Overzone was one of the best showcases of nikke’s world and the effects it has the nikkes. The early main story and other extra shit was good at showing how brutal the Ark could be to nikkes but Overzone’s strength is showing her brutal the war is to nikkes. The core idea of Overzone (and any nikke story when its good, and really nikke as a whole) is the relationships that help and save nikkes from the trials they face. The story opens on Goddess Squad facing the trials of the surface and fighting in a fractured state where each member has recoiled into the darkness of their own heart. But Pinne is able to reach out to Dorothy and inspire her. And in turn, Dorothy reaches out to her squad, reminding them of the heroes they’re meant to be. Through this, the Goddess Squad is saved and returned to glory. But, as you know, Pinne meets the cruel fate of corruption, and Dorothy has to return the favor and “save” her once savior by fucking killing her. Instead of this dragging Dorothy back into an even deeper darkness, they corrupt the idea of bonds saving nikkes by having Dorothy’s sanity be saved, but this time having the bond come in the form of a hollow, unhealthy savior. This is resolved somewhat by having Snow White help Dorothy get it together again... but since having someone to be her best self for is so core to Dorothy, and since the Ark destroyed the possibility of her having anyone by causing Pinne to die and rejecting Dorothy, Dorothy has a scar etched upon her heart that prevents her from fully recovering.1/2
