order then intended (went to craggly first, cleared that then moved to the east side of the map, got a few stuff from medal place but I still feel "underpowered" as fuck). I get the intended way to beat this boss is just cop out + dodgy dance or something but FUCK let me just unga bunga damn.

I'm surprised, I was looking forward to 2HD since I don't have much fond memories of 2 OG. OH MY FUCKING GOD STUPID CANNOCK WHY'D YOU GET SICK NOW WE GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE BRO.
But with it being pretty barebones, I'd assume it would just be better than OG since it's a lot more "story focused" than 1 is. 1 I was expecting not cutscene bazonga but 2 I'm more accepting of it.

The town stories and villain-related cutscenes in 2 HD are mostly pretty good, but the party are weak characters and they constantly stop and yap about nothing important. You get the generic power of teamwork stuff like 40 times. By contrast, even though I thought 1 HD had too many cutscenes I ended up liking them quite a bit, especially after picking up Gwaelin.
2 is a lot more fun to play, though. 4 characters with way more spells and abilities than you could conveniently get in 3, and it's drowning in new bosses.

I mean you played the game too have you not? I think it's safe to say that DQ1 HD does have it's tendency to have boss battles where "fuck it roll of the dice" to see if RNG beats your ass or not. Is there cheese strats like Cop Out and Dodgy Dance? Yeah. Can you still get absolutely fucked because RNG just said nah not today senpai. Yeah.
I don't know why people are so quick to dismiss criticism of difficulty with this. Hard mode doesn't have to be so RNG based.
>>
>>550481568
Maybe because im an actual fan of 2? Idk most of the praise ive seen is from people that never liked the games so as someone that does maybe im more critical on its changes and its character assassinations
>>
>>550483064
There are only two bosses that I felt were complete horseshit, Knight Aberrant and the Dragon Zombies near the end.
Some cases, I found it was easier to just ignore Cop Out and go all out on the offensive because killing the enemies outright was preferable over trying to stall out die.
For example, there was a group fight where I just did Wild Side > Divide > Demon Demeaner's SUS Quadraslash which just blew everything up at once.
>>
>>550483664
I know what you mean. I barely see any video reviews or reviews in general trying to compare OG DQ1 and DQ1 Remake other then "changes good". It feels like a lot of people are pretty shallow in analyzing old games vs remakes now.
>>
>>550483940
>It feels like a lot of people are pretty shallow in analyzing old games vs remakes now
has cutscene = more bettaaaa!!! is basically what it is now. I think most the additions take away the appeal of 1 which are its easy pick up and play and replay ability because of its openness but that the Gwaelin additions are very good and will be missed when going back to previous versions. Same thing with 2 it just doesnt feel as open since getting certain items is now connected to side quests with a shit ton of cutscenes. Its so strange that they had a good balance in 3 and it never felt intrusive to me unlike in 1&2
>>
>>550484775
If anything, I felt the cutscenes in 3 were more annoying, mainly those recapping Ortega's journey. It was better when we got the whole thing shown before the title screen and the game left you to follow his trail yourself.
>>
>>550484775
Nah, 2HD's cutscenes were better than them wanking Ortega for the 10th time.

I can't tell if I recommend watching DQ V movie at all. The twist is...whatever but I've seen offensively worse video game movies that people recommend watching because why not. cough cough AC. cough cough.
>>
>>550495946
The twist isn't even close to the worst thing about it. V is just a terrible game try to turn into a movie, and they didn't even make a decent attempt. The overture montage is the only good part.
>>
>>550496342
honestly the only punchline i really like in the movie was "this time I'm going to pick Nera!" "picks bianca"

Is the HD2D version of 3 recommended over the original?
>>
>>550506714
Bit contentious but I'd personally lean towards yes, especially if you don't mind the visual style. The addition of skills for every class makes combat way more engaging and the new boss battles are a lot of fun. The originals have much more interesting dungeon crawling though because of the heal on level up and limited inventory space, so it's a bit of a tradeoff.

