I have a theory that Nocturne is actually the least liked mainline title, every Nocturne fan I've seen doesn't really seem to care about anything from the game itself, and focus all their attention into the Amala content, I guess the sole exception is the Press Turn combat, but since all the games that came later put their own spin in the system, you also don't see anyone say that nocturne has their favorite combat either. Not trying to start an argument that Nocturne is "so underated" or anything like that, I just thought it was ironic since a decade-or-so ago it appeared to be the most beloved mainline.

Both routes are very similar but have different demons, a different map, etc. The new route has somewhat more content though and more story. That said it's possible you could play one route and feel burnt out of playing the other one. So I would start with taking her hand and playing the new route. The only reason you would play the old route first is for the story because there are some things that aren't explained to you at all in the new route but it's nothing major enough that you won't be able to follow along.
