It rarely devolves into a big blob and its spread out over a large portion of the map.

If you really get into it you can go as far as sending a character out as a spy to be recruited by an enemy faction, hired as one of their generals, then at the pivotal moment you activate them like some Manchurian Candidate and have them split off from the enemy army with some units and change sides to fight with you in the big battle