>>
>>550510161
HD2D's way of handling ailments is ass too.
>Draconian reduces infliction rate
>Enemies in HD purge ailments faster and probably have accumulative resistances at that
>So you can spend 5+ turns trying to status an enemy only for it to wear off right away
>>
>>550511482
not that it makes much difference, played it on normal and enemies still did that anyway. Bosses with multiple turns were losing ailments the same turn they got them, straight up stopped even trying cause what's the point then
i really don't get when rpgs do this shit

I would expect the hard mode of an RPG to require grinding unless you get really lucky, especially for DQ which is a pretty standard system and not something abusable with clever planning like SMT/Persona.

Personally I prefer it this way for DQ too cause I've always felt that grinding was a core part of DQ.
>>
>get gold claw
>encounter rate increases
>in a way, get more exp than usual because playing on Draconian
>realize I may as well just be playing on Dragon with a different weapon instead
I'm a fool, a FOOL
>>
>>550533656
You dont really need to grind on Draconian. I remember people claiming that you had to be at 32 for Multiheal for Belial 1 but I did it at ~28 because Forbearance + magic resist gear was enough.
>>
Any DQX players in here? I'm curious if the combat ever becomes somewhat in-depth outside of endgame superbosses. I'm only to the end of 2.0 so not close to caught up, but so far the bosses and general combat encounters are considerably simpler than even a typical DQ game because there isn't even the added complexity of controlling multiple party members yourself.

Focus on putting their vision into the game, instead of cucking out and only having portions of what was planned in it, or make it clearer what happened instead of talking about shit in interviews post-release.
Should've made it clearer that the Hero went back to the day before his journey started and then re-lived the entire story up until Arboria instead of mentioning this in some interview.
Should've made it clearer that the characters retain their memory instead of saying this on this Square Enix post-release live stream, where they answered player questions.

>>
>>550585148
I might. Nothing wrong with blending genres, but save that shit for a spinoff. Unless it's another game with time travel, in which case I actively want them to show different levels of technology for once instead of past and future being identical.

Railroaded for sure, but Draconian Quests do absolutely make the games harder. An All Draconian run of DQXI S is still probably the most masochistic playthrough in the series. DQIII Draconian was a bit on the weaker end, but DQI+II Draconian runs were tough as nails. Removing HP/MP recovery on level up was finally implemented, too, so they are clearly listening to feedback.

If its a Cop Out bot fight then grinding that much is pointless. You just need enough HP/Def to not get three shot and then all you do after that is spam Cop Out like an idiot until you win. You should also have access to evasion up gear by this point, so equipping those over raw def gear would be a good idea.

-The book is a journal of someone who was trying to use cursed armor, and the only answer he could get was to overcome a curse to become immune to them. But he thought that impossible.
-The Curse Researcher says that Cannock overcame a nasty curse, and became immune.
It's not exactly outright telling you like Anon said, it requires the player to put two and two together, but it's very heavy handed.
The main problem is like Anon said: most people would go through Alefgard first as soon as they get the boat. By the time they've been through Beran, there wouldn't really be a reason to go back to Tantagel and talk to the Curse Researcher again to get the second half of the hint. Plus most people would've long forgotten about the book, too. I'm not sure Cannock's illness is even referred to as a curse. So there's that too, if I'm not mistaken.

You shouldn't be focusing entirely on Def value. Get some fire resist gear, and you'll be surprised at how easy the Green Dragon becomes. And yes, I am talking about Draconian difficulty. The claws are helpful in their own way, but not as valuable as fire resistance.
>>
>>550907830
his breathe attacks and fucking me over. it's the physical attacks + running out of mana that screws me
>>
>>550907452
Wear breath resistant armor so that his breath attacks only deal like 7 damage, then use the faerie foil to keep your physical defence buffed so you can survive his physical attacks as you slowly chip him down. Use reheal as well since its MP efficient and you actively gain a little HP during the turns he breathes fire.
>>
>>550908091
Use focus pocus to get MP back.
Bosses like to heat up like in Dark Souls at low HP so take the beginning of the fight slow and steady, use faerie foil and reheal to keep your HP stable (use a stronger heal if you get critted) and keep focus pocus up so you stay at near full MP. Yes its slow and you don't get to attack often, but it betters your odds when shit hits the fan at half HP, since you'll be near full on MP.

