Metal Robotnik was evil, but wasn't a threat to anyone Sonic was concerned with.I could write a document on all the different spinoff takes on Sonic and how far they are from the games. Frankly, Archie would be on the bottom and it would probably be used as slander on Archie which would do nothing but fuel thread shitstorms. It'd take a lot of tact to pull that off properly. There are some merits to the Archie take that are worth noting when you consider SEGA used to refuse to send important character and story context early on (At least according to Penders) which can account for a lot of the strange character and lore differences between Archie Sonic and most japanese incarnations.

So why the fuck did the games from SA1 to Riders feel the need to play up Sonic's disinterest in romance as a specific disinterest in Amy in the englsh version? The english dub of SA1 is almost totally accurate aside from giving Sonic weird "Teenage 90s dudebro" bits. That's fine, they rarely change the actual meaning of a scene. But his interaction with Amy is completely changed. In the english version he loudly proclaims "YOU MUST BE KIDDING!" and then helps along. This implies that Sonic didn't want to help and then did it anyways. That's cute but in the Japanese version he's just surprised by the question and immediately aggrees.
