This is literally how it's described in the game. But if you look at it from the player perspective, it's like a single really bad day in Radz that vanishes as soon as it starts. It's also barely referenced in later patches despite being basically the end of the world. Nobody in mandatory post-ew questlines is grappling with the ptsd of it. Maybe in a side quest, but most people avoid those because they're never voiced and give 0 rewards. So it's easy to gloss over and forget.

That doesn't happen in XIV anymore. When was the last time the Scions had an argument? Like a genuine argument of ideas that got heated and resulted in someone losing their temper and walking away or something? I can't even recall it ever happening. This is a group of educated scholars who've fought and been through gritty, dark shit, but they never bicker or argue or disagree on anything. Like, when Y'shtola was talking about experimenting with fucking portals, it would've been cool if someone like Urianger or even Krile had said "hey maybe don't do that shit" and then Y'shtola had gotten into a heated argument with them or something. Anything. Some kind of tension. For fuck's sake. My favorite book atm is Uprooted, because the entire thing explores the tension between two people.

It's hard to create a lot of interpersonal dialogue that really delves into the personalities of characters when it's just a general guideline for a character when writing that you're supposed to follow. Which I'm sure is how most games operate. That's why a lot of video game stories are kinda subpar. XIV is by no means the greatest story every written but it has some good points but also some VERY VERY bad points because of it. It's why a lot of characters come off as very one note because it kinda just sticks to whatever guideline they're supposed to be. He either lacks the extensive character knowledge, or the writing chops.

The more steps you add to your medium, the more noise makes it in and risks ruining it, sometimes even overtaking your intention and being remembered for something else. That isn't to say noise is always bad, and the writer intention is always good, but there's a reason some parts of stories stick with people and some get glanced over.XIV has this issue constantly because, much like the sonic franchise for example, they have not one but multiple main audiences competing on their idealized version of the game. And this even spreads between very set "factions" like the msqandy and the raiders having different preferences and expectations from each other.I think the main issue is that the game has become so predictable since SHB that it really feels stale. They introduce a character on act 1, establish them, and then it becomes obvious the entire role of that character was to die as a hook. They've played this out too many times, every other deaths we see are just painted as casualties of a bad situation we are ACTIVELY working to fix. So for the player it's always about looking for the next problem to solve, and not really on worrying about the consequences, you'd be forgiven for remembering your enemies more than the very conflict they caused to have you take them down in the first place.