>>
>>550907452
>>550918383
>>550917596
You're not really expected to win on your first try (and this goes for a lot of bosses). Fight the boss, get a feel of their pattern and then modify your strategy accordingly.
For the green dragon in particular, the best setup is stacking as much fire resistance as possible (use the Tectonic Plate you get in the Dwarf place for complete breath immunity) and if you farmed for it, the dragon claws, so you dont need to spend MP on a decent damage move. Cop Out or Defend on the turns where he uses physical moves, heal up or attack when you expect him to use a breath attack. Dont be afraid to use items like the Oomph Powder or Magic Water either.

By the way Reheal is the requirement to use the defensive souped up skills and the buff based ones like Wild Side > Divide. You probably dont have Demon Demeaner from Damdara at this point but if you do, consider stacking as much MP Reduction as possible and on a safe turn do something like Wild Side > Divide > Quadraslash, even a single one of those does massive amounts of damage for a very long time.
>>
>>550905696
The success rate is ass and there's nothing to buff it. Have fun spending hours trying to steal the War Drum from Rockbombs.

It's not that important where you start. If you care about the experience of seeing the series and genre evolve then definitely play the originals first (or much more faithful earlier remakes). The HD-2D versions are good, but I+II especially are so different from the originals that you're not getting the same experience.
If you just want to play a good game and you don't care about any of that then I'd recommend XI or something to start, maybe emulate IV or VIII or the SNES version of III. No need to rush in and pay for the newest priciest thing.
>>
By the way, if you havent done so already, go get the Sunstone before beating the Green Dragon. 1HD is infinitely more fun with the Princess around.

i guess but that felt obnoxiously RNG rather than "yeah I got a good strat!" I hope DQ2 doesn't feel this way because DQ3 felt perfect where yeah I can strategize or I can grind to beat the boss. DQ1 feels like "yo did you spam the rng moves? did you get good rng? no? okay EAT SHIT" actually green dragon was pretty easy but slow as fuck since I just attacked instead of using dragon slash + wild side.... so I had mana to just re-heal/heal
>>
>>550961371
DQ2 felt even better than 3 to me in that regard because the skills that were spread across 8 vocations are condensed into 4 characters so you have a shit ton of options around the mid point.
>>
>>550961371
Yeah, it's a specific problem to DQ1. DQ2 on Draconian is still tougher than DQ3 but it never gets silly.
>>
>>550961371
1HD is very precisely fine tuned, but its likely that they tuned it for Dragon and not Draconian as most hard modes in this genre are an afterthought (lmao less exp and money earned with stronger enemies). So while Cop Out is a perfectly viable strategy, it doesnt feel "skillful" which is why you hate it so much.
I'd just dump every seed I can get into Solo if you havent done so already.
>>
>>550978980
>I'd just dump every seed I can get into Solo if you havent done so already.
Why would you ever not do that?
>>
>>550970913
Action economy kills experimentation in 1HD especially when buff/debuff duration are inconsistent because its DQ. The midgame is especially bad for this.
>>
>>550979128
I beat DQ1 HD on Draconian while barely using seeds because I forgot about them. Golem/Dragon Zombies/Aberrant were horrible bosses as a result.
>>
>>550979128
NTA but I never use stat boosters until the final boss in any RPG I play, unless it has limited invetory.
This is because I don't want to gove one to the wrong person, and I won't be really sure until I'm at the end, but this has become such a habit that even in DQ1HD I did the same thing despite only having one guy, because that's just how I do it now.

I just got the soul sigil, and I think 37 was a good level for that, Cannock's kazap helped a good bit to try and clear the enemies quickly so Midenhall could deal a mustered multifist straight to her face. Moonbrooke didn't really get to do anything other than heal and buff.
>>
>>551009152
I beat her at like 33 on Draconian. The fight is just spam your best full screen move at all times to to clear the adds and then your best DPS can whittle her down. If anything, Moonbrooke at 37 should shine in that fight since you can spam Wild Side + her strongest aoe spells.
>>
>>551011467
Spamming spells is really bad in the fight though cause Mariella always casts bounce on herself, I only used Kazap a couple times in the rare instance where she was open. Moonbrooke is also just very stuck as a support since she's the only person with Multiheal, Oomph, and Magic Barrier, she usually just does not have the luxury to be able to attack in boss fights.

>>
>>551026939
cop out is strong, but it isn't the end all be all.
>>
>>551014625
>Mariella always casts Bounce
You're probably taking too long to clear the adds. The knights will always use Forbearance, so a well placed Kazap/Kaboom/Kacrackle will severely injure if not outright one shot them. Or at lower levels, then Cannock can contribute with Multislice.
This causes her AI to blow more turns resummoning instead of doing whatever.
>Moonbrooke doesnt have time to attack in bosses
Its easy to get a billion copies of Oomph Powder from Tombola (plus you want to get 3 copies of the half MP item from Dirkandor anyway) and you're at the point where you most likely have the sigil that turns it into AoE on use.
Magic Barrier is a fire once and forget for a few turns.
You shouldnt need to be using Multiheal that often if you're on the ball with buffs/resistance gear. Not to mention that Cannock's the one with Omniheal for panic healing.
>>
>>551026939
Only like three bosses post faerie village get any real mileage out of cop out, one of them being optional and the other two being a LONG while off.
I hope you arent trying to Cop Out the clouds instead of using Skysplitter or something.
>>
>>551028475
If we're talking the second fight, I just used Magic Burst out the gate with Soul Asylum to block her counter MB. She spent the rest of the fight mostly just trying to regain MP.
>>
>>551033321
He mentioned that he just got the Soul Sigil so its the 1st one.
Everything post sigil is can be solved with the usual Gritty Ditty + Oomph + Muster Strength/Egg On Combo all you do is just change whoever you want to be your primary DPS.
>>
>>551028475
>You're probably taking too long to clear the adds.
It took me a while to clear the adds each time, they have so much HP, and Mariella would cast bounce on the turn immediately after summoning them. I think the fight took me like 25-30 minutes overall.
As for MP reduction I only have the mad cap right now, and the sigil that buffs items is the last one I'm missing.
>You shouldnt need to be using Multiheal that often if you're on the ball with buffs/resistance gear.
I needed to use it fairly often, I got wiped once by thinking I could just wait out one more turn before healing since the buffs were keeping damage low, then Midenhall died to a crit and everything quickly fell apart.
>Not to mention that Cannock's the one with Omniheal for panic healing.

Really? 3 is pretty well researched for all the versions and it didnt take too much digging to get decent advice for 3HD on Gamefaqs/Reddit.
8 has a pinned build guide
And most of the strategies for 1HD work on every mode. You just end up playing more defensively or relying on fixed damage sources in Draconian due to being permanently underlevel.
Etc
>>
>>551092450
Idk, most information I can find on 3 is "have u tried wild side + monster pile on???" 1HD is just more of "idk have you tried faerie foil + wild side + sigil moves???" >what mods
there's a few overhaul mods (different jobs, different enemies, in one case even a overhaul to the gambit system) but i'd only recommend them for eventual replays (cause imo they don't make the game "better", they're just neat changes), what the game really needs is the tons of qol mods that either make stuff easier (borderline on cheating sometimes, ymmv) or straight up make it make sense (aka the loot system, one of the things that was clearly made with the goal of selling guides)
pic related is my mod list with relative load order (the manager is MO2), the unchecked ones are the overhauls mods which are to be used one at the time (and preferably with a fresh save), everything else can instead be used at the same time. All of these but Ivalice UI can be found on nexus mods (ivalice ui is on steam forums, you can find it by just googling it)
also some of these are like frameworks, they do nothing on their own but you need to edit their config files (or use one of the overhaul mods that do that for you). I personally made some edits to some of them, like for example i changed the chain benefits one to give either players or foes random buffs or ailments every time loot is picked up

>>
>>551213275
I've never had a problem with it, at least not with any DQ games. 3DS emulation is another story.

i just don't like "two screens" on a single monitor type shit. it's so awkward. I could play it on original hardware but ngl i am a sucker for speed up....
>>
>>551214120
I usually play games like that in a window rather than fullscreen when I emulate on PC so it never felt that weird to me. It sucks trying to emulate DS on a chinkheld though, since I hate side by side display in most cases.

In my memory DQ9 was moderately successful for a DQ game in the west when it came out. The hardcore western JRPG fans were disappointed because it wasn’t on the scale of 8 but it sold decently and was heavily marketed to kids since it was on the DS. As a result it has a decent amount of zoomer nostalgia on the internet now. I skipped it when it came out and then never came around to it for years because I thought it didn’t have much of a main story. Turns out it does and it’s pretty charming but it suffers from Gen 7 portable JRPG syndrome. Expects you to be playing it on a Tokyo subway daily and grinding out little side quests and farming materials and playing multiplayer with many easily accessible people. IMO it’s kind of poorly balanced and doesn’t tickle my build autism. Just gives you the opportunity to make super powerful characters by leveling lots of different things and farming materials.
>>
9 is built around multiplayer and map trading. If you had friends (or were Japanese) then it was a wonderful experience. As a solo experience, its pretty mid.
>>
>>551193529
I feel like there are a lot of people here that dont like IX
>>
A game needing other players to be good means its bad. Yes that means multiplayer only games are awful.
>>
>>551193529
If you take IX as a singleplayer game it's like a bite-sized VII with create-a-characters and a better job system. The town stories are good but otherwise it's nothing special.
>>
>>551229359
>a better job system
I have a hard time believing that.
>>
>>551231197
its the worst implementation of the system in the series
>>
>>551231197
I don't think the bar's that high, and there are a lot of things about the system in IX that are fucked up, but in theory I think it's cool. The cross-class synergy stuff is neat. It's wasted on a short singleplayer game though.
>>
>>551232524
>cross class synergy
Maybe if the SP distribution wasnt so ass. For example, Paladins love Fans and Mages love Hammers but tough luck passing those on without intense grinding.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?
>>
>>551234407
They expected you to raise people in multiple vocations including ones that you didnt intend on using at all for their build. Which is annoying when you need like 400+ SP at minimum.
>>
The DQ9 job system was better in Heroes 2 than DQ9
>>
>>551234407
They werent thinking, its dog shit.

>>
>>551234407
>>551239413
Why they didnt just sum up all the sp you should get between 1-99 and divide it evenly per level is something that I'll never understand.
>>
I love job systems but pretty much every DQ one has been either trash or OK (haven’t played X to be fair). Not impossible that 7 Reimagined ends up with the best job system in the series just by virtue of having dual classing and unique skill sets.
>>
3 has the only good job system because it was simple and worked
>>
A VI-style system could be really good and I hope they try it again sometime. I wanted XII to be like an expansion pack sequel to XI but with a fun job system and monster recruiting and more freedom to explore.
>>
>>551253040
Most of the vocations in 3 are irrelevant in the long term but fine be my guest.

Basically. Job system in 3 is good, 6 is OK, 7 is OK, 9 is bad, 6 DS is bad but mostly due to other changes, 7 3DS is bad. Haven’t played X.
>>
I dont think any of the job systems in DQ are good.
>>
>>551320208
They others just over complicate things and feel like they are punishing you for not only switching classes but also sticking to one lol
>>
>>551322415
9's system actively encourages swapping since its the most effective way to get a ton of points due to the shitty distribution. The problem is that 9'a exp curve is ass since only Metal Slimes and bosses give non shit exp past a certain point. Combine that with an exp formula that deprives underlevel characters, it ends up spoiling an otherwise solid implementation from a conceptual standpoint.
DQ6 is just dont grind in any area too long and you'll naturally max out two advanced pairs by the end. I cant really think of anything egregiously bad about it.
>>
>>551322415
The systems in 6 and 7 don't have any long-term effects on the characters either way though, do they? I thought the jobs were just % modifiers on stats rather than affecting growth.
>>
>>551327463
The vocation directly before your final one is the most relevant in 3 for stats.
6/7 are just stat mods
9 does a mix of 3 and 8 for progression. The vocation determines your bases but you can invest into trees that carry over to whatever it is you want to use.

Holy shit the Lunagriff was a monster and a half. Even through magic barrier and 3-4x kabuff I had to spam multiheal and hustle dance just to barely stay afloat and even then I still needed luck on who he'd attack with propeller blade.
Didn't help that he outspeeds the whole party on most rounds.
I survived by the skin of my teeth, Midenhall was totally empty on MP and everyone else only had a few rounds worth of MP left in them as well.
